I was thinking about that Ipswich game earlier when racking my brain about comebacks, although of course it was at The Dell. Weren’t we 3-0 down at one point in that match ? My recollection is that the crowd were incensed by Ipswich’s second or third goal as they played on whilst a Saints player was down injured. Then we scored before halftime, and that rallied the crowd (which was pretty good when it got going at The Dell in those days). Came out second half and went for it, Moran and Armstrong in fine form. Got a second and we all knew it was ‘on’. May have got some of that wrong*, as one thing I do ‘remember’ from the match was that (then in my younger years) I and my mate were quite pissed at the game. * perhaps it was the second goal just after HT that set the crowd up

So have a qualifying match, plus possibly a home and away semi-final (three more matches). Add a final at Wembley, and that’s a total of 50 matches to decide the last promotion place. No longer a league but the longest running cup competition out there.

the only player I directed abuse at was Archer. Stand by that. Absurd to start him, but Tonda got it right second half. Another three points he’s won us. Onwards and upwards.

Have been hoping things would fall into place for Tonda especially going to a back four, new GK, and a CF. But as much as I want him to succeed the selection of Archer is inexcusable.

Some fair points SOG raises re level of fitness and player’s roles. Disagree about full backs though, David Peach and Ivan Golac were often playing advanced positions. Wingers, yes, could be lazy fuckers. I know which era was generally more entertaining and exciting to watch though even if it is seen through sepia tinted specs with a dose of nostalgia thrown in.
