Still think he's a better option that Boufal, Redmond or Tadic. Certainly works harder than any of them. Be sad to see him go but if he's not going to get regular football then no point in keeping him.

Still think he's a better option that Tadic, Boufal, Redmond and Gallagher. I remember last season when we were struggling for goals and I said I'd like to see J-Rod and Long start instead of Redmond, Tadic / Boufal. May not have the flair but they certainly work harder and create more. I genuinely hope I'm wrong but I think he'll get more assists and score more goals and than any striker at Saints this season.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, they're all average players. I'd gladly see 4 of them replaced with 1 quality addition.

Obviously it's early days but first impressions are that it doesn't look like we've addressed any of the issues from last season. It's going to be a very long season.

Been saying we've got too many average players for months and got the usual abuse for it. This should be a wake up call. We're miles off the pace as things stand and need some quality investment.

On a slightly different note. Might be worth a few quid on Everton to finish above Liverpool. Also, I don't think Spurs will finish top 4.

And here lies the problem. I don't think anybody knows our strongest starting 11 because we have too many average and inconsistent players in some positions. Back 4 pretty much picks itself. Other than Romeu, the rest is just guess work.

Clasie, I'd completely forgotten about him. The thing for me is that we have some players who are straight on the team sheet. The back four pretty much picks itself, assuming VVD gets his act together. The issue is that the midfield doesn't. With the exception of Romeu, who do you play? Ask anybody on here who they'd play in the midfield and up front and you'll get hundreds of different answers. Why? because we don't have enough quality. We could get rid of 4 midfielders and be no worse off as a squad. We're carrying too many average players. What we need are 2 really special signings.

Really? We don't seem to know our strongest 11 and largely because of a bunch of average midfielders like, Boufal, Tadic, Long, Davis, Redmond, JWP, Targett and Gallagher. There isn't an outstanding player amongst them. They all put in a good show every once in a while but none of them are consistent. This just leads to the manager chopping and changing every week. If we're going to play 1 up front then these players need to score goals and none of them look great in that department. I'd get rid of Boufal, Tadic and Long and replace them with a proper No. 10. Targett, JWP and Redmond can fill the gaps as I think they're just as capable of doing what Boufal, Tadic and Long do.

I hope you're right, but you can't argue with Defoe's track record. He's a proven goal scorer at this level. As I said, if he gets 15-20 goals a season he's done a great job for them. For what it's worth, I'm sure Gabbi & Austin will have a positive effect on our younger players in the same way Defoe will for Bournemouth. I think he's a good signing for them. I wouldn't have been disappointed if he'd come to us, but I don't think we need him. All I'm saying is that I think they've made 2 good signings that are certainly better than the ones we've made... so far.

They've signed Ake and Begovic, both good signings. On top of that they've signed a proven striker who's performed at every club he's been at. Who cares about his age? If you get 2 seasons out of him and he gets 15 - 20 goals each season then that's great business. Add in the effect that a player like Defoe will have on the young strikers at the club and it's hard to see any issue with his signing.
