Comment from Xavi: Paul Scholes receives special praise: ‘In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. ‘He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.’ Zinedine Zidane on Scholes: 'It's only natural to want to select your best players and there is no doubt for me that Paul Scholes is still in a class of his own,' the former Real Madrid and Juventus midfielder told The Mirror. 'He's almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play. 'You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get. 'One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.' No offence keithd but I will trust mine, Xavi and Zinedine Zidane's judgement ahead of yours. For me, the best player England has produced in my life time.

I'd imagine a fair few of them would have been Scousers however. Nuking Anfield would have got rid of a lot of the Liverpool fans responsible.

He's a football players player. Zidane rated him as best he ever played against. He invented the "Xavi" role but probably had an even better range of passing across longer distances. His touch was impeccable, he never lost possession, I really could go on. Probably the most under-valued England player in the last 20 years. The team should have been built around him, but he either didnt play or was shunted out to the left wing. An absolute joke.

The difference between him and Scholes is that Scholes produced it at the very highest level for well over a decade and is guilty of a few nasty tackles. Rooney on the other hand can only turn it on against the likes of West Ham and Blackburn, sleeps with prostitutes despite having a decent enough wife and mother to his kids and gets booked/sent off for dissent. Lest we not forget he miraculously escaped censure for that forearm smash. Cant remember who it was against (Blackburn maybe?). If I did that to someone on the street it would be GBH. Wayne Rooney is not fit to lick the boots of Paul Scholes. Even now, at the start of the season before he gets burn out Paul Scholes is Man Utd's best player.

My mate owns a catering company and has agreed to do a job at some massive house is Roehampton and I said I'd give him a hand for £100 cash. It is no doubt going to be spent pandering to the whims of a bunch of royal loving, hoity-toity, what-ho idiots but I fully intend on getting ******ed up and eating just as many of the organic lamb burgers with garlic and rosemary focaccias as I plan on serving.

I'd go back to 1985 and nuke Anfield so the Liverpool fans couldnt get English clubs banned from European competition. This would have meant Saints could compete in Europe when we finished runners up. That was a time when smaller clubs really could compete. Would have been interested to see how we could have progressed had we been able to offer European football to players we were looking to sign.

Fonte: Chamberlain should stay, for now.

What I meant was guaranteed payments. None of this "we'll give you an extra £2m if he plays 20 times for England before he's 21" or "We'll give you £1m if he scores 20 goals in his first 2 seasons etc..." It should be £10m, £2.5m now, £2.5m next season and £5m the season after, guaranteed. Not a deal that is incentivised and we are left without a player, reliant on him to fulfil his potential for us to get a fair deal. If you want our player, stump the money up. -

Again, what you are saying makes sense but it very rarely is actually the case. Leeds were improving considerably when Fabien Delph broke through and left at the first opportunity to go to Villa where he currently doesnt get a look in. -
Fantastic news if the club has started expanded the scouting network at youth level globally again. Can only bode well for the future.

It's great news for the lads. I thought this news would be coming out soon because my nephew was given a new two year contract with the academy last week so it must be renewal time. Congratulations to all who were kept on.

A few people have had this debate with MLG. I admire his optimism but it simply wont happen. He will be gone and in my opinion I think he'd be mad to go to Arsenal instead of Man Utd. He will get a quality education at Man Utd but also the realistic chance of some first team football to aid his development. At Arsenal he will be stick behind Nasri, Wilshere, Ramsay, Diaby and Song in the centre and Walcott and Arshavin on the right. If the money we have now puts us in a position where we can tell clubs to put up or shut up, then I say we should sell him. Next season is going to be of monumental importance to the club and money will need to be spent on a few positions. If we could get c.£10m straight up for AOC and put that straight back in to the first team it would put us in a very strong position to win promotion at the first time of asking. That said, if clubs offer us incentivised deals like the Walcott and Bale transfers I would tell them to poke it. I am guessing this is the real reason Cortese rejected any offers that were made. -
Butterfield has more experience, I would stick with him. We need wise heads right now. Although we are blessed with a couple of decent right backs with good experience. As we are left backs.

Never mind the shirt ... what about the badge?
sambosa75 replied to Saint 76er's topic in The Saints
I definitely think the club should be considering update the badge. I am usually a big fan of hanging on to things like this as its part of the clubs heritage but lets face it, its a bit naff and could definitely do with an update. I too would lose the scarf, we know Southampton play in red and white, the football (the FC bit in our name gives away the fact we are a football club). I think the halo is worth keeping. We are the Saints after all. -
From what I have seen and heard of him he is the kind of player that makes things happen. He might not be the most clinical finisher in the squad but whenever he plays he gets chances and that cant just purely by coincidence. You have to be a good player to get in to those types of positions in the first place and he does this on a regular basis. Frustrating at times maybe, but bad? Certainly not.

the ones that got away..or left of their own accord

Probably worth also pointing out that at the time Drogba wasnt exactly "hot property". He had a very average goals to game ratio in an inferior league to the one we were in at the time. As for Adebayor, he was absolute pony in his first couple of years at Arsenal. A total headless chicken but became a better player due to the players around him. I dont think he would have improved at such a rate had he signed for Saints. Saha and Malbranque would have been great signings but as someone else said, when did we ever spend £6m on one player, let alone £12m for two. -
Yeah I thought Khan was comfortable outpointing and outworking McCloskey but his attacks didnt seem to be causing McCloskey too much trouble whereas the few times McCloskey landed with anything solid it did seem to rattle Khan. There is no doubt Amir has improved considerably under Freddie Roach and through sparring with Pacquiao but that chin of his is still very, very vulnerable and against a more seasoned fighter who is capable of banging and defending themselves he will come up short.

Get in there Guly. Most important goal of the season?

Saints v Bristol Rovesr,1st half & half time chat...
sambosa75 replied to saint lard's topic in The Saints
Come on Saints. Lets have a comfortable win today. I'm far too hungover to deal with the stress of a close match. -
I'm not so sure. Brighton are now a team playing without pressure. It can go two ways either they roll over against a side who are still doggedly fighting to join them in promotion or they spray the ball around, pass us off the park and hammer us. I've not done the maths but there is a chance that if they win against us it would confirm that they have won the league which is an extra motivation in itself. Also there is the fact the Brighton fans, players and coaching staff all seem to have a massive chip on their shoulders about us and would love nothing more than to put a dent in our promotion hopes. I really dont think it will be as easy as "they are already promoted so wont try hard against us." I think your dreaming if this is what you believe.

Just had another go at the predictor, here is what I predicted: Saints remaining fixtures: Bristol Rovers H 3-1 Win Brighton A 1-2 Loss Hartlepool H 2-0 Win Brentford A 1-1 Draw Plymouth A 2-0 Win Walsall H 1-1 Draw Saints to get 11 more points from remaining fixtures Huddersfield remaining fixtures: Charlton A 2-1 Win MK Dons A 1-1 Draw Dag & Red H 2-0 Win Brighton A 1-2 Loss Brentford H 2-0 Win Hudds to get 10 more points from remaining fixtures Peterborough remaining fixtures: Plymouth H 2-1 Win Leyton Orient A 0-1 Loss Yeovil H 3-1 Win Rochdale A 1-1 Draw Dag & Red H 1-0 Win Peterborough to get 10 more points from remaining games. League table to finish as: 1. Brighton - 105 points 2. SAINTS - 85 Points 3. Huddersfield - 84 Points 4. Peterborough - 81 Points 5. MK Dons - 81 Points 6. Bompey - 74 Points Admittedly my predictions are pretty pessimistic. I really would expect wins against Brentford and Walsall but think with Walsall in particular we'll let the occasion get the better of us and they'll be scrapping to stay up. I just cant see further than Saints getting promoted. If only it was this easy though.
