Sort of. The judge will recommend they serve a minimum amount of time, say 15 years before they can apply for parole. When they are released on parole they still have to report to probation and be supervised, adhere to conditions and so on for a sett period of time and even after that if there is suspicion they have broken releas conditions or reoffended they can be recalled to prison without notice. the "life" element to the sentance is life under supervision, that is not nessasarily in prison. In serve cases though a judge can order someone to die in prison.

That's half the problem, you get the impression everything they say these days has to be vetted by a marketing agency first and what they do say is toeing the party line, not their true beliefs.
