swannymere Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 The current board have stepped down and Crouch has returned with Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Kaka and Ronaldo. Some fans are still unhappy as they don't think he's showing enough ambition and the beer is flat. Hey-ho.
yorkie Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 Kelvin is in goal and McGoldrick starts up front. Surman & Lallana are both injured. Schneiderlin is not fully fit hence sits on the bench in case we need him. Rupert hasn't quite finalised his selection yet Jan - but as soon as he calls me and asks for some advice on whether to risk playing 4-4-2 I'll let you know! rocknrollman no2 Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 We will be playing an exciting new "Total Football" from Holland and we will play at home with one striker upfront(McGoldrick). Our midfield, and defence (last seasons reserve team),will provide cover and if that fails,we have plan B(which is to keep following plan A if we are losing 8-0). Rupert will pick the team and give a prematch talk in the dressing room, with Wilde providing the tea and biscuits at half time. Should be a walk in the park! Add to that: Saga is ineligible - thus McG, Paterson and BWP are our only fwds available (perm any 2 from 3) Parry and Lancashire ae our only fit CBs James is our only option at RB Either Rudi will continue at LB or Molyneux will be his debut (which would be madness IMO) for CM there is no Cork and it would be crazy (again, IMO) to rush Spiderman or Surman back for this match, so we will probably have G&G there again. Smith is the Giant Killer so will obviously start, but on the wrong side And Holmes is loved by all. This gives us: -------------------------Davis---------------------------- James---------Perry---------Lancashire---------Rudi ----------------Gillett-----------Gobern---------------- Smith------------------------------------------------Holmes --------------------------DMcG------------------------------ -------------------------------Paterson--------------------- Or something similar. Verbal Kint Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 I hope Jan/Lowe has at least done some homework for United although i fear he will simply tell them to go out and play their total football and all will be fine. A proper manager will have noticed that Evra is suspended so O'Shea will probably be left back. John O'Shea is not that great there. He is all right foot and can be done for pace at times. Definitely the weak spot in their team, so whatever we do we have to play a naturally wide right player with pace who will have a go at him. I guess the only option is McLaggon. If he plays Smith on the right it will prove without doubt that he is completely tactically inept (although that has already been proven to be honest?. I'd like to see Gillett start as of all our midfielders he is one of the few who can get in players' faces and make life difficult. Euell alongside him to provide some experience and for his engine. James is a disaster at right back but we all know he will play so it makes it doubly important we get back to having a shape that provides some cover for him, especially against a side like united. I'm afraid Jan/Lowe that involves ditching the stupid formation that doesn't work with the players we have. Davis James Perry Lancashire Skacel McLaggon Gillett Euell Holmes BWP McG In an ideal world i wouldn't want Lancashire anywhere near the team, but we have no one else. Ditto James. Saint Without a Halo Posted 3 January, 2009 Share Posted 3 January, 2009 makes the £185 for a ticket look interesting For £185 you can choose any three of the saints team to take home as souveniers at the end! or buy a pair of used boot laces from the united side! Master Bates Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Andrew Surman is set to play against Man Utd even though it may destroy his move to Fulham. Surman, 22, could arrive at Craven Cottage on loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer, with Chris Baird loaned back to Saints in return. BotleySaint Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Oh lord help us. Patterson isn't that bad for crying out loud. He has potential to be a good player for us and can score goals. It'll be hard work up front but either way it'll be a learning experience for him I am sure.
madruss Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 Agreed. IMO the player in the lone striker role should, aa a minimum, be able to win headers and Paterson has been the only striker we've used this season who can do this. His movement and finishing aren't quite there yet, but I'm sure those qualities will improve with time....something we don't have unfortunately
Saint_clark Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 On the plus side, Ferdinand, Tevez and Evra are all definately out, with it rumoured that Ronaldo won't even travel.

Charlie2008 Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 I think Jan should play Kayne McLaggon. He has been impressive on the wing in the last 2 matches IMO, creating chances and beating players, something we have needed. Also must play Surman to deter interest from Fulham and Spiderman is apparently fit again, so potentially midfield looks useful, with bodies on the bench if required... Similarly, Davis has to start to show our intent to keep our better players. The team selection (or more precisely, ommissions) could well be an advertisement for who we want to sell, so let's hope we field our stongest available side, not invent minor injuries for players who don't want to be cup-tied. Whatever happens, must play 4-4-2, surely?
Andy_Porter Posted 4 January, 2009 Share Posted 4 January, 2009 4-4-2 against the best attacking team in the country wouldn't be a great idea. For once our 4-5-1 will be an advantage imo, United will have all the possesion we just need to make sure we've got bodies behind the ball ready to counter when they make a mistake or we tackle. I think Patteson or McGoldrick up front solo will be out of their depth - need a foil for either. The pair may be an idea or BWP with either. Obviously my plan depends on every outfield player being on top form and the keeper playing a blinder, but if we don't take the game to them down the flanks, we may get hammered. I think sitting back and trying to counter might be a mistake. The game will be won or lost in midfield IMO and if the boys are up for it, which they jolly well should be, I believe we have every chance of success. Like in 2005 (6th round), the first goal will be crucial. As you will recall, we went on to lose that one 4-0 after a deflected Keane shot early doors.
