Nigel Adkins will take charge of S****horpe United's match tomorrow
lordswoodsaints replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
I'm with this,I did mention the same thing on another thread yesterday. There are plenty of capable managers out there who are unemployed......and unemployed doesn't indicate failure as some have stated, every manager at some point has 'failed',there aren't many that havnt. -
The Good Old Days - but would you want them back?
lordswoodsaints replied to dune's topic in The Saints
I drive up archers road a few times a week and I have to admit that seeing those flats where the dell was really p!sses me off. When I was a kid I used to look up at the flats that overlooked the dell and dream of owning the top floor so I could watch the games from the balcony. When I drive up Milton or archers road with the kids I always make a point of telling them about it.....not that they're interested :-) Loving the nostalgia on this thread....makes a change from the rest of the crap going on. -

I think Adkins is walking a very fine line,he is sitting on the fence and hedging his bets,he is showing no loyalty to either the scunny fans nor us. Fans are not stupid, the scunny fans will turn on him if he's not careful.....as for us lot, well he is not our manager yet but if it happens then a few will question his focus on the job. The situation may not be of his doing but he is not helping his cause with any sets of fans IMO. -
Where were you when I was fighting in the name of my club? I don't know how old you are but in the 80's I followed saints home and away pretty much every game,in those days you had no choice but to fight just to see your team play football. The police were always waiting to give you a beating for no reason and then you had to face the home fans, all this before you even got to the ground, then there would usually be trouble in the ground followed by a fight to get back to your train.......if you didn't hit first you got hit. And besides I didn't want to ruin the designer clothes I just nicked.

The Good Old Days - but would you want them back?

If somebody said you could have the dell back and enjoy the sort of atmosphere that I loved as a kid in the 70's/80's I would rip their arms off. St marys is too sterile for me,the atmosphere is crap,it could be my age but the buzz has gone from football. Money dominates and players are just not approachable anymore. I wish we never moved I don't feel at home like I used to. -
Fonte came because his club was in financial trouble. To answer your question I don't know who I would have gone for but I would have gone for the best man available, somebody who has managed at the highest level, somebody with plenty of contacts, somebody who wouldn't take any sh!t off of the players.....but most importantly somebody who could get us into the prem in the shortest time. The above is certainly not Adkins,he has done well in his short time as manager but I would prefer an established manager, who has done his 'up and coming' already,Adkins is a gamble IMO,a gamble that I am not willing to back.

I'm with you on this one......if he didn't want the job he would have turned us down before the interview.....damage limitation with the bompey fans me thinks.
-
Did she do that whilst you made jiggy jiggy?
-
One mans x factor is another mans wow factor.....I am a very hard man to please so for me to gasp 'WOW' would take a lot more than Nigel Adkins.
-
Whatever the reasons are for the adkins deal falling through I think the right decision has been made....why go for a manager that is already employed and comes with a compensation package when you could employ one of the 90 or so managers that are out of work and spend the money that has been put aside for compensation on a decent player? Just a thought!
-
Cheap option.....no wow factor for me.
-
Cheap option and an indication of how the club is planning to operate IMO. I would prefer it if he got his 'big break' elsewhere, always aim as high as you can afford and I don't think this has happened.

Probably Another manager next summer then.

The important questions i would be asking myself if it was my decision is has Adkins ever been under pressure at scunny? What is the expectation levels from the locals like because from day one he is going to be under extreme pressure to deliver this season and the expectation from us fans will surely be greater than he has encountered up there.....this is no way a dig at scunny fans it is just the reality of the job he is walking into....if the rumours are true of course. -

I don't think you can compare what lawrie did 30 or 40 years ago with what could or could not be achieved today.... Football has moved on,it is a different era,it is a completely different game. Greed dominates the game and because of that fans are less tolerant, clubs and fans on the whole expect instant success, managers don't get the time they used to have. Back in the day if football had been like it is today lawrie wouldn't have lasted as long as he did. -
Scunny fans think Adkins Too Good For Us!

Tbh I'd be p!ssed off if my manager jumped ship for a lower club.....it's a bit of a kick in the teeth. -
I don't know how you arrived at these 2 names but it is common knowledge that at least 2 prem managers were interested.....aim as high asbyou can afford is my moto.

Tbf I don't really care too much who is in charge as long as they get us out of this sh!tty league but what this appointment says to me is that cortese has gone for the cheap option and the club are entering a new phase of not spending good money on good players and once again relying on the academy and unknown players.....a bit like the poortvliet saga. I honestly thought we had moved away from the cheap option, let's not kid ourselves this is the cheap option. All if true of course. -

If true severely underwhelmed....really can't see people flocking to see the new messiah. Are we really the man city of l1? -
Who said anything about 'failed' prem managers?,they could well be current managers looking for a fresh challenge... Tbh most managers have failed at some point. You could probably count on one hand the number of clubs out of 91 that have had long term managers in place, people shouldnt be worried with having a high yield of managers.....spurs,man city,Liverpool,Chelsea all seem to be doing ok. Tbh I don't give a rats arse about stability, because it doesn't really exist, players and managers come and go and if they do well they deserve to better themselves,we might not be happy about it but that's the reality. My only concern is getting my club up the leagues and if that means changing the manager every year or two then so be it. Loyalty in football is a very very rare thing,so we have to accept that players will come and go but this doesn't mean our club is unstable it just means that our club is as normal as the rest of the 91 clubs.
-
I know that, but some people on here think that only managers that have been through the lower league mix before are qualified.........me?, I say aim as high as you can afford, anybody who doesn't have at least prem experience wouldn't even get a second glance tbh.
-
What I can't understand is why everybody thinks it is Adkins when sky,the echo and others are reporting that 2 premier league managers have applied for the job....ok,I know we probably have a wage budget to work to and perhaps a prem manager may not know how to get us out of this league but if prem quality managers are applying then that should tell us that our club is actually a desired job and perhaps we should be fishing a bit deeper than some of the names mentioned. I have a feeling that Adkins is just a smokescreen,he may well of been approached and told he is on the shortlist but I just cannot see cortese appointing somebody that the press have been speculating on,he would see the leak as failure IMO.
