Why lock the "forum slow" thread?

I don't understand why the mods locked the "forum slow again" thread.

It makes them look bad - as if they are silencing any criticism.

FWIW I found the forum to be absolutely fine today, unlike during the Norwich game.

But if you lock the thread, you kill the chance of feedback from users which would be a lot more useful than merely "looking into it".

Maybe there is a good reason for doing it - care to elaborate?

PS I have AS on ignore, so I don't know if what he posted was a factor......

Wasn't him who locked it.

The point is - it ALMOST stopped me posting that the forum speed was fine for me today. So any problems must have been down to the user's connection or ISP?

Nah, it was really slow towards the end of the game. Nothing wrong with my isp or connection.

IT was me that posted the original question, if anyone else suffered the same problem.

I was not moaning just wondering if others had difficulty.

For a long time i have had no problem, probably not since we were on the other server, the norwich matchday this week was however pretty bad, as was today, mainly in the second half of the game.

Others, if i recall, had the same probs on on the last matchday.

Gotta say it's very slow for me at the moment. I dont think it is down to my ISP either (SKY) as all other url's load fine. That said - I rarely find too many problems with the forum - generally works well - obviously there are gremlins about tonite...!

I suspect it's more of a server sharing problem than a problem with this forum per se.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, as I don't confess to be a techie, but if you lock the other boards to stop people posting on them surely more bandwidth or whatever for this forum?

I'm not too sure either, but let's say, for example, that we share the server with Charlton's forum, then if we cut our usage from 50% to 30%, Charlton's mob might just soak up the extra 20% for themselves? Depends if we have a fixed allocation on the server or not I guess. Pass.

For the amount paid the forum should be on a dedicated server.

I did a ping route trace during the game after the second goal and the problem is with the amount of connections to the server not anyones ISP.

I think baj made a mistake falling for the sales speal from Tagadab/Claranet when he should of checked them out first regards running a forum with high connections once or twice a week during the football season.

Maybe next time around the forum would be better off looking at a company that specialise in high server loads such as that used for online radio stations, the cost would of been the same.

It would make no difference because its the amount of requests that are made not the number of pages shown thats causing the problem.

Slow here from just around the time of the second goal onwards. Hey ho, it's to be expected with us all hitting F5 every two minutes!

It started slowing down from the second goal on after the final whistle took about ten minutes to be able to post again, just kept crashing.

Yeah - I had the same problem - crashed after second goal and then slow connection for about 30 - 35 mins. Therearfter - normal service was restored - all fine now.

Posters may like to know, or completely ignore, as is their want, that at 9.58pm yesterday [that's the night of the Ipswich game, for those a few days on from here] that there were 793 members on this forum [a record] at the same time. Being as there was a key match on, and that Saints were in the lead at 1-0 at the time, I bet they were all trying to post or read messages, pretty much on the same forum, if not the same thread.

Now forgive me for being a bit understanding of technology, but your website is going to slow down in response time with that much activity. As I wrote while in the thick of things... perhaps some of us should go to another website and ease the pressure on this one.

Of course, with only a fraction of those left so long after the match, the response time is back to normal. Perhaps posters might note the correlation.

BTW, as far as I could see, the website never crashed, but did slow down to almost stop. I got through every time, with patience, though.

Oh, I didn't close the slowwww thread, either.

I think you should consider making AwaySaint1 an admin as he seems to know what hes talking about. Baj and Steve have done a good job, but the more experience the better.

I have also run a forum so if you wish to employ my services in an advisory capacity i'd be willing to help out for a small fee.:)
