Adkins: "There is scope to dip into the loan market"
Whitey Grandad replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
Me neither, but I shall keep on looking. -
The last game of the season is Saturday, 7th May (against Walsall ) and the final is on May 29th so following the usual pattern the first leg would be Saturday 14th May and the second would be either Tuesday 17th or Wednesday 18th depending on the telly. Those are my best guesses. I'm already getting depressed at the thought of it all, but I shan't show it.

Question for the Positive-Thinkers after the Walsall result
Whitey Grandad replied to alpine_saint's topic in The Saints
One or two unlucky losses against a team who manage to fluke a goal are to be expected over the course of a season. We seem to be having too many of this type of game for my liking. We are not ruthless or single-minded enough. -
Fair point. Has anybody ever done a full cost/benefit analysis on the Acagemy over, say, the last twenty years?

I have my own business and am self-employed and I also have three full-timers working for me, and yet I am getting to feel like that every morning. I've lost too much in the recession to even think of stopping at the moment. My words to my wife as I leave home in the morning are 'here I go again'.

Something just not right at the moment
Whitey Grandad replied to Fitzhugh Fella's topic in The Saints
Sadly, I have to agree with you. -
Have you got your tickets yet? I'm still waiting for mine. The chap who sits next to me bought his last October and he's still waiting...

It's 2 yards narrow under Adkins so there's less grass to mow.
-
Never mind the bickering, what did you all think of the result? I must admit, I was a little bit concerned when they equalised. You could see it coming. The last fifteen minutes of the first half we had lost all sense of purpose and I was afraid that our usual lack of a clinical finish would comeback to haunt us.

RIP Deano, gone after only half a lifetime and with so much to offer. You will be in our thoughts and my condolences to your family.
-
You get used to it.
-
Yep yep. Collect your ticket on the way in and then put the same ticket in on the way out. I don't know what happens if you're over the 30 minutes.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer it in its natural containers, myself.

The difference between Southampton and Brighton...
Whitey Grandad replied to Dibden Purlieu Saint's topic in The Saints
Nutshell. (Am I allowed to say that?) -
That can also be a slow word. 'Celerity' might have been more appropriate. Nice of him to try, though.

One could say, The difference between Southampton and Brighton is that we drew at Hartlepool and they lost.... -

It's the table in May that matters, but it's certainly Brighton's championship to lose and I still think they'll hit a sticky patch sometime. -
Check the small print - I had something similar offered to my business recently. The rental is about half price but only for 2 years, you have to sign up for longer and if you cancel before there are hefty charges. They will try and get you to sign up over the phone and get very shirty if you say you need time to think.

Putting the local government job "cuts" into perspective
Whitey Grandad replied to trousers's topic in The Lounge
What figures are these? I have seen £1.6bn in 2008, which is a pitiful return on the capital invested. Some divisions have made losses, some such as their capital investment arm have continued to give good returns. £6bn of the quoted £11bn was from the sale of BGI to Blackrock. If the company is allowed by the government to offset write-downs against tax then these companies will do so. Headline figures are always misleading. -

I assume your tongue was in your cheek when you typed that? -

The profits are reduced because they are allowed to offset against losses from previous years. This has been the arrangement under several governments. Individuals and sole traders like me are not allowed to spread good years over the bad ones. -

That's different, and on the face of it, 'highly dodgy', IMHO. No, all the banks are going to be paying very little corporation tax because of the hits that they have taken. -

It's only 1% because of the horrendous losses in the previous years.
