Saints vs Manchester Utd - 4th Round FA Cup Draw
Barry the Badger replied to saint_bert's topic in The Saints
I don't get all this plastics stuff. Surely we just have a number of fans who do 5-15 games per season, it's just they all come to this one. I don't think it's really people who never come. -
I want home v brighton

He's not even making a tackle, that's just how Pulis runs.
-
I'm still somewhat shocked we managed to sign somebody of Fonte's quality.

A Liverpool supporting mate forwarded this to me... I thought the graphical comparison of Reina's passing this season v last was pretty interesting. http://tomkinstimes.com/2010/12/its-getting-ugly-hodgson%e2%80%99s-way/

He's already cup tied.

Excuse me Mr Kaka but would you mind awfully waiting until after our game against Blackpool before signing as we don't want to upset anybody "in the risk zone". Don't agree. If a deal is to be done they will complete it and announce it, not fanny around trying not to upset anybody.

both managers' after match comments

But last season I was targetting the play offs, we got close by Christmas then failed to ever get any closer. That's what I'm referring to, last year we never quite seemed to get over the line into the play off places, it almost feels like this season is shaping up the same way with the auto places, every time we get close we seem to miss an opportunity. -

It is hard to judge though isn't it. On the one hand, I agree with you that after the bad start we are doing ok overall and hopefully will close the gap. On the other hand, I spent Christmas onwards last season saying exactly that and we never made it. It feels very much like last season in that we have done the work to get away from the bottom of the table and up to a challenging position, but every time we get an opportunity to get closer we fail to take it. There has to come a point at which you say "right, forget about the bad start, we've been up near the playoffs for long enough now, we should be making some headway into the top 2" -

We were poor, as poor as we've been for some time, BUT.... Their keeper pulled off at least 2 excellent saves, we hit the woodwork etc etc. We had more possesion, more shots, more corners. They capitalised on two defensive errors but overall it was definitely not an easy win. -

Do you know anything about management? His team have just won at St. Mary's. What is more likely to keep the feelgood factor going? Is it a) We were lucky to win, their keeper made a howler and we got away with a few.... Or b) that was easy. My point is, you're putting far too much stock in what a manager is saying, when surely anybody who was there can see that although we were poor, it was by no means an easy win for Brentford and they were still fairly fortunate. -
For the Cheltenham game I phoned on the first morning and took the £3 hit to make sure I got my seat. Got to the stadium on the day and there was nobody in any of the seats around us so we ended up moving over into block 42 where the crowd was anyway. Hopefully will be busier for Blackpool though.

It won't be at Wembley

He didn't miss an open goal, you are exaggerating.
-
Jaidi was immense in the air last night. His distribution still falls short but he is what he is.
-
Lol someone worse at open goals than BWP was for us

I agree with this. I think Fonte is class but he does try to cover too much. I can't remember who it was against but there was a two on two situation earlier in the season, as they broke at us, Aaron Martin was closest to the ball and gestured to Fonte that he had it covered, he was pointing Fonte to cover the spare man. Instead Fonte went rushing over and the ball ended up with the spare man, pretty sure they scored. Now it was just a case of Fonte not trusting Martin and wanting to help, which is somewhat understandable given Martin's inexperience. But Fonte does need to keep his discipline and not act as though he's the only defender sometimes.

It does seem as though international tournament football is better able to cope with no segregation than club football.

Fair enough, have to admit I was not a season ticket holder back then, and at that time lived away from Southampton, so perhaps my view of that period is not as accurate as it could be. I always got the impression he was a monster free kick taker but I am happy to stand corrected.
-
In half a season. Point was simply that Bale was the best free kick taker we've had since MLT, not Lambert in my opinion. Re the main point, I don't think we were ever a one man team last season in terms of goals, but we did rely heavily on Lambert for the way we played. This season we are having to adapt due to his comparitively poor form, and I feel as though that process is still ongoing.
