You don't need 5 first team centre backs if you play 4-2-3-1. van Dijk Yoshida Stephens Benarek Is enough, if we signed another it bloats the squad too much. Stephens isn't particularly young any more, he turns 24 years old during the season. If van Dijk stays I think we'll start with van DIjk & Yoshida as first choice and Stephens will become van Dijk's partner as the season progresses. If the club view Stephens as being 1st choice material and he has shown signs he can be. Then I very much doubt they'll want to block the path of someone who will be 24 during this season with another player.

I very much doubt that story is true. Indications are that Pellegrino will play 4-2-3-1 next season. We have... Gabbiadini Austin Long Gallagher ...fighting for 1 position in the team. We don't need 5 players for 1 role. Some may say "sell Long he doesn't score enough", but it is hard to see Gabbiadini & Austin being 1st & 2nd choice, so we'll find it hard to upgrade on Long as a 3rd choice. Saints also will be unlikely to close the pathway for Gallagher by signing a 29 year old like Wagner.

I think the club should have moved beyond developing young players for other clubs. Just blocks the route for our own players and gives us little long term benefit.

So what? Why put 3pm Saturday kickoffs on such a platform? Tradition isn't a good reason. "Traditions" change. Before floodlights from the 1800s to the 1950s they didn't kickoff at 3pm on Saturdays in the winter as it was too dark. They kicked off earlier than 3pm on Saturdays so they had enough daylight by the time of the final whistle.

So are you suggesting we sell Yoshida then? Because we won't need 5 first team centre backs. If the club keep van Dijk, I think we'll start the season with van Dijk & Yoshida first choice, but over the season it will become van Dijk & Stephens. Stephens isn't that young anymore, he turns 24 years old midway through the season and if the club see him as a long term starter he needs to be starting games very soon.
