As I recall there were 3 councils who had a say in the project. Southampton was run by Labour, Eastleigh the Lib Dems and Hampshire Conservative.
It's no wonder it never happened.......
I guess the problem is that the league can't be seen to help one club at the expense of others. Say they give Pompey a hand, and as a result they stay up. Whoever goes down in their place is going to be mightily p1ssed off. And would probably start court proceedings.
If we sign a striker in January, they are likely to spend 90% of their time on the bench. Essentially they would be cover in case Lambert gets injured. There are better areas of the team on which to spend 'real' money.
Did consider that, but it's looking like the 6th Feb and Saints are away that day.
Other option was England Wales in the 6 Nations, but don't think we'd be able to get tickets.
