That to my mind would be catastrophic. NC cannot claim to be seeking to ensure promotion this season, whilst at the same time procrastinating over a decision which could well decide whether or not that promotion occurs. After tonight's pathetic result, let's imagine we draw or lose to Rochdale, with still no manager in sight. We then lose or draw the next game - perfectly possible, and perhaps probable - and find ourselves 9 to 12 points adrift at this early stage. In what way has NC then given himself and his new man a chance of achieving this much vaunted objective of getting promoted? I cannot believe he is so naive as to think that this inter-reginal period will have no effect on the team; he cannot be that simple. And if the Pardew sacking has been coming, he must have been putting out feelers. This has to be sorted by Saturday, and my gut feeling is that it will be, irrespective of what people may be hearing and what news outlets are putting out. If it isn't sorted by Saturday, or very soon thereafter, it could be way too late and NC can kiss any hope of promotion goodbye.

Seconded. Very much a "wind out of sails" last few days, not helped by tonight's roll-over-and-die result. Still, onwards and upwards I suppose. What else can you do? NC has to pull a rabbit out of a hat now, or else he can expect Saturday's gate to be the highest of the next few months....

Is there anything less attractive in a human being than arrogance and ignorance combined? Shame on you, sir.

I think your argument falls apart almost as soon as it begins. It was, and continues to be, widely reported that it was NC who brought the idea of buying the club to ML, not the other way round. Why would he therefore feel any less passionate about the job in hand now? If anything, he would feel more inclined to get us to the 'promised land' of the PL, as a lasting memorial for his friend Markus. I have met NC on two occasions, and whilst I could not claim to know his innermost thoughts, speaking to him you get a sense that this man is driven; quitting is not something he does. If he sets out to do something, it will get done. That is why I feel no less confident about our future now than I did before Markus's sad passing.

If memory serves, he only signed a further one year extension to his contract at Carlisle in the summer. Not that that necessarily means anything of course. Odd though...

Afternoon all Have a huge favour to ask; I will be in Ste Foy la Grande, nr Bergerac, from July 31st to Aug 15th. Is there anybody in or around that area who will be watching / knows how/ where to watch Saints v Plymouth? I won't have Internet access whilst away but am happy to go to a bar / someone's house (if invited!) if anybody with local knowledge can point me in the right direction. All help gratefully received.

Unequivocally, fellow Man of Kent :-)

Last time I went to a friendly at Barnet, circa 1998, Mark Hughes had just signed and I saw him, Carlton Palmer and John Beresford arguing with a security guard who was refusing to let Palmer and Beresford out of the car park until they agreed to move their cars. I wonder what will happen tonight....

In which case, count me in!!

A new English national anthem... where do you stand?

Am with those who feel very little when GSTQ is played. 'Abide with me' at cup finals has more of a goosebump effect. Interestingly, the lyrics of 'Jerusalem' are of course by William Blake, fervent opponent of organised religion and of the evils perpetrated by the state. 'I Vow to Thee my Country' was, musically, penned by Gustav Holst - a Brit of Latvian extraction - as part of Jupiter in the Planets suite. I would probably plump for IVTTMC if I had to, rather than that puerile subservient nonsense I generally ignore these days, but otherwise would happily see the thing disappear. Does it really have a purpose anymore, other than to stir up nationalist sentiment in a world where nations and their borders are increasingly redundant? -
I had the same problem, before I realised that you have to enter your predictions and then you will appear in the league table.
