Adjusting your driving to become more fuel efficient

Adjusting your driving to become more fuel efficient
so22saint replied to dune's topic in The Lounge
Engine revs is just the speed of the flywheel (and by association the cylinders). However, if you're out of gear the engine has to inject fuel to keep the cylinders moving. If you coast in gear, the momentum of the car will keep pushing it forward, turning the wheels, which will turn the gearbox and therefore engine over. If you leave it in gear and take your foot off the accelerator therefore, a modern engine (one with an electronic box of tricks) will introduce no more fuel into the engine. So leave it in gear -

that move that led to Hammond's shot would have been a great goal. Possession, midfield movement, movement up front. lovely still 0-0 of course... -
Could he be Neil Maddison to the Ox's Alan Shearer?

In the meantime chaps have you tried memcached? Also, I've noticed that the avatar images are served every time somebody hits the page, and served from a php page as well which might be an issue, you might want to utilise browser caching to minimise this - something like: ExpiresActive On ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 3 hours" ExpiresByType image/jpg "access plus 3 hours" ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 3 hours" ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 3 hours" ExpiresByType application/x-javascript "access plus 8 hours" ExpiresByType application/javascript "access plus 8 hours" ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 8 hours" ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 8 hours" in whichever conf file you have might help. I say might as the fact that images are coming from image.php worries me, but as the browser will have cached it I would have thought it would work. It would mean that people changing their avatars might not see it for 8 hours - boo hoo? You *might* want to turn off mod_deflate if your server is CPU bound . Do you have any server monitoring installed like "xymon". That could help identify the issue (CPU / IO etc.) - it's proved invaluable in the past to me. Anyway, just trying to be constructive

same here - we're up to 30 people, and I hate it. onwards and upwards, where's the prozac

I'm also convinced I've seen this bird (or it's bredderin) while driving down the A34 from Newbury to Winch - my mum said she saw an Eagle (and she's a birder) over the water off Redbridge as well.

I agree. All political parties make no difference to this. The left have abandoned redistribution of wealth, and the right have abandoned social mobility through opportunity (only offering tax breaks and govmnt work to big companies). They're all about maintaining the status quo of 12-20 years in government on massive salaries making friends in the large corporations, then board level positions and after dinner speaking. and they all did bloody politics degrees at oxford or cambridge. Stuck up ****ers

I'm old enough to remember when United fans wanted Ferguson out every season until they won the FA Cup. "Only good for Aberdeen" "This job is too big for him". They'd had a tonne of mediocre managers up to then as well. Maybe we should get another manager then - changing manager every year worked so well under the duck hunting idiot. That's why we're in the Champions League... oh look we're not. How about a bit of support for our team / manager / club. ****s

Britain moves a step closer to a corporate dictatorship

I voted Tory, I'll admit it, to get rid of the last bunch of shysters. But I'll also admit I'm not posh (I'm from Totton FFS) and never been a member of the Bullingdon club or whatever. I suppose I support a centrist, libertarian viewpoint of we're not all equal, you only get out what you put in, minimum state interference but ultimately trying to improve the conditions of everybody through hard work. This bunch of ******s though are just interested in protecting their own interests and the interests of their ****y mates. I run a small business (£4m turnover), how the hell am I meant to grow it if my larger competitors with economies of scale are given preferential treatment. arseholes. -
Can't be arsed to read all 8 pages of this pro/anti ****e. To be honest, I think both sides are behaving like bloody children. What I do know is that my mum has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and might have as little as 3 months left on this ****hole we call earth and is going to the 125th meal and it would have been nice for her to see the current crop as well as some of the legends, but now she won't. grow up you little t w a t s

I don't really care who owns the club to be honest, as long as we're not in financial difficulties and making our way up the table - not selling all our best players and changing the manager evry 6 months. All that aside, there's every chance this is utter BS - good blog post on the Fail's excellent standards: http://nosleeptilbrooklands.blogspot.com/2011/01/true-story-of-daily-mail-lies-guest.html

Top Gear presenters in legal firing line over anti-Mexican comments

Saw Steve Hughes last year in Bompey supporting Reg D Hunter - both sets were brilliant and said more about the pathetic "you can't say anything" nature of TV and life in general than anything discussed on Radio 4 or whatever. Reginald D Hunters take on it was excellent - he riffs on being called up to be an "arbiter of racism": "I'm not an expert, just because I'm black doesn't mean I know if something is, or isn't racist". He then discusses a conversation he had with a lady at the BBC which was superb but I won't post it here as it'll just kick off more ****e. His main point was that there are different degrees to this, and seeing stuff written down is not the same as seeing it taking place; that all cultures take the mickey out of each other but as long as it's not done with real hate or ignorance (and if you "believe" that all people from one place are the same then basically you're thick and probably from Pompey (do you see what I did there)), then it shouldn't be made a big deal of". I think Top Gear are most of the time operating in **** take mode, sometimes I wince at it, most of the time it's just funny. Reginald D Hunters best joke for me by the way is: "I love this country it's the only place in the world where a good friend is introduced 'This is my best mate Nigel, he's a bit of a ****'" :-) -
I had one of my birthday parties in Huckleberrys - I'm sure it was downstairs. feeling old.

One of those footballers who probably will do well the higher level he plays. Reckon he'll do ok for Blackpool. Amused at Beattie and Brett again.
