  1. I think the decline started when they were bought by Newsquest which itself is US owned. The amount of news decreased to be replaced with adverts. There is very little old-fashioned journalism but that seems to be the way of most local papers. I have a few copies of the Echo from about 30 years ago and the amount of actual news in these is probably 3 or 4 times greater than it is today.
  2. Don't really get all this loyalty stuff. Are you loyal to your employer? Players aren't fans, they are employees and, if they get the offer of what they see as a better job, they go for it. I'm sure that most of us would do the same. Contracts seem to mean very little so, if they want to go, make sure that they put in a transfer request so that they don't get their loyalty payments.
  3. Didn't he score a hat-trick against Rochdale in the League Cup on his first-team debut?
  4. Although they are allowed charitable status with it's tax advantages. Why they are classed as charities is a mystery to me.
  5. Gove should look into this latest revelation: "A joint Ofsted-MI5 report released today revealed the extent to which Britain is run by former pupils of a shady network of schools. Open only to individuals holding extreme wealth, these “public” schools – many of them hiding their activities under the pretense of being charities – are accused of producing “culturally isolated” pupils. Among the practices listed in the damning report are: girls and boys educated separately; the regular use of physical violence on pupils; pupils forced to learn arcane dead languages such as Latin; pupils schooled in the history of warfare, including an explicit focus on the so-called “Trojan Horse” tactic; pupils forced to attend religious ceremonies known as 'assemblies' and 'services'; pupils required to wear bizarre dress and take part in cultish rituals. Unsurprisingly, the report suggests that many pupils leave these schools culturally isolated. A survey of 2014 leavers showed that many were unable to identify any of the members of One Direction, or give the price of bus ticket into town. On the positive side, they could name the entire England polo team, and knew the best deals on yacht hire in Europe and the USA. Many warn that Britain is in danger of being taken over by the alumni of these institutions. Neither the Prime Minister, the Mayor of London or the Royal Family were available for comment." 6. A real talent. Loved him in Bottom, the odd appearance in Blackadder and as Alan B'stard.

    D-Day 70

George Patton wanted to give the Wehrmacht back their weapons, join together and carry on going eastwards.
  8. Everyone to be imprisoned in their seats while the game is in progress. This will stop them wandering up and down the steps and blocking my view.
  9. It's now been revealed that Gove has known about this for 3 years. A Birmingham headmaster had meetings with the Education department voicing his concerns about what was happening. Nothing was done as it was thought that it would reflect badly on Gove's pet project - Free Schools.
  10. Awful lot of marketing-speak ****** in that statement. "By utilising Green 4’s experience in CRM we will be able to gain a far better understanding of the needs of our supporters, and ensure that they receive a five star service tailored to their requirements." Why don't they just ask us?
  11. Just signed a new contract with Leicester (not that contracts seem to be worth much).
  12. The UKIP "Communities" spokesperson said the reason that they didn't do very well in London was because the London electorate was "too well educated". Says it all, really.
  13. I'd take Hernandez. He's got a bit of pace and knows where the goal is, the sort of player we could do with. However he would have to want to come and not just because it was the only way that they could get Shaw. We've been caught out before by accepting players as part of a deal (Dixon, Speedie, Ripley).
  14. The Evening Standard, which for some time has been saying that MP is a certainty for the Spurs job, now appears to be backtracking somewhat suggesting that there are differences in the Spurs camp over the new appointment. As well as De Boer, Benitez has been mentioned and even Ancelotti if Real Madrid lose in the CL final. http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/mauricio-pochettino-is-no-certainty-as-tottenham-hope-to-install-new-boss-next-week-9416156.html
  15. I had a cash-in-hand job at Southampton Guildhall in the early 70's taking tickets and generally keeping an eye on things. Got to see the Who, Bowie, Elton John, Slade and Rory Gallagher amongst others. The Who were incredibly loud, Bowie was a bit of a ripoff as he only did about 40 minutes and Slade sounded exactly like they did on vinyl.
  16. For us oldies, "Good Morning, Vietnam" had some good stuff from the late 60's - early 70's.
  17. I've had absolutely no information about any of the candidates. The onus appears to be on the individual voter to go online and look for the views of the various candidates. Fine for the IT literate but not everyone is.
  18. So, how often should we be told that nothing has changed? Every day? Every hour? Every 10 minutes?
  19. The latest UKIP looney is Mr Gordon Ferguson who is standing for election in Southport. According to Mr F: "The Lib-Lab-Cons have conspired with a foreign power, the EU, and are all thereby guilty of treason. They have sold Britain, which is the fifth largest economy, illegally into increasing slavery inside the EU dictatorship. Those responsible should be hung by the neck until dead" But, he says this is unlikely to happen because; “As likely as not, however, they will never be brought to account because our senior police, Crown Prosecution Service and judges are almost all exclusively freemasons, and Britain’s courts have been utterly corrupt for many years. They are almost all in the pocket of the EU." Asked whether he thought his rivals’ voters should also hang, Mr Ferguson said: “If that is the law of the land, that should apply.” The decision is for judges, not him he added. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/ukip/10839448/My-rivals-should-be-hanged-for-treason-says-Ukip-candidate.html
  20. Eze's worth a look. It's a "perched village" between Nice and Monaco located 1400 ft above sea level and built on a small outcrop of rock. Stunning views along the coast although it is a bit of a tourist trap and seems to have more restaurants and arty shops than residents. St. Tropez is very touristy but it's amusing to watch the huge yachts (some never seem to leave harbour) and the very rich coming and going.
  21. When do they start on the other bit which extends the pitches up to Twiggs Lane?
  22. Another one comes out of the woodwork: UKIP's small business spokesman and election candidate is prosecuted for employing 7 illegal immigrants in his restaurant. The word "hypocrisy" comes to mind.
  23. When the price is right, all clubs are "selling" clubs. Spurs sold their best player to Real Madrid. Arsenal couldn't keep hold of Van Persie, Man Utd lost Ronaldo. All this hand-wringing won't change anything. When anything happens, we'll be told. The media see all the teams outside the top 5 or 6 as prey to the "big" clubs and, to a large extent, that's true, so it's easy journalism for them to focus on our young talent. If it happens we'll still have a team next season and, hopefully, some cash to spend. Life goes on...
  24. If you can't find a cable, upload the file to cloud storage. There's plenty of free ones around.
  25. Suppose you could say the same about us. Katherina owns the club and, as she was frequently at games sporting a red and white scarf, she could be described as a fan.
