trousers Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 (edited) Same team or time to inject a few fresh legs? http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/article.php?page_id=11467 Saints' Dutch coach refused to use 'tiredness' as an excuse for his team's first defeat in four matches. Southampton came off second best against promotion chasing Birmingham City at St. Andrew's, but according to Wotte, the recent glut of fixtures was not behind Saints' 1-0 defeat. "It was obviously a third game in a week for Birmingham too," he said, "so it's an easy excuse but I won't use it. "Maybe, you never know, not a lot of players are used to playing this kind of rhythm to play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, with so much pressure. "We gave three matches everything, 100 per cent, and I think you need to keep it as simple as possible. We will have to make a quick switch to two home games and we have to be as good as the matches against Cardiff and Preston North End to beat both Derby and QPR and it's a big challenge for us." Wotte will also be expecting improved performances from many of the players who he felt weren't up to their recent high standards against Birmingham. "I thought Chris Perry and Kelvin Davis played an excellent game yesterday, but the rest could play better. "Our strikers didn't show as much quality as they have over the last couple of weeks. Marek and Jason and Matt Paterson, they were trying, but I think the two central defenders of Birmingham City played an excellent game as well and I give credit to them. "David McGoldrick had a very poor game I thought and I took him off at half time. Matt Paterson came on and he will always give you a lot of passion and he's trying. "They had to rotate with Jason Euell in the hole, because Jason's strong as well up front. But I felt that we couldn't win anything in the air, so then you have to change your play and you have to play more on the floor. "A 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City is not disgraceful, but it's frustrating that we didn't compete with them to get a point at least." slickmick Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 Strange that we have to rely on DMG to play well. Don't like the idea of dropping Euell to the midfield to compensate. For me, he made to many positional changes during the game, it made things complicated. If DMG isnt up for it against Derby then let someone else come in and play that role and leave the rest of the players in their positions.
Charlie Wayman Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 So why can't McGoldrick & Saganowski score goals every week when we need them like Rooney and Giggs?
david in sweden Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 So why can't McGoldrick & Saganowski score goals every week when we need them like Rooney and Giggs? .....surely it depends on the service they get from midfield. I don't think Giggs or Rooney have the same problem as Saints do... the role that DMG plays (in the " hole" ) is vital to feed the two front men, and if that doesn't work then it's a problem. IF not DMG ? Who is the best passer of the ball from our midfield ? Lallana, Surman, Gillett..or ? Euell is undoubtedly more effective up front, so he's best kept there ..so what is plan B? Arizona Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 I'd like to give Skacel a go in the hole if DMG is looking jaded. That would risk unsettling the defence a bit, but I'm almost certain we'd score more.
Bailey Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 If Lallana is fit, put him in the hole to replace McGoldrick, with Schneiderlin to continue out on the right. That way, Euell is still up top with Saganowski. Lallana is often wasted out wide and he tends to drift inside more often than not anyway. We need to get him on the ball and play through him to get the best out of him. ------------------ Davis ----------------- James ----- Saeijs ----- Perry ----- Skacel ---------------- Gillett ------------------- ----- Schneiderlin ----- Surman ----------- ---------------- Lallana ------------------ ------------ Saga ----- Euell -------------

forever a red and white Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 there wouldn't be enough bit in the midfield for that. Skacel could play behind the strikers but who at LB. Not DMy.

In my eyes thats where Lallana will be most effective and should have been tried there ages ago.

You could bring in Molyneux and move Skacel in the hole or drop Surman back to LB bring in AN Other to LM (depending on who is fit or available) and use Skacel in the hole. Another possibility is using Surman in the hole with Molyneux at LB and Skacel at LM.

Sheff Saint Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 I thought our midfield was too samey on Saturday. Gillette was the pick for me, a little scrappy thing winning lots of ball. But Morgan and Surman lost the physical battle too easily. We looked very one-dimensional. Not sure how we played in the three we won as didn't see them so it may have been a blimp (but it was very similar to the Bristol City game last month), but i'd be tempted to push Skacel into a more attacking role and give Llanana the chance ahead of McGoldrick. I think we need the early goal tomorrow. All the last few wins have come with us getting a lead in the first half hour.

The new shape we seem to be playing could be a much better fit for Adam anyway. No way I'd touch the defence, keep the experience of Skacel there unless injury demands changes. Oh and thanks for the good wishes from many about the 3 day hangover at the egg chasing. I'm much better now thankyou. Should be out of rehab in time for the next installment in December
BotleySaint Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 I wouldn't put Lallana in the role. Because in the games where McG has played there, and played well, he's been very important defensively. Clearning a lot of headers and getting in the right places. I don't think Lallana is defensive enough. Unless we get another of the midfielders to take over that. If Lallana is going to play in that role, I would be more inclined to bring someone like Wotton in behind him, perhaps in place of Schneiderlin in order to help Gillett out a bit. It would also give Lallana a free role to roam which is arguably when he produces his best football.
Andy_Porter Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 I'd leave it as it is, if McGoldrick is injured then bring in Lallana. Certainly wouldn't **** about with the team too accomodate Skacel in the hole.

Defensively McGoldrick wins headers at set peices but apart from that I thnk Lallana offers just as much in that position if not more.

But Lallana is struggling though with this knock.

Do Rooney and Giggs score goals every week then?? I thought the main strike force at Man U now is any two of Tevez,Ronaldo and Berbatov.
St Marco Posted 9 March, 2009 Share Posted 9 March, 2009 To be fair though DMG has played a hell of a lot of games this year. He had a total mare at the weekend again, so he should be dropped for this one. If i had to choose i would go with --------------Davis--------- James----Saeijs----Perry---Skacel --------------------------------- ------------Wotten-------------- -------------------------------- ------Gillett----------Surman---- --------------------------------- -------------Lallana--------------- --------------------------------- ------Saga-----------Euell----------- Schniderlin has been a bit below par for awhile now, maybe give him and DMG a break from the team.
