Hampshire CCC 2019 Season thread.

I find it really odd that a match and potentially a league could be decided by the amount of rainy days you get over a season. Just seems completely unfair.

At least it's better than the bad old days, when a rained out match gave 0 points to both teams (madness!) That gave Worcs the championship at Hants' expense.

As the saying goes

You must be getting old if you cannot remember why you feel annoyed at Worcestershire winning the 1974 Championship .

I seem to remember they had a dodgy one dayer on the last day of a rain affected match for 10 points and we got nothing at all. Might have been a different year though. I remember being in Honiton for some reason or other at the time though.

Seen it all before. At least the dodgy one dayers on the last day of rain affected matches are a thing of the past.

We'd have probably been better off if we were playing at Trent Bridge instead of some farmyard, colliery out-ground.

Trent Bridge doesn't seem much better with the amount of rain that's falling.

4 points for bowling Essex out for 84 in a one-dayer. They finished 2 points ahead

Another batting fiasco at Chelmsford again yesterday then. Why is it always at Chelmsford, seems to be virtually every season. Now Bopara will make about 350 and we'll lose by an innings.

Obviously we haven't addressed to problem of openers again and whilst we persevere with these young chaps, who are hit and miss, the real batsmen at 3 and 4 will be exposed to the new ball on virtually every occasion.

Well at least they dropped Soames but yes I struggle to understand why the opening position wasn’t addressed. Perhaps they assumed Vince wouldn’t be in the England World Cup squad but even that left one that needed replacing.

Shame really as a couple of half decent openers could have seen them challenge for the Championship. As it is their inconsistency will eventually cost them and we will probably finish about 5th.

Vince isn't really the answer opening in 4 day cricket. Far too impatient, if he gets bogged down he'll always try to drive one through the covers that he shouldn't.

Well well, some seemingly excellent bowling by Hants pace men, aided apparently by a ball change, has limited the Essex FIL to 96. Now we need some really stubborn batting from our openers, need to see them both there at the close, although it's not likely to happen.

Well what a forlorn hope that was, Alsop and Rahane gone already either side of lunch and we're 5/2 again. The county must adress the problem of openers if we're ever to be anything like consistent again. If it means that there's no money for an overseas player then so be it. Markram was great, Rahane looks feeble against fast bowling and the new ball.

And now Northeast has been stupidly stumped by totally not paying attention.

16/4 now, Rossouw comes in, hits four and then gets out next ball, do we have some sort of problem that is provoking our players into wanting to lose?

That's it, Donald out to another, stupid, stupid shot. We'll not even make them bat again as likely as not.

When's the next game ?

To lose by an innings when the opposition only just scraped 200 is abysmal.

Biggest question now is will we make 50.

We probably need to complain about the pitch, no way that Harmer should be on 11/5 on the second day of a match. Jeez I hate Essex and everything it stands for.

Ha, Kyle having a tonk, wouldn't it be great if we say make 97 or so for 8 or 9 and then it rains for 2 days.

Would have been nice, but required at least a modicum of bottle from the batsmen.

Hmm. A month ago I was thinking this might be our season

I wonder if things might not have turned out quite so disastrously if we had chosen to bowl first on that pitch?

Probably yes.

Shame they weren't bowled out for 40 something. Would've made an even stronger claim for an unsatisfactory pitch. Maybe Essex let the tail enders add a few runs to make it less obvious.

Not a chance with the opening pair of tail enders. Without wanting to sound like Dalek, the main thing is to avoid finishing bottom. Fortunately Warks, Notts and Kent should make that a straightforward task.

Somerset will probably mess it up :(

Well they've got off to a reasonable start against Hants today, 52/1. With our batting that starts at 3 and fnishes at 5 they might pick up a few points.

Will Alsop be able to bat?

Will be a bit of a blow if he can't, even if it's just to hang around with one of the others. Chasing 400+, with Soames gone after 3 balls or so will be hard enough as it is.

Abbott says Alsop should be able to bat but not take the wicket keeper gloves for the rest of the match.

Well tbh making them bat again will be an achievement already, given our last batting performance..

Can we have a sub wicky or does it have to be one of the original XI?

We could get a sub WK but he would not be able to bat. Donald is the sub taking the role so Alsop can bat

Right, I know that subs can't bat or bowl but wasn't sure if wicketkeeper was judged to be a specific role not to be filled by a sub.

Another inauspicious day for Soames and Crane.

Can’t really see that Vince and Dawson are benefitting too much by being in England’s World Cup squad; except, I suppose, financially.

Hampshire sure ain’t benefitting.

The only time a replacement player can do everything is following a head injury and concussion meaning he is out for the rest of the match. Otherwise, if the opposing captain agrees, we can bring in a specialist Wicket Keeper to keep if player is out but he cannot bat in either innings. That is why they are using Donald as sub so Alsop can bat

Hants fighting back a bit at tea, 246/5 I think. Rahane,Northeast and Rossouw made 200 between them, pity they aren't doing that from a platform of 50 or 60 without loss. Down to Fuller and Barker to try to get us up to 300 now.

All out for 349, so 1 short of the 4th batting point then. Bowlers now getting hammered, well Crane in particular really, as Somerset look to set us a big target as soon as possible. Not over confident of not losing again.

So Hants set 418, which of course they have virtually no chance of getting, Abbott opened with Soames but of course Soames didn't survive for very long. Whoever is persisting with Soames instead of Donald just needs sacking, the sooner the better.

In fairness Soames did twice as well in the second innings as the first. In the first innings he only lasted 3 balls, but in the second he managed to last for 6 balls.

Well, that's true of course, he'll be opening for England in the Ashes at that rate of improvement, so much the better for Hants, anywhere but here.:lol:

Yep, Abbot opened with Soames in place of Wetherley who turned his ankle fielding.

So that’s one batsman already gone, two batsmen injured, and at least 96 overs for the remainder to negotiate tomorrow.

Unless, of course, we knock off the required 406 runs first.

Didn't make lunch then, 104/9, Weatherly didn't bat, Alsop made the effort to come to the crease but Crane got out anyway. Just another shambles, nothing much else to add. We won't go down, we won't win the CC and I'd guess the players are more up for the T20 than anything else now.

Warks at home today, looks like Holland and Organ are going to open the batting, let's face it it can't be any worse than Soames and Weatherly really. McManus to keep wicket, Donald back in, no Crane.

Oh FFS: 13/2 again. Organ made 1 and Rahane out for 4, not a great investment by the looks of it.

13/2 so no change there, plus our over rate will be horrendous without a spinner. Probably looking at Organ and Rossouw to bowl a few offies with 3 first class wickets between them.

111/2 at lunch, much better then. Northeast past 50 and Holland showing that he can bat sensibly. Might have ridden his luck a bit in the early overs though.

Organ and Rahane will be kicking themselves at missing out on this deck!

Donald thinks this is a 50 over match. 21 fours and 5 sixes already! Making a statement about being dropped in place of Soames?

Holland seems to always do well when called upon. Not sure why he's not been given a better crack than he has so far - albeit I've never actually seen him play!

Donald is a good player, far more experience than Weatherley, Soames or Organ. Just suppose we're trying to impose home grown players rather than Donald or Holland who came from elsewhere.
