Look at the players at his disposal? McLeish and Smith both left for better paid jobs when they realised they had over achieved. Bit like Strachan with Saints. Past scots maanagers have had some great players and i'm old enough to remember them in the 70's when Scotland qualified for world cups while England failed to do so. i think even Fergie would struggle to get Scotland to a world cup at the moment. Well he's performed ok at championship level for a number of seasons which is a bit better than league 1.

He did well at Old Trafford when Cov won in the league cup not that long ago which proved he has the bottle and ability to play at a decent level.

Since making his debut in 2002 Holmes has played 120 league and cup games scoring 9 goals averaging about 13 games a season. I did not count the amount of injuries. I hope people are not pinning all our hopes this season on his return based on a couple of decent games early last season.
