Which is why one should always look on the bright side of life, (if possible )

Life's what you make it. As talk talk once said.

Sounds like a load of old cock to me. Myths like this often crop up as if inspired by some idealised ******** from spending too much time renting horse**** films from Blockbusters, but quite honestly, it is all crap. If one can't stand on their own two feet in this country, then what ****ing hope have they got ****ing off to some god forsaken third world hellhole where the home comforts are nowhere to be seen?

What a fabulous actor who took it seriously, whether on the stage or on screen. Spielberg once said he was the best actor in the world and with his range and application you can see why. Will be sadly missed but has left a terrific catalogue of fine acting for our enjoyment. RIP

You poor love. Didn't you try and sell it to them that you were trying to bring it down* from the inside? * whatever "it" is, i don't know what you do.

Greedy Stupid Unions (Main Board & Lounge all in one)
Special K replied to Gemmel's topic in The Lounge
I failed to appreciate the magnitude of Gemmels influence. Strewth, if i'd known he was so powerful i wouldn't have immediately lost my sense of proportion or balance when i first saw the title of the thread, as I was predetermined to do in the Verbal Universe. Gemmel, you need to calm down mate, cause and effect and all that. -

Pork bellies? Is that used to make bacon, which you may find in a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich? -
It's a shame you can't respond without being condescending, but i suppose that's the way you are wired. Granted, i take my information second hand; i know a producer that works for Tiger Aspect and someone who works at Working Title (name dropping i know, ahem!). They say that the good graduates will always get work and generally do very well, but there are an increasing number who fail to even get in the door. I don't think it's very fair that their are too many places on courses for jobs when we end up importing doctors for our hospitals and (despite the recession) there is a shortgae of tradesmen and professionals in the industry i know very well; construction. I was fortunate enough to be on a TV set and the vast majority of people are the support crew performing the background tasks to make it all happen. The only real exception to this is in animation. And i never said it was useless Verbal, you are firing from the hip again.

I'd rather it was Terry Jones from Monty Python fame.

That's all very well, but what "well trained" graduate is going to want to spend their life doing the carpentry or electrical works or decorating or traffic control or burger flipping whatever more menial tasks make up 95% of film set and pre production works in the industry? They go to Uni dreaming of becoming the next Steven Spielberg or Guy Ritchie or (heaven forbid) Julian Fellowes. The opportunity aint there for the numbers of graduates that come out. Maybe they'll be lucky enough to work in post porduction, but there aren't that many jobs there either. Maybe they'll get a script together, but it's pretty much a closed shop getting anything through the door in the first place.

Al Green - I Gotta be More - just about to be followed by I'm a Ram.

Mick, i think they might need to re appraise the methods they use to demonstrate. Yeah, i think they need to be held accountable. We don't need to see this sort of thing again, it's almost as boring as one of Verbals condensending diatribes. It's in their interests to promote their cause in a way that makes them more likely to achieve their objectives.
-
Of course, not, but someone or something needs to be held accountable. In the case of football, it's the club who get fined. In this case the Student body who organised the demo need to be held accountable. It seems like a minority of people, whether students or not, were responsible for the violence and as it was as a result of the demo, then the organisers need to answer questions. If this is going to happen in the future, then they need to question their methods of protest.

Teh internet is full of examples, just a few above. Or maybe i'm wrong? Maybe a BA in Dance with Equine Studies is just what this country needs? And Clegg and Cameron are trying to SORT OUT the problem not implement it, or is that too difficult for you to understand? Did you do a BSc in Firing from the Hip perchance?

So you assume that turning Polytechnics into universities was the only dilution of the HE system, but you are wrong. The real dilution occurred with the target setting of numbers of graduates that academic institutions responded the quickest way they could; by offering more and more courses of the lowest denomination. Maybe you need to brush up on a bit of modern political history. And if it's not the fault of those baby boomers in government, unable to provide a cohesive education strategy for the next 50 years, who's fault is it? You may think it's a cliche, but you offer nothing to back up this tired and tiresome response.
-
This. The dilution of the HE system in this country is one of the most shocking examples of modern political interference, ineptitude and egomania. All this by a generation who had their education free and have decided to **** it all up for future generations. What is being proposed now is the best of a bad set of solutions. I can understand the ire of students, however the real villians of the piece are not Clegg and Cameron, but the previous Labour administration.

You can go to a structural engineer for the info, but if the project is small in size, the builders you get to quote for the works will have enough experience in advising you of what is needed (provided you go to a reputable contractor). Just make sure that whoever you use has the relevant insurances in place when they start the works. If the project is a larger scheme, then you should get an architect to draw up some plans and either they will know or will know who to use to get advise on what is needed.
