  1. Looks like just the one sicky required then, assuming we win the group. I'll take Ze Germans in the Round of 16 and then France in the quarters. If we're going to win it at least win it properly
  2. lol @ the badger's arse comment. Had always assumed (like most BA pilots back then) that he was a public school type, now I have a vision of Channon's dulcet tones delivering that ultimate expression of calmness & resolve under pressure
  3. The Golac goal in that 80s compilation is a complete rocket, who needs fancy boots and balls?
  4. I think the na na na version alternates with the full version so you get a version with words followed by a version with the na nas... At least that's how it was on Sunday on the Northam
  5. 6 years old (almost) making a model of a Messerschmit ME 109 (about as un-Southampton as a boy can get, although I was making it to hang in front of the Spitfire) in the living room with Mum & Dad. Don't remember a great deal about it apart from being annoyed I had nothing yellow to wear on the morning of the game. Afterwards the adults spent their winnings on beer and BBQ stuff, us kids had unsupervised access to what seemed like unlimited jelly, ice cream, and coke. Happy days. Next day saw the parade up at Donkey Common on Burseldon Rd, stood there shaking a Heineken can from the night before filled with gravel, no doubt helping the hangovers all around.
  6. Define old - for me it was Channon, Williams, Danny Wallace, Moran, and Phil Boyer (mainly because he was top scorer in Div 1 one season)
  7. Worst. Keeper. EVER
  8. Should have had 6 or 7, brilliant performance. Lambert is a class above, our best striker since Beatts. Lallana played well and we bossed midfield. The most fun I've had @ St Marys for a very long time, particularly all the Mario songs
  9. Have never witnessed anything like it since, mental doesn't cover it. I was front frow of Archers Block 5, huge surge behind me (not that you could really get that with 10 rows of seats lol), noisier than a Metallica gig, random people hugging each other and leaping around like little kids on too much jelly and ice cream. Emotions ranging from sheer relief to grown men with tears in their eyes. Hollywood wouldn't have written it better. To be honest its a bit of a blur, if you could bottle the energy released you could power the national grid for a week. Better than sex with Lucy Pinder But for me what sums up the man is last weekend. Given all that went on with Pinnacle it took balls to walk along the touchline with his head held high. He could well have been bricking it but it must have meant a lot to him to hear the reception he got from us lot. He is one of us and always will be, end of.
  10. Javi de Pedro?
  11. Moral of the story is check your ******** regularly and don't be embarrased to go to the docs, the absolute worst they are going to do to you is stick their finger up your arse. Small indignity to endure in order to not die...
  12. Used to work in Reading and he is seen as a bit of a legend there - similar to Franny Benali for us I suppose - workhorse who will always give his all whilst not necessarily being that good (sorry Franny! Although I've never forgiven you for that hat-trick you scored against Weston Park in '84!)
  13. What you forget about MLT is his celebrations, always quality Also overlooked is just how bloody good the last goal at the Dell was, the ball was almost behind him when he hit it, amazing shape on the ball as the famous photo shows. For me though the best Saints goal is the Liverpool one at the start of the thread, its the best team goal I've ever seen. MLT's juggling act against Newcastle is a close second, with Moran against the skates, purely because of what it meant.
  14. Got mine at lunchtime yesterday. Back on the Northam after two years absence after going up there for the last few games of last season and loving it all over again. Back row of 42, plenty of standing and drumming for me then Jesus Christ though some people like to moan though - moaning about the Chapel and the length of the queue and the prices and whether or not they'd get a free Ajax ticket. FFS people yesterday was the day we could have died as a club, instead it was the start of a new book let alone a new chapter.
  15. Can you only buy online if you are renewing? Can't seem to find the option to buy a new ST (gave mine up last year)
  16. Seconded. He acted with the utmost integrity and deserved better. But football is a ruthless business sometimes, I hope we have paid him off adequately, although I doubt the money will compensate for the loss of the challenge I'm sure he was looking forward to...

  18. 3-0 comback against Liverpool with Marian jumping in the Archers to celebrate 3-2 against Arsenal, I remember nothing from Matty scoring to everyone being on the pitch, just magical Also remember a really niggly game against Leeds, depths of winter, Smith and Bowyer were their usual gobby selves and the atmosphere between the fans was cracking as a result. One of those games where outdoing the away fans was more important than the result (I have no idea whether we won or lost).
  19. Because they're a bunch of self-important egotistical ******s?
  20. By the bus-stop on the corner of Landseer Rd & Butts Rd when some random bloke shouted "we've signed kevin keegan" from his car. We didn't believe him, but being 9 years old in a way it was like "so what, we're the best team in the country, why wouldn't he want to play for us?" As to the offside volley it was Armstrong who was offside, for those who haven't seen it it was similar to Van Basten's in Euro '88 or Beatts against Leicester. Wonder if its on Youtube? Recently stayed at the Potters Heron, renovated now but the rooms are the same. Not sure the missus understood quite why I was so keen to stay there
  21. When he retired Matty said he didn't want it retired...
  22. Well he was Le God already and I'm not sure there is a vacancy above that title :-) Thankyou Matt, for everything. Your contribution to this club rivals that of Ted Bates and I for one hope you're here for another 50 years, just like he was...
  23. My first memory of Saints was May 1st 1976, being 5 I didn't really understand what the fuss was about but didn't mind because the celebration BBQ had much more coke, jelly, and ice cream than usual, primarily because my old man had had a flutter on us winning. I really got into Saints in the promotion season 77/78 - I remember quite clearly sat in the hospital with my grandad listening to us play Hull (think it was a draw). I got caught up in the run to the League Cup Final in '79, tucked up in bed listening to the semi against Leeds and getting half told off for cheering when the final whistle went but from then on I was hooked. That same transistor radio brought me the news that we'd signed Keegan and I ran home from school shouting at everyone in the street about it, think most didn't believe me but then I'm not sure I did. This being the 80s I was never allowed to go to The Dell in the glory years and I look back with regret at that, regret at taking those years for granted and thinking it would always be that way. Leaving school and heading off to college I got dragged away from the footie, no mates of mine were interested in it and I got more into music, beer, and cars. It wasn't until I came back from Uni that I started going regularly to The Dell, usually standing in Block 5 of the Archers. So many games stand out, some good and some bad. Above all though the comeback from 3-0 against Liverpool with Marian jumping in the crowd right in front of me and of course the completely expected miracle from Le God in the final game. We were a unit back then, happy with our lot and playing (and watching) for the love of the game and little else other than the hope of embarrassing one of the big teams, seeing a stunner from Matty or Marian, or perhaps a decent Cup run. Did we get too big for our boots with the move to St Mary's? I think we lost a little of the soul of the club with the move to yet another identikit 30,000 seater stadium. But I wouldn't change it (although The Dell would be a fortress next year). Those early years were great - Beatts and Pahars in their prime and a decent attacking side. Took us a while to settle in both fans and players and for the Northam to find its feet and its voice but then came the Cup run. Went to every match, with the Wolves 1/4 really standing out, St Marys felt like The Dell. I was honoured to follow my team to Cardiff and I felt I was there for all the members of my family who couldn't be, particularly my late grandfather. Saints had been our common interest and the thing we would talk about the most, they bound us together. Whilst the result didn't go our way we as fans were exemplary and I know its that spirit that will carry us forward in a new era. The highpoint although we didn't know it then was the European Tour, seeing Saints in Bucharest was unforgettable, as was the stadium and the Romanian girls (even the ones in riot gear). And then it all fell apart, I got involved (as part of the lunatic fringe) in the Lowe Out campaign and got absolutely wasted that Friday evening when we found out we'd got rid of him, unfortunately not for good. Looking back I think so many lost sight of the football in those years, I know I did. I grew up a bit and football someone seemed less important. As my love for Saints diminished my love for my now partner grew and I started to go to less and less matches. I gave up my season ticket on the Northam, and this last season only went to Claus' testimonial and the last three home matches. Found a new home at the back of the Northam and the feeling started coming back. Can't wait until the new season and the news about the investor today has lifted a dark cloud. I can't help thinking that League One is going to be a return to real football, a chance to rebuild our relationship, for me to apologise for letting my team down, and for them to have a new beginning. I'm over the moon that I'm going to have a team to take my kids to, and my grandkids. I don't honestly care whether thats in the Prem, if we never win anything, as long as they have the Spirit of Southampton...
  24. Provoked by the police to a certain extent, there was no sign of a pitch invasion until they marched out with the dogs. As soon as that happened there was a huge chorus of "on the pitch" and the back rows of the Kingsland and Northam emptied. No excuse for having a go at teh Burnley fans but completely expected of course. Hope the bloke being tended to by paramedics was OK - large chap in a blue and white striped polo, wasn't moving but there didn't seem to be much urgency so hopefully OK...
  25. Arizona, the police were solely responsible for deciding that Liverpool got the Leppings Lane, the reason being that geographically it made sense as it was nearest the trans-pennine routes. They were given the same end the previous year for the same reason. There are two reasons why the campaign continues: 1. Duckenfield (the policeman in control) avoided disciplinary action by taking early retirement on medical grounds with a full pension, something that has happened time and time again in cases of police misconduct. 2. The inquest cut off all evidence at 3.15, claiming that all victims were dead by then. The families claim that people were alive after this time, and died due to the actions of the police in not letting sufficient numbers of paramedics/ambulances on to the pitch. Independent police and medical staff witnesses initially backed this up but changed their testimony, allegedly under pressure from West Midlands police who were leading the investigation into police actions.
