  1. They were interviewing a WW2 veteran on R4 a couple of weeks ago about this scene. He pointed out that the Sherman guzzled fuel (about 8-12mpg) and this one seemed to go on forever. He also said that an immobilsed tank was a sitting duck and that any crew would scarper as soon as possible. The Germans had a very efficient tank-buster and they would have used this first before attempting to approach a tank.
  2. Grant Coleman interviewing Harry Redknapp: "I'm down to the bare bones, Grant" He said that every week.
  3. Thomas Cromwell : The Untold Story of Henry VIII's Most Faithful Servant by Tracy Borman If you're interested in Tudor history and especially if you've read Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies" which were fictionalized accounts of Cromwell, this is a true portrait of the man taken from documents written at the time. He's quite a complex character rising from very humble beginnings to being one of Henry VIII's closest advisers. He was a devoted family man but could be extremely ruthless in carrying out his master's wishes, sending many people to execution. Instrumental in the break with Rome and the subsequent persecution of the Catholics, his great achievement was securing Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn.

  9. Remember him saying that, at the end of the Man U game when we were relegated, the fans still applauded the team off. He said "We didn't deserve that, we'd let them down."

  14. A Tory MEP was being interviewed about this on R4 this morning. When asked when they first knew about this, all he would say was "It's a disgrace". The interviewer asked the question 3 times but got the same answer.
  15. According to the latest IPSOS-MORI poll, while UKIP support has been growing in the polls, the percentage of people wishing to remain in the EU has grown from 41% in late 2011 to 56% now. Those wishing to leave have fallen from 49% to 36% over the same period. There is also a majority that wish to stay in among the supporters of the 3 main parties. https://www.ipsos-mori.com/researchpublications/researcharchive/3463/Support-for-EU-membership-highest-for-23-years-even-as-UKIP-rises-in-the-polls.aspx

  18. Saw it from work as it came up Southampton Water. Had my camera ready but it was too foggy for any decent shots. It's big!!
  19. As you're in SO16, go and see Pete King in Salem St (just off St James Road). Decent, honest bloke and a Saints season ticket holder. I've used him for years without any problems.
  20. That's a bit too blatant. Just loosen the valves a bit, leave it for a an hour or so, then tighten them back up. They'll come out to flat tyres but no obvious cause.
  21. I lost my brother to lung cancer last year. When we were discussing funeral music, I thought about the old Holllies hit "He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother)" but we got distracted on something else so I never suggested it. I was annoyed with myself later but, by then it was too late. A week or 2 later I was helping sort through his things and when we'd finished, I got into the car to go home, switched on the radio and this song started. It wasn't half way through or anything, it was as though they were waiting for me to turn the radio on. Obviously a coincidence, or was it?
  22. Didn't he score in that snowy Monday night game against Liverpool? I think it was Alan Ball's first game in charge after the departure of Branfo*t.
  23. Solent Sky, down by Ocean Village is also worth a visit. Doesn't look much from the outside but inside is a Sandringham flying boat that you can wander around, a Spitfire, a Supermarine S6A (Schneider Trophy) and a host of others. Loads of exhibits concerning the history of aviation in the Solent area. http://www.solentskymuseum.org/
