Read in the paper this morning about a bloke who bet £5 on a 5-race accumulator at the Cheltenham Festival.

His first 4 horses all came in and the fifth was due to run at 13.20 today.

Betfair said that he could cash out after 4 races, winning approx £250000. He declined as, if his horse won today, he'd pick up about £500000.

Managed to watch the race. His horse fell at the 2nd fence.

Don't believe in signs, but earlier this month I said goodbye to my dad and as he was born in Scotland his final song at the service was Flower of Scotland played by the Royal Scots Dragoons. Picked up his ashes today and as I get home I see on the TV that there's a horse running in the 15:15 at Cheltenham called...Flower of Scotland.

He passed just before my birthday. I'll take this as a present from beyond the grave.

Back in 2013 the elder of my 2 brothers died.

We were discussing funeral arrangements and, as part of that, what music we should have. I thought about the old Hollies song "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" but, for some reason, I didn't say anything which I later regretted.

A few weeks later we'd just finished clearing his bungalow. I got back to the car, turned the key, and that song started on the radio. It wasn't half way through, it started from the beginning at the moment I turned the key almost as if it was waiting for me.

Spooky.

circa 10/1 odds and only double the money? Cash out all day.

A genuine mastermind and a sad loss to this forum.

He posted a couple of weeks ago as his current alias, so must still be lurking. Shame we don't hear more about his winnings.

He did cash out, he's got 250k.

Yes. He would have won £511k if he hadn't cashed out and the horse won. Instead he partially cashed out and picked up £250k. If the horse had won today he would have picked up £320k.

In my eyes he did the right thing. He picked up a life changing amount and had the thrill of watching his horse run today knowing that he could pick up an extra £70k if it won. Unfortunately for him it did not.

So basically he had the option of betting £250,000 on one race in the hope of only doubling his money at best?

The horse, Envoi Allen, started the race as odds on favourite, although he backed it at 9-2 last year. The cash out value was based on this morning's odds - he actually had about £125k carried forward from the first 4 bets.

The horse was Irish trained and started at odds on. I.e. You would not have doubled your money if you had walked into a bookies and backed it singly.

In the first 2 days Irish trained horses at odds on have won the first race and it was a shock that this horse did not win.
