Top 50p tax rate damages UK, say economists
Whitey Grandad replied to Johnny Bognor's topic in The Lounge
High taxes stifle investment and entrepreneurs. f you fine people enough they will stop doing it. -
I remember it well. It was a very important day. It was our ruby wedding anniversary and we had an evening meal on the beach in Bermuda. Did anything else happen?
-
We are there for a couple of days in two weeks' time so suggestions please.

The logical explanation is that there is a ghost, or more probably a poltergeist.

There is much that we cannot explain. Let's not ridicule someone who clearly feels threatened by events beyond their understanding.

I've never forgiven Prutton for missing that goal at West Bromwich.

Our Jason running? Surely not?

Scratching and heavy breathing? That sounds like me. Seriously though, if you do call in an exorcist make sure that you pay them or you might be repossessed.

I noticed that they didn't include any cheques in the letter.

Advice on the laws of the game from Match officials
Whitey Grandad replied to spyinthesky's topic in The Lounge
It used to be 'about 6 seconds' but now it's specified as '6 seconds'. Offside interpretation: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/worldfootball/clubfootball/01/37/04/27/interpretation%5flaw11%5fen.pdf -
International Breaks - Like them or hate them?
Whitey Grandad replied to St Marco's topic in The Saints
I hate them. England have never played well since they abandoned midweek internationals and introduced these mid-season breaks. The longer the manager has with the players the worse they play. -
Oh well, can't win 'em all.

Bugger that. I can't go if it's Sunday. -
It may be that Jobs has been holding the company back with his strange predilections and prejudices.

The two are not mutually exclusive. I expect most would have liked to have won the FA Cup and also not been relegated. Playing a weaker side in the Cup would not necessarily have meant not being relegated.

Do any of them use real beef dripping?

I would do the same myself if only I had the time.

Saints V Millwall 1- 0 Post match chat!
Whitey Grandad replied to SOTONS EAST SIDE's topic in The Saints
Yes, what was all that about? The guy with the bottle was on the wireless intercom a couple of times. There were plenty of other bottles alog the touchline. -
The wording in the Laws is 'trip or attempt to trip' so there does not have to be contact for it to be a foul.

Spacecraft Sees Solar Storm Engulf Earth
Whitey Grandad replied to Saint in Paradise's topic in The Lounge
That's me! Engineers (the real ones, not boiler repair men) are practical scientists. They have to both comprehend and apply the science. Theoretical scientists spend all their time trying to get funding for their pet theories and projects and very often fail to see the bigger picture. Some of them do some useful stuff but before you get too excited about their research you should always look to see who's funding it. (My original comment didn't say 'better', I said that engineers were way ahead of scientists, or was it 'beyond'?) -
Spacecraft Sees Solar Storm Engulf Earth
Whitey Grandad replied to Saint in Paradise's topic in The Lounge
The only 'debunking' I saw related to the total energy output from the sun and not to any possible effect of high-energy rays on cloud formation. As I said, there is no science for this at present so it is not included in any climate models. -
Spacecraft Sees Solar Storm Engulf Earth
Whitey Grandad replied to Saint in Paradise's topic in The Lounge
There is a definite and unavoidable correlation between sunspot activity and the earth's climate. The solar activity to which you refer is total energy output which is, quite frankly, an unbelievably simplistic approach to the interaction between events on the sun and what happens here. If you examine the relationship between mean distance between the earth and the sun you will find a strong relationship with the occurrence of ice ages. The only warming effects on earth come from the sun. To pretend that what happens on the sun does not affect our climate (and weather) is preposterous. -
Why would you want to rein in expectations???
