  1. Once again we see the simplistic nature of these studies which are only interested in total solar irradiation. The 'solar activity' to which I have previously referred is the high-energy particles which together with cosmic radiation have an observed effect on our climate. The research at CERN is part of a programme attempting to determine the mechanisms by which this could occur. At present, because no known mechanism has been identified it can, of course, not be included in any climate model. If you have the time it is worth sitting through at least the first part of the lecture given by Kirkby at CERN. I have posted the link above.
  2. Why do these quizzes only come out at Christmas time?
  3. I rest my case.
  4. Oh dear.
  5. Don't be such a tit. You are above this.
  6. As I said, you have absolutely no idea what the term 'Engineer' means, which would tend to invalidate every other one of your comments.
  7. And more from the same: http://howcanpeoplebesostupid.com/?p=1647 As for CERN, it appears that they are still working on the experiment: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1221088
  8. You very obviously do not understand what a Chartered Engineer is. We are several levels above 'scientists'.
  9. That's what we were told at the time. There was not a mention of global warming. I'm sure I would have noticed.
  10. And there's more (Jasper Kirkby again, I wonder how he's getting on?) http://www.thepeoplesvoice.org/TPV3/Voices.php/2008/12/07/theory-says-climate-change-depends-on-so
  11. The story begins.... http://www.economist.com/node/8074812?story_id=8074812
  12. I'll try and dig it out for you. I should have some free time over the weekend, there's nothing on the tele.
  13. Then you know nothing.
  14. Are you saying that an Engineer is not a scientist???
  15. Some of us go back over 20 years before that. In the 1960's the next Ice Age was the big concern amongst the scientific community.
  16. No, not at all, but these analyses are more recent that the early 'scare-mongering' reports.
  17. As a Chartered Engineer with two degrees I feel that I have a working knowledge of may aspects that have been discussed here, certainly enough for me to comment on the validity of many of the scientific theories that have been proposed. What might your scientific qualifications be?
  18. You would hope so, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
  19. I suppose it could happen in theory but I believe that to be extremely unlikely. As always, it is the great unwashed who will pay.
  20. Much of this science is very simplistic. For example, for many years climate scientists ignored the effects of clouds because they did not know how to model them. Also, when they talk about 'solar activity' they only look at total solar irradiation and completely overlook the effects of high-energy particle streams which have a significant effect on cloud formation.
  21. The lead is still in the glass, it's just separated from the other materials. There's not much you can do with it after that, except perhaps mix it in road surfaces. Having said that, it's fairly stable in the glass and probably won't hurt anybody.
  22. It is like the whole debate: very confused. And to agree... there is no known techonology to remove lead from the glass in old CRTs, although locking it up in glass is probably the safest way to dispose of it.
  23. I like it.
  24. If it's Boxing Day (not for you, Trousers) then there will be no mainline trains. I believe that the Tube trains will be running.
  25. Phew, just think how cold it would be were it not for Global Warming! And in the interests of 'balance': http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1335798/Global-warming-halted-Thats-happened-warmest-year-record.html#ixzz17RkN9TLU It's in the Mail so it must be true, eh?
