I think he could do a decent job in the championship. The problem is he never suited our style of play and seemed on a completely different wavelength from the other players. We played with the likes of Lallana and Guly cutting in from wide and into central possitions. Steve is much more the traditional wide man, running for the by-line with chalk on his laces. Let's not demonise him as being useless. Aside from the Reading game he came on and made a big difference at home to Ipswich and at Coventry and he had a decent game on Boxing Day against Palace. He also changed the game when he came on at Cardiff but it was far too late to make a difference. There were other decent performances too, just not consistent enough to make the spot his own. Good luck to him wherever he ends up. Seems a nice lad (on twitter anyway) and clearly has some tallent.

I think it was a good sub. Gaston was class on the ball but looked a bit off the pace and gave the ball away trying to be too clever. Davis gave us a bit more grit and helped us dominate the midfield.

Special mentions to Lambert, Morgan, Shaw, Clyne, Yoshi... actually I can't think of a poor performance today. Gazza in no-man's land for their goal but did little else wrong, not that we were ever really pressured.

I wouldn't half mind these scores at half time. Saints winning, Villa, Reading and Pompey losing. Don't make any subs. They will want to come out and attack to get an early goal back. Just keep the ball, keep the pressure on when they have it and hit them on the counter.

Yevhen Khacheridi. 6ft 6in brick sh*thouse CB from Dynamo Kiev. Has some limitations but I saw him boss it in the air away to Stoke City last year, something our lot can only dream of. I'd also love Yarmolenko or Konoplyanka from Ukraine but they are both attacking players with a sizeable price tag on their heads.

I feel sorry for his heart problems but on the other hand he has been doing a bad impression of a footballer for about 10 years before he retired.

Andrei Pereplyotkin (Or now Andrejs Pereplotkins now he has decided to be Latvian) turned up at Derby in the Poortaloo era and made no impact what so ever. Ended up at Skonto Riga when he left Saints. Awesome on CM03/04. I think players like Saga and Skacel were the victims of circumstance, more specifically Burley. The later formed a very credible left sided partnership with Bale in the brief period he played in midfield. I think missing the whole of preseason ruined his fitness though. Saganowski's goals came in fits and starts, very much a confidence player and reminded me of Beattie to an extent. Awesome on his day and scored some brilliant goals in healthy numbers when the team suited him. I certainly don't buy all the 'only playing for a contract' boolacks people come out with. For me the biggest disappointments were DMG, who ripped the youth leagues appart but couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo in the first team (and still can't with Forest). Tin Man was another (it's his birthday on 23rd December don't forget!) and McCann't are definite candidates too. Griffit, Folly, Jamie Hatch, Jamie White, Fish Mills and Jake Thompson were all good nominations from our youth team too.

Gazza's pass was dreadful in any universe, regardless of the consequences. Even if he had played it neatly into Yoshida's feet he would have been facing the wrong way, under pressure from Dyer and would in all likelyhood just have ended up hoofing it over his shoulder. Never play a short pass out unless you are sure the guy is ready and in acres of space. Gazza clearly wasn't sure, he should have smashed it into the car park and dealt with (at worst) a throw in on the halfway line.

Perhaps he just found it in someone's handbag.

Thought this thread was going to be about a dodgy defensive clearance. With regards to the actual topic, why can't we have venders in the aisles selling hot food and soft drinks like the do in the US. Would take some of the load off the catering at HT.

Ditto. Tattoos I can sometimes understand if you want to show your allegiance to a specific regiment etc. Some kind of badge of honour our whatever. I know I sound like I'm reading the headmaster's rule book here but when it comes to piercings I think it should be women only, one set of holes in the lower ear lobe. Anything else just looks sh*t. Tongues, eyebrows, belly buttons, noses, lips. Grown men with those big black 'spacers' in their ears in an effort to try and make as big a hole as possible... You're not a Fijian tribesman ffs! I've heard those tongue piercings are supposed to give better head but I've never been receiving oral pleasure from a lady and thought, 'Christ this is boring, when's Match of the Day on.'

I just don't get what's going through our players heads sometimes, as in Gazza's ball out to Yoshida. If you're going to play it short out to a defender you have to be absolutely feckin' certain there is nobody near him. If you're not, stick 60 yards on it then we can worry about a Swansea throw in on the half way line instead. It's one of the basics of football surely, if you're under pressure and can't see a pass, stick it in the car park and get yourself organised. It's the same with that Clyne/Fonte throw in against Wigan and several other goals we've shipped. I think Nigel's been feeding them some Dutch space muffins at half time. As a team we played quite well. An almost neutral fan I spoke to thought Cork ran the show but half the time we ignored him when in 20 yards of space. I'd agree he looked good, a definite improvement over Davis. Shaw I thought did no better or worse than Fox. He looked alright but was getting no help from the players in front of him a lot of the time. Overall I think we played alright but we were just a too slow and predictable in our build up. Hard to say on the penalty claims, especially Lallana's 'dive' at the other end of the pitch. If it was indeed a dive he needs a good slap because he should easily have scored from there. Christ knows we hardly had any clear cut scoring chances, if our players deliberately fall over rather than trying to take one they need a stern talking to. Positives from today - Ramirez and Cork look a different class to our other options. When fit and on the same wavelength as the rest I reckon they will be a force to be reckoned with. - We didn't go behind all game, for the first time this season - Pompey lost - I don't feel so bad about losing at Leeds anymore. It's clearly a very hard place to go and get a result.
