I didn’t say it had to be centre halves & midfielders only that I could think of a few who played in those positions who would have done so. If you believe there’s a culture where he’s challenged, then you’ve got more faith than I have. The fact they’re all pally pally & all seem to indicate they’re fully onboard the bus, makes me think differently.

In the past there wasn’t defensive midfielders or attacking midfielders, but midfielders. Souness defended & created, even Butch Wilkins who is probably the nearest thing to the modern ball recycling merchants we have nowadays , did both roles. Some were better going forward, some better defensively, but they did both roles. You talk about a 2. It’ll probably end up with a 2, being defensive full back & a 3 being an attacking full back. We’ll run out of numbers soon.

Surely some of the players need to challenge him. I can think of a few Centre halves or midfields that would have done in the past. His tactics are making them look like twats, so you’d hope they’d stand up and have their say. It’s healthy to have a culture where bosses are challenged & critiqued by the staff. Personally, I think Mannings a good footballer, but not in the role he’s performing, in the old days his abilities would be used in midfield, with a full back flying down the wing. Defensively, he’s not good enough. Fuck me 2 of the goals reminded me of my under 11 days, everyone going up front leaving some poor sap defending against 3. It’s entirely down to the coaching staff. I maybe old fashioned but even the dog & duck used to have a spare man. They leave 2 up, we have 3 back. Now it’s all 1 on 1 defending, which is ok if you’ve got Kyle Walker or VvD but not if it’s some of our weak as piss son in laws. I didn’t think Che Adams looked interested, was disappointed with Frazier, thought AA gave his all again (but isn’t great) and thought Edozie was having his best game for us (I hope to god it wasn’t a tactical decision to bin him at half time). Saves wise, Baz had a decent game, made the saves he should have done and wouldn’t be expected to save any of the goals. In other words, did the job I’d expect a keeper at our level to do. Needs to keep it up for me to change my mind, one game isn’t going to do it, and I’d have expected every top half keeper in the division to have let 4 in last night. It’s a measure of how bad he’s been that when he actually performs at the required level it’s hailed. Well done Baz, you did your job. Distribution wise he was excellent, certainly his best performance for us and one of the best I’ve seen from a Saints keeper (although to be fair to ex keepers, not many others were ever really asked to play that way). The problem was who he’s distributing it to). Some nice pings and good throw outs, he was probably our best passer on the day.

There you go, the first goal is a prime example of what we’re discussing. Taken in isolation, it’s not a glaring error. BUT, when the original cross comes in , there is nobody around the centre half who is just outside the 6 yard box. He makes a shite headed clearance, which leads to a long range shot. I’d expect a decent keeper to do one of 3 things there. Ideally come and claim the cross, aggressively & early. Secondly he tells the centre half to leave it and it drifts out of play, or towards the full back who was also unopposed. Or thirdly he shouts early and aggressively so the centre half heads it out for a corner. No, yet again Baz’s organisation, aggression, and positioning skills are non existent. A decent keeper reads that, there’s nobody fucking near where the cross is headed away. It’s keepers ball if he’s proactive and reading the game, he claims it. Still at least he’s not a knob head.

If Baz was in nets for Everton, they’d have been relegated, and despite Messi I doubt The Argies would have won the World Cup with Baz & his putty hands. I’d rather have a decent knob head in nets than suffer anymore Baz ball. Martinez is one of the 6 best keepers in the league anyway.

I’m genuinely intrigued who this keeper is that you’re criticising for being vocal. The nearest to Martinelli I can see is Martínez, but surely you can’t mean him. The bloke who made a world class save in the dying seconds of a World Cup final, who saved 2 penalties in the quarter final, one in the final and won the golden gloves?
