I remember a F A Cup game about 14 years ago when the fancied side were 3-0 up at half-time and then contrived to lose 4-3 to a lower division team. Having seen the replay of his dismissal, it was as we thought at the time, the usual case of Bates being bowled by a straight ball, by playing forward with a gate big enough to drive a bus through.
