Destination advice

Skiathos - went last summer and it is the best Greek Island IMHO and I've done a few. You will need a jeep for the best beaches but the tavernas are excellent and all reasonably priced - Skiathos Town is great - small enough to get round on foot with great restaurants sites etc. Otherwise I would have suggested Venice - its a real gusset moistener!

With my good lady having her 40th b'day this year I'm looking for some destination advice for 3 maybe 4 nights

in Sept with the criteria being:

near a beach

warm

interesting

Some ideas being bounded around: Malta, Malaga, Greek islands

any ideas my well travelled friends

Vale do Lobo on the Algarve. Classy, 2.25 hr flight and only 20 mins from Faro airport

Monte Carlo... I went last year for 4 nights. Was amazing. Getting and staying there isnt too pricey (i flew EasyJet to Nice and stayed in the hotel that overlooks the famous hare-pin for £350 each). Restaurants and drinks are of course way more than you're ever likely to pay anywhere else in the world! But for a one off special occasion its okay. Plenty of interesting things to see and do and a nice little beach.

Languedoc in south west France. Basically, French Catalunya. Stay somewhere near the Spanish border.

Amazing weather, lovely restaurants (French and Spanish), beautiful towns and cities (perpignan, barca and loads more) , the pyrynees, and cracking beaches both sides of the border.

Flights from Southampton to beziers are 1h 30m and cheap as chips.

I'd second this. You wouldn't have time to do this but we spent a week on the Canal du Midi - maybe they do day trips?

Edited by bridge too far
Got my French regions muddled up

I'll add my name to the list of Languedoc promoters; I took my missus there last October and we're going again this year, but more towards Perpignan. Even in October the water's warm enough to swim in the Med, if that's your thing. , or ride bikes, canoe rivers, walk, hike.... great place.

However, Venice is a real MUST GO ONCE sort of place - if you've never been (by which I mean neither of you) then take her for her 40th; you won't regret it. Yes its expensive but its unique too. You can visit Milan at the same time if you hire a car and have the time; depends how many days you can go for.

Final suggestion - Guernsey or Jersey. Cheaper, but charming and probably reasonable weather in September; often lots of good offers, too. You can fly or go by car from Weymouth, Poole or the other place beginning with P. However be careful about taking your own car - roads are REALLY narrow with walls each side and lots of opportunity for coming back with a scrape. Better to hire something small.

Have banked Languedoc and Calpe for future trips as both look well worthy of a visit but the birthday girl has chosen Malta (she was conceived there apparently so I have a long weekend trying to shake the thought of the mother and father in law doing the biz)

Looks good, loads to see, plenty of history, good beaches, any suggestions, Sliema looks nice

Worth a trip to Mdina then - the Silent City. And the blue grotto http://www.bluegrottomalta.com.mt/ There are quite a few roman ruins and caves. A boat trip to Gozo is good too

That's the problem y'see Jillyanne. I said Venice is a MUST GO ONCE sort of place. You say you've been there loads of times. Spoiled the effect.

I won't spoil the effect by saying how many times I've been - suffice to say I thought it was a great crack but I'm not necessarily in a rush to go back a second ti.........urrgghh it got out!!

Agree with this. Skiathos is beautiful and has some of the best beaches you'll find - there are 67 to choose from, but Lalaria, Koukounaries and Achladies Beaches are probably the best. Although I'd recommend a quad bike over a jeep every time.

Malta only has three main beaches but ticks the boxes of interesting and warm. Some superb Medieval and WW2 related history (check out Mdina and Valetta) it is warm pretty much throughout the year, only December to March is really temperate.

For beaches, book a Hotel near Melieha bay. Alternatively, Paceville has the quite nice St Georges Bay beach right next to it's Hotels/Restaurants/Bars with easy bus access to all places of interest. Qawra/Buggiba tend to be cheaper with a major Bus terminal on it's doorstep.... I tend to go there twice/three times a year.

Barca ticks all of them.

If you've not already done Barcelona then this is a no-brainer, as VFTT says, ticks all the boxes.

Short flight from Southampton, ideal for a few days break. Stay around the Gothic area, walking distance to a cracking beach, marina, great stroll throught the narrow streets, Ramblers nearby (but far enough away). Easy to get around, Metro stops everywhere, Nou Camp easy to get to (if she'll let you), Montjuic and the Olympic stadium with fantastic views over the city (go on the cable cars). And I'm not at all religious but the Sagrada Familia is a breathtaking building.

Israel. Tel-Aviv, Herzlyia, Netanya, all got great beaches, still warm there in September and you will never lack interesting places if you can tear yourself away from the beaches.

Eilat, down on the Red Sea, will still be boiling in September. You're a bit distant from the main tourist action (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth) if you want a day away from the beaches, but you can do a day trip to Petra in Jordan from Eilat.

Trouble is, you might need more than three or four days.

Booked 3 nights in Sitges, half hour down the coast from Barcelona. I had trouble getting decent flight times elsewhere due getting the kids off loaded but flying from Southampton means we can max out the time we have rather than spending too much travelling time.

It looks alright, decent beaches and restaurants plus a day in Barcelona

Don't come here in September.

It will still be hot as hell, and the only event worth seeing is Tom Jones in concert in Abu Dhabi.

Just a tip for anyone who does go to Israel, if you do ever want to then fly long haul or come down this part of the world you will need to get a new passport to avoid at least delays or worse refusal at Immigration in this part of the world. At Immigration in Israel you were able to can ask them to stamp a piece of paper and stick it in the passport apparently, no idea if that still applies.

She's already been :p we did Barcelona about 6 years ago and she really enjoyed it. Great city and look forward to doing some of the things we missed plus another trip to the sagrada familia to see if they've got any closer to finishing the mad crazy and beautiful building
