French police stood and watched the Russians. They did absolutely nothing. All they were interested in was tear gassing and batton charging the English, 99% of which weren't really interested.

Marseille has been a disgusting place over the last 3 days, I won't be travelling back here in a hurry. Yes, we have a small minority of idiot supporters but about 300 tooled up Russians were not picking any of their victims particularly carefully. If anything, the French police were encouraging it by thinking it was a good idea to constantly tear gas normal fans stood in the sun pleasantly having a drink. The papers will focus on the 'core' images but the reality was much much worse as a lot of innocents got caught up in it.
