How we are going to score goals with two forwards who can score and three midfielder and five defenders who will only snatch something from a favourable free kick or corner? It was a classic case of parking the bus. If we are going to play seven defensive players then the other three really have to be capable of scoring something that escapes Davis and JWP. If we use that formation again maybe bench Pelle and play Mane and Rodriguez off Long. We made it far too easy for the Watford defence.

I thought the team selection was unbalanced but I can see that there may be underlying reasons for it. I suspect there was firstly a pragmatic rotation. Secondly the priority of giving Rodriguez and Targett game time. The team selection left us without blend in vital areas against a team that was able to play a very compact blocking game. There were several players who fell far short of the performance to fill the vital areas. Both full backs were poor for a team that sets such store in the full backs providing the width. Targett was a little better than Yoshida but too often checked out and passed back. His lack of pace is a worry. Neither full back were regularly available to receive balls to the wings from the DMs, this caused us to be narrow and slow with our build up. JWP was a nearly man, he nearly closed down, nearly tackled, wondered around in midfield, any possession was passed back or square. When he did have the ball he wanted to offload it as quickly as possible. For a so called future international he showed a total lack of drive or awareness. At this stage he should be demanding the ball and driving the team around him but he seemed just reactive and passive. Good job he fell over at the right time. The dead ball delivery was better than Saturday but a long way from the laser like accuracy that causes defenders sleepless nights, in a word pretty ordinary. Caulker is finding his feet and good in the air. The two DMs should settle down and provide a good defensive shield. Soares and Bertrand will solve the width problem although I'm surprised Martina hasn't figured even on the left because he has been fairly decent up to now. Clasie may well be able to to do the job JWP failed to do. Somebody earlier made the comment that a loan out might be in his best interests, to get a full season at a decent level. Up front my main criticism of Pelle is his lack of mobility and tendency to occupy the central area. The three main attackers play in straight lines apart from Rodriguez there is no lateral movement or interchange to try and move defenders around. They do however suffer from our slow narrow build up which pushes them up against the offside problem with defenders holding their ground in numbers. Somebody on both sides needs to get behind the defence and put in crosses from close to the bye line. Both Mane and Rodriguez want to be strikers so don't get into the wide areas early enough. I'm not sure that Midjtylland are that good and may well not be good enough now that we have had a good look at them.

Another way would be to go for a mobile front four. Long up front with Tadic, Mane and Rodriguez behind but I cant see RK going with that.

IMO playing the four attacking players without a mobile linking player in front of Romeu and Wanyama doesn't really work. There is not enough movement and Pelle occupying the centre without interchange is too predictable and makes us play in straight lines. The very limited Davis and JWP are not the answer unless they add ten goals a season from play and get into double figures in assists. Recirculating the ball to the back four just doesn't cut it. The answer for me is a better player providing goals and assists to link the four attackers. Maybe that is Koeman's plan for Clasie but he hasn't a history of filling that role but who is to say he can't. One thing we do know, Davis and JWP can't whilst we have bought Romeu to match up with Wanyama not sit on the bench. An after thought. I wonder if Jake Hesketh, if he breaks through, could be that sort of player

Maybe if we stopped him playing on the right and moved him to his natural side. But then the obsession of the moment is to play players wide on their less natural side. That will disappear in time too. We get nothing much off him on the right because he is so left footed.

What was different last year when we were up for corners, Clyne and Bertrand were covering, now it is Soares and Targett, neither blessed with pace. Also their starting positions were poor, Soares was in front of Lukaku with only Targett behind. It needed Soares behind Lukaku with Targett on the cover. Soares fouls Lukaku to stop him, then no problem as not the last defender. I also thought we should have kept VW back outside the area with Tadic.

His passing is so much better than Davis. It's not as if Davis is going to get goals. I can see us more 4-3-3 than 4-2-3-1 but either could work with Vic, Romeu and Clasie. I can't see us buying them not to start.

I get the feeling now we have the holding two sorted that he will be playing as the attacking midfielder with three up front.

. The team selection was poor. We were caught out last week with Newcastle playing around our midfield. This week the same midfield the same result, totally exposed back four. Romeu brought some balance to midfield but Davis as a forward when we were chasing goals didn't work. Romeu should have started with Wanyama in front of the back four. I can't help thinking that Martina is a safer bet than Targett. Everton were much more dynamic up front with their fastest players on the shoulders of the defenders and the midfielders breaking fast. We had the static Pelle up front seeming to be moaning the whole game maybe with some justification. Our quick players were too deep and neutered by our really slow build up which closes down the space available in the opponents defence. Our free kicks and corners floated in are dire. They need to be put in with pace. Chasing the game the substitutions didn't work for me. I thought Davis should have been swopped for Romeu although Tadic wasn't much of a threat. Then Rodriguez for Long, again I thought Davis. The really negative one was JWP for Davis, a case of no goals changed for no goals. We need to get the ball up to the forwards more quickly rather than the really slow build up and have our quick forwards getting at the opponents back four with space behind.
