Lambert's poor form gave us lots of problems up front IMHO. For one thing, his first touch was appalling which lost us a number of chances but also when he lost headers the ball went back into midfield behind our wingers who had already moved up to support the attack, leaving us exposed. Luckily Barnard played like two players. Also good to see Puncheon improving. He'll give us some good performances. Lallana was excellent. Bournemouth worked well as a team but didn't have much about them. As for their fans, all huff-and-puff but no class. Just like their team.

I wonder if the lack of a shirt sponsor is because we had already planned to limit media access to St. Marys and suspected this would cause the sort of stink that we've seen. I expect a shirt sponsor would be making a lot of noise about lack of exposure if we had one right now and that would make Cortese's position significantly tougher.

Yes. Yes you are. It seems pretty clear that he's saying that he's happy with the squad he's got and could start the season with it but he'd like three more signings. That said, he's not going to be forced to panic buy because we don't have to. These are not "wishy washy comments" and there is certainly not a lack of action. If anything they are words which should comfort us because he says he is a) confident in what he has and b) prepared to buy new blood too. The only problem with his statement is that it doesn't say things in a way which pleases 100% of all Saints fans, calming the nerves of even then most neurotic Saints fans - but then again, seeing what a wide range of neuroses are on show here, how could he please everyone? Time for us all to stop reading too much into every word in every sentence of every press release.

I'm fairly happy with the pre-season really. We wanted fitness and they've worked extremely hard on fitness. We worried about away games on bobbly pitches and that's the sort of game we are focussing on. Don't really see a need to play a Premiership side if we are not playing that kind of team except in the big cups (which surely the "promotion at all costs" posters will say are unwanted distractions). I'd rather they did a simple, short boot camp and hit the actual tactical games earlier but that's splitting hairs a bit. Here's to the season start.

I don't agree with the concerns about Harding. Surely it is conceivable that the plan is to play Harding in those games (away?) when we need more defensive cover for our wingers and Dickson in those games where we are free to attack more aggressively. Also injuries to one of our wingers may force a change to a more defensive or offensive thinking full-back. Strange that this forum obsessed about a "Plan B" but then gets suspicious when we sign him.
