Guided Missile Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 I came across this old post from the Saints Forum: Was anyone else in The Golden Lion pre-match, Wilde came in and had a couple of beers with the 3/400 Saints fans in there, I thought that was a nice touch, found it quite amusing him singing along to 'Swing Lowe' etc I told him to keep Bale and he said 'He is not going anywhere for 18 months, minimum. I said I would hold him to that and his response was "That is fine, come to the stadium and knock on my door if I am wrong " Love it top man and as he says he is a 'fan' so why not. Yup, saw him in the golden lion, Would we ever have seen rupert lowe do that? Or any other chairman? Bailey Nice touch from Wilde! After all, he is a fan just like the rest of us but nice to see him keeping in touch with the fans. Fair play to Wilde for drinking with the fans, despite having a high reputation and being 'famous' He really is a good man. Well done michael wilde. Proving to be a brilliant chairman. Dear God, please don't allow another fan-friendly Chairman into our club and that includes any one from Crouch, McMenemy and Le Tissier. We need a professional.... Clapham Saint Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Are "fan-friendly" and "professional" mutually exclusive? Don't think "fan-friendly" and "professional" are mutually exclusive but perhaps "self publicising" and "professional" are. Wile was clearly on an ego trip at the time of those posts and looking to milk it for all it was worth.
ottery st mary Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 GM...You should be our next Chairman.....An old pro who nobody wants to drink with...Problem solved. Mind you if you buy brandy all night I will drink with you...No shouting or bullying though.. I will help you out with the football bit.....Then again our last few Chairman had not a clue about football.......or financial matters now I think about it. Scummer Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 I want a chairman who hates all football fans with a vengeance. If he spits on us, or pours boiling tar on our heads as we enter the ground, then he'd be close to ideal.

Guided Missile Posted 7 May, 2009 Author Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Are "fan-friendly" and "professional" mutually exclusive? Actually, they are. Any Football Club Chairman who makes decisions based on whether they will be popular with the fans is unprofessional (IMO).

Whereas any chairman who makes decisions without a second of consideration for how the fans will react will get the club relegated and put into administration. Oh.... Wes Tender Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Actually, they are. Any Football Club Chairman who makes decisions based on whether they will be popular with the fans is unprofessional (IMO). Not strictly correct, surely? If you had added "purely" between decisions and based, then you might have a point. Otherwise it can be argued that as a large percentage of the revenue of the current business is generated by the paying fans, then taking decisions that ignore their wishes or alienate them, would be stupid. aintforever Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Actually, they are. Any Football Club Chairman who makes decisions based on whether they will be popular with the fans is unprofessional (IMO). A chairman can be fan-friendly without making decisions based on popularity with the fans. They just have to make their decision, give the fans an honest reason behind it and treat them with respect. Not alienate them, insult them and feed them a pack of lies.
SaintDonkey Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Similar to Mike Ashley isn't it? If we got a chairman like Mike Ashley - who has ploughed nearly 250 million pounds into Newcastle - would we really have cause for complaint? I know Newcastle fans who hate him with a passion - and he looks likely to be a chairman who brings about relegation. However surely the blame for that relegation lies more with the managerial appointments, some of which you can argue were forced on Ashley by the fans in their constant pursuit of a Geordie messiah. Frank's cousin Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 "Came across"? That would've taken a bit of searching, surely? Still funny though. Or not. Indeed, was funny though - It is tricky whatever your perspective - when desperate for something new that will improve things, there is a tendency to grasp at whatever positives there are - in Wilde case the 'good old down to earth bit' supported by the now legendary investors.... I dont want/need a chairman who is constantly on a charm offensive or sycophantic towards fans, I want someone who does what is necessary, difficult or otherwise, but has the communication skills to get fans to understand WHY those decions were necessary - and a naturally a fan base that can accept that its not always easy or about a black or white decision - so got feck all chance there then ;-)

Pancake Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 I agree GM, its shocking what people "say" online, especially when in the future it looks rather silly. With Saints through to the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Arsenal, things have never looked better for the team. The U19's top their division with just one loss and the U17 team are second in their's. With Chris Baird, "One Size" Fitz Hall, Darren Kenton and Leandre Griffit all about to break into the first team, the future is bright; it's red and white. Guided Missile Posted 7 May, 2009 Author Share Posted 7 May, 2009 I agree GM, its shocking what people "say" online, especially when in the future it looks rather silly. That was in response to the question: "Are there any promising youngsters in your squad?" 5 years ago, as you well know, Pancake....and I think it is pretty accurate, given the circumstances at the time. We had a great youth team with every reason to be excited about the future. It just shows how the club has been f***ed up since, by a number of Chairmen... In all honesty, GM is right Ahh yes I remember Wilde being tempted by the cheap beer on offer... IIRC those of us who pointed out the incredible lack of professionalism in keeping Derby's board waiting were put firmly in our places with reminders of how wonderful it was to finally have a chairman who preferred to spend time with fans rather than hob-nobbing with other chairmen. Maybe GM will dig out those classic quotes too :-)
Sheff Saint Posted 7 May, 2009 Share Posted 7 May, 2009 Actually, they are. Any Football Club Chairman who makes decisions based on whether they will be popular with the fans is unprofessional (IMO). Surely EVERYTHING the chairman does should be what the fans want? Of course, short term that can't always be the case. If we owe the bank £4million and someone offers us £5 million for DMG (after questioning their sanity) the chairman should take it. The fans might want to keep DMG but they want a club more. If you're not thinking of the fans why are you bothering?

I don't think I have ever seen such a high percentage of p1ssed up Saints fans as Southend away! Absolute carnage, to the degree that the police had advised all pubs and clubs to check I.D's for peoples addresses in the evening, and refuse entry to anyone from Southampton. That was a harsh trip home the next day! A few puke stops on the hard shoulder on the way home I seem to recall!

StuRomseySaint Posted 8 May, 2009 Share Posted 8 May, 2009 That was a cracking day out! Every pub was asking for ID to see if we were from Southampton! I know, about 30 of us were staying in the Travelodge. After getting showered and changed, we made our way to Varsity. Some of my mates were already in there after blagging themselves as locals. We went to go in 2's and 3's so not to rouse suspicion. My turn... Bouncer: " Alright mate, where are you from? " Stu: "Essex, why? " Bouncer: " Where in Essex? " Stu: " Gravesend " Bouncer: "That's in Kent you stupid c*nt" Stu: " F*ck, I meant to say Grays " Bouncer: " You're not coming in this pub or any other pub, Police have advised every pub and nightclub in Southend not to let people from Southampton in " Stu: "F*ck " lol, silly me getting Grays and Gravesend mixed up. Did manage to get into a nightclub though, managed to blag it into Wetherspoons and each pick a bird who we bought a pint on entering the nightclub in return for posing as their boyfriends. The bouncers face was a sight once they realised there was 30 absolutely wasted Southampton fans in the corner of their nightclub.
