The ones that got away....

Alexander Büttner - quicker and better than fox, could have given Lallana some competition, in reality shines the boots and gets a few cup/meaningless games at United because of agent fees.

He looks an absolutely class act, it is a shame we missed out on him but he'd have kept Shaw out of the team so hey.

Craig Mackail Smith.

Lethal in League One. But probably found his level in Championship.

Regret factor: 2/10

Wilfred Zaha

The next big thing, pacey winger with tremendous ball control and the ability to actually score.

Regret factor: 8/10

Craig Gordon

Quality keeper. £9m signing for Sunderland? Not sure if he's even alive anymore.

Regret factor: 3/10

James Beattie

He's done it before and can do it again. Would be wrong not to have him as a key part of our push in the NPC. Last seen at Accrington Stanley?

Regret factor: 0/10

Name: Brian Howard

Position: Midfielder

Job he could have done: Given us some leadership and guile in midfield alongside Schneiderlin who is useless. Championed by those that know his brother (or something).

Job he has done: Injury prone journeyman pro, spell at P*mpey

Regret Factor: 2/10

I can't believe this one has got through unchallenged!!

I think Saint Charlie was referring to the viewpoint held at the time by a section of fans. Schneiderlin is not useless, and I would argue he is probably better than Howard now...

Some Moroccan or Algerian bloke in about 2003/4 , championed as a next big thing, Abuchu-minestrone or something, whilst Lowe was in charge. Never heard of again.

Also from that neck of the woods, Mido , or was he Ahmed Hossem at the time ?We probably missed a good player, but managed to avoid a few tantrums and sulks along the way.

Think there were a couple of Latvians who slipped the net as well, one who kept Pahars out of their national team for a while, but did not go on to set European football alight. Gorkks, of course was the must have CB at the start of last season.

And finally, from the golden age of Lowe, didn't we spend an entire summer in pursuit of Darius Vassel ?

Aboucherouane. Arguably our first YouTube player, scored a ridiculous goal from the right wing where he juggled it right foot, left foot, and then volleyed in with the right. On the basis of those 3 seconds of footage, he was a legend in the making. IIRC he actually signed, but we failed to get a work permit for him, which was obviously because we aren't Man United and not because those three seconds were an aberration in the career of a not-very-good player

Just because these players failed at other clubs does not mean they could have fitted in well with us and improved. Some players fit in better at some places better than others, and players can click in certain teams but not others. Having said that there is some rubbish listed

Ammar Jemal in our NPC promotion season. Left footed centre back, Tunisian, was all signed and sealed then the Don pulled the plug. We ended up getting Hooiveld. Anyone know where Jemal is these days?

Nowhere much, think he's back in Tunisia, went to Cologne, didn't do much, had one game for Ajaccio (Corsica) and then nothing. Think he has some sort of problem or other.Ah yes couldn't get on with the coach/manager and was afraid of the violence in Corsica. Nicola probably did one of the best things he's ever done in pulling the plug on Jemal. I do wonder if he doesn't run some sort of deep background checks or psychological tests on prospective players and that's why we pull the plug when everything seems to be finalised.

Michael Antonio - had the four qualities to make him a Saints fans favourite. Pace and being young, hungry and therefore guaranteed to improve. We were told he was excellent, far better than Puncheon and a future Premier league star. People ignored the fact that despite Have those 4 all important qualities he had little else. Last seen fight a championship relegation battle with Sheffild Wednesday.

LOL
