This is a common misunderstanding. The whole of the ball has to be over the whole of the line and from some angles there can be a gap between the line and the ball but when looked at from above there is still a part of the ball that is over the line. The official is in the best position to judge and is a neutral opinion. You couldn't ask for any more.

Well he held the flag horizontally which just means someone in the middle was offside but he was standing quite a way back from the goal-line, almost level with the penalty spot, if my memory serves me correctly.

Check your aerial feeds. Can you get other stations? They normally use the rear heater element as an aerial an there's sometimes an amplifier in the boot lid with a large ferrite inductor. After repeated lid slammings this can come away from the board thus losing the signal.
