iPhone 5 Launch

I don't know why people are calling it the 5 when historically, it'll be a refresh/update of the 4 with a few new features ala 3G/3GS.

Umm... because it's the 5th iPhone version and an official name won't be given by Apple until the launch?

The iPhone 4S and keeping the same form factor as the iP4 is just one of many rumours doing the rounds.

I'm still thinking it's a new style. If it's not then I can't see me upgrading, like I didn't from the 3G to the 3GS; not whilst the iPhone 4 will run the latest iOS5 version of firmware.

The rumour is that there is two iphones, the 4s and the 5.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/sep/27/apple-iphone-5-launch-4-october?newsfeed=true

Apple's next-generation iPhone will be on public sale "within weeks" of its official announcement on 4 October, according to US technology site AllThingsD. UK availability and prices have not been announced.

Hope it doesn't take to long to get released in the uk

Samsung don't know what technology is in the new device and won't until after 4th Oct and then they get their hands on one when it goes on sell. They can't even TRY do anything until it's already been released!!! LOL

Luckily for you its likely that they may only try for the ban in south korea initially so you will be free to pay a small fortune for a new iphone that is a bit slimmer and a bit faster than the current one. But hopefully they will have fixed their reception problems this time so that's probably another major selling point :) Also with luck they will have fixed their reliability issues so they don't have to constantly replace phones :)

Apparently you say where is Joe bloggs at the phone and it find it for you. The assistant feature really does sound great.

One assumes that like facetime the other person has to have a suitable apple product as well. As to knowing where someone is it sounds just like google latitude.

Also having voice control on a phone sounds fine. The google voice search works well on android. However you do feel as bit of a fool standing there talking into the phone saying things like "Find Joe Bloggs" and I use it a lot less than I thought I would.

What a load of crap that was.

Hopefully now the whole hype around Apple will die as it isn't deserved. I had an Iphone and replaced it with a desire. The desire kills it in nearly every way and was just a fraction of the price.

Apple is just the "cool" brand for kids, in the same way all the 12 year olds have to have Hollister.

There is only so many times you can release the same thing and say it is something different. Their stocks are taking a hammering and rightly so.

What a load of cack for all the hype

It's actually not, if you look at the facts, features and ignore the gimme gimme gimme attitudes of everyone who wanted a new shiny iThing.

1. Form: The iPhone 4 is a beautiful looking thing; It's better looking than any other smartphone.

2. Speed. The 4S has a dual core processor and dual core graphics, making it up to 7 times faster than the already quick iPhone 4.

3. Speed. Download speeds of up to 14.4MB/s thanks to the new dual antennae.

4. Camera. 8mp camera, better lens for wider shots, better image processing, the lens also takes in 73% more light. And it's quick.

5. Siri. Voice activated AI.

6. Battery life improved.

7. iOS5. iCloud, Wi-Fi sync, iCards, iMessage, and everything else - keeps iOS way ahead of any other mobile operating system.

8. iPhone 5. There's clearly an iPhone 5 in development. I'm disappointed that it's not been released now, but there's enough in the 4S and iOS5 to keep people going and time to improve the iPhone 5 even further.

Overall: disappointed I won't get my hands on a shiny new iP5, but the 4S looks good and I'm happy with the knowledge that when it is released (March'12?) it'll be worth the wait.

Considering his post was specifically about the iPhone 4s

1. Not a new feature or specific to iPhone 4s

2/3/4 Fair enough,

5. No one will use it.

6. Improved from 7 hours talk time to 8 :/

7. Not a new feature or specific to iPhone 4s

8 Not a new feature or specific to iPhone 4s

So only 3 of your points are anything worth getting even moderately excited over.

"the iPhone 4S will come with the Apple A5 chip found in the Apple iPad 2. It's a dual-core processor with a 1GHz clock-speed, bringing Apple into line with competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy SII "

So, once again, Apple fans think they are getting ahead of the game when in fact they are only "keeping up". Very disappointed

I think people have underestimated iOS5.

Even just installing iOS5 on your old iPhone 4 or 3GS will make it seem like a new and improved device.

I'm undecided whether I'll upgrade to the 4S or just miss it out like I did the 3GS. I'll probably miss it out and wait for iP5. However, anyone looking to upgrade a 3G/3GS/any other smartphone could do no better than the overall package of the 4S, iOS5, iCloud etc.

Yes but I was looking for something that would make me want to upgrade my IP4. Things like speed and camera whilst useful, are not something that makes me go wow or get me excited and that's something Apple is meant to do. Very disappointed TBH after 15 months to just get a small upgrade.

I thought from history that installing a new version of iOS on a older device made it slower and sluggish?

If you are the sort of person who will pay £100 pounds for £10's worth of memory chips because they refuse to include a memory card slot and believe iTunes is wonderful and not an awful program then it may be the phone for you.

Also it may be the fastest now but unlike iPhones new android phones are being released almost daily and I predict its crown on various area's will be lost very soon.

Finally as I noticed someone had pointed out on another site though they used fairly new phones for the camera speed comparisons they used older phones for the network speed comparison, I wonder why that was?!

Looks like Samsung are following through on their threat:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/10/05/samsung_wants_injunctions_in_france_and_italy/

The Korean electronics giant is citing two patent infringements related to the WCDMA standard for 3G mobile handsets in its new cases.

Samsung, which is locked in a fight-to-the-injunction struggle with Apple in numerous countries worldwide, said the fruity firm's violation of its intellectual property was "too severe" and "iPhone 4S should be barred from sales".

"Apple has continued to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free ride on our technology. We believe it is now necessary to take legal action to protect our innovation," the Samsung Tomorrow blog read.

The Galaxy maker added that it was planning to file preliminary injunctions in other countries "after further review".

Can it be used as a telephone?

Thanks

Yes the new phone has fixed the antenna problem but I have never been impressed by the quality of call on the older phones but I expect the fashion victims will start queiing for it as usual lol

7x faster graphics? Only in games if they are optimised for the new phone. They use the 7x as the headline but actually in day to day non gaming use of the phone the max increase is 2x.

14.4Mbps downloads will never happen - thats the max it can handle but you might get that speed once in a blue moon if ever.

What ****es me off about Apple is that they change a part in one of their devices and they call it something new. Change of processor = conference and launch something new.

You rarely see Sony or Microsoft don't do that as much. You don't see them changing a part in say the 360 or PS3 and then call it a PS3G or a 360X! And then charge you what it cost when the origional came out....

Normally when a company replaces a part they do so because it makes the item cheaper to make. Somehow when Apple does it the items price goes up....

I don't want to sound like an Apple basher but i simply don't get how someone thinks they are worth the money. Samsung will announce their new Nexus Prime next tuesday. I gurantee you that will be miles better while also being a lot cheaper.

A lot of the apple fashion victims are starting to catch on now. Not all, but some.

I have owned iphone and android phones. Apple can only upgrade their phones. Android phones in contrast, change and improve frequently due to the volume of suppliers.

I honestly cannot see what Apple offers over Android. Can somebody who has owned both tell me what I have overlooked apart from a slinky case.

It's all about the opperating system. My other half cannot stand the version of Android running on her HTC Wildfire but absolutely purrs over the ease of use of her iPod Touch 4.

And there are others who have tried both and prefer android. Its a matter of personal taste plus people who may have a slight preference for iOS need to take into account the significant price differential, plus other advantages such as adding extra memory at 10 pound for 16GB rather than having to pay 100 pounds extra up front for the extra 16gb in an iPhone.

I used to have an Iphone. At the time i thought it was great. Was my first smartphone. At the pub however i got to have a look at the htc desire. After messing around with that i thought it was great, was faster, had better touch screen, better camera, but most of all was the apps. There were so many things on there that were not on the Apple Store. It annoyed me that i paid so much cash but also had a limited capability to what i could do. Not to mention i couldn't even watch flash things in the browser. My gf also had an iphone and moved to the Galaxy. Both our contracts are up soon and will deffinatly be staying with android.

Pretty sure most people who go from Apple to Android prefer Android.

Disappointing really, was expecting a little more.

I like the dual core CPU. And the screen is still lush.

But I'll stick with my 12MP camera (with xenon flash) and dual antenna of my Nokia N8 for now.

You're gonna LOVE whats coming.

Oooo don't tease! You talking about Symbian Belle? That looks awesome.

Symbian Belle is excellent. If it had come out a year ago Nokia would be a far different company now. Been playing with it on an E7 for a few weeks - runs faster than Symbian3 and Symbian Anna: 70% less code.

I was refering to something else though. Not long now........
