Austin looks way sharper this pre-season, passing the ball well and shielding very well. Finally a good shot on goal, well done, Gabby. The team is defending well without the ball and getting a lot of players into the opossition box for crosses. Those are the things that jump out to me compared to Puel's tactis. There is still a long way to go, obviously.
-
Boufal tires himself physicallyand mentally with all the trickery. Pass or cut inside and shoot, lad.
-
More of a poor's man Dybala. A quick and direct player, ideal for a counter-attacking style. I'm concerned about his frame though. Could be pushed around easily by big defenders on the Prem.
-
If Pellegrino wants to apply high pressure to recover the ball quickly as it is believed he will try to do, this team will get killed because they don't have enough aggressiveness. This is a glaring weakness on the squad. I would say the only one that really worries me. We miss Wanyama. And Oriol is more of a positional player. He can't go roaming all over the pitch because he then would to leave a huge hole. We need someone who harasses opponents, gets in their faces. Clasie does give you that but just isn't quick, strong nor big enough. What Oriol needs is a partner of Kante/Gueye/Mendy type.

FdB dind't do well in Italy. Why bring him? Does he have a special relationship with VvD? Not that I'm aware of. And about Pellegrino... I was suprised by the fact that he had such a good season with Alaves. Here in Argentina he coached two teams and didn't achieve anything out of the ordinary. Of all Bielsa's understudies (Sampaoli, Pochettino, Berizzo) he is the most defensive-minded. Or maybe the more "balanced". However you want to see it. Not very different from FdB. Neither of this two coacher are like Poch. But you never know what a manager does until he knows his squad.

Never have I seen Saints playing such beautiful football
Leo_ARG replied to Singapore Saint's topic in The Saints
I don't think the excitement of football is related to how much do you keep possesion but how quick do you pass forward with intent and precision. We are doing that now because confidence is high and everyone is happy with Puel tactics. With Koeman at times we played 5-3-2 and it was horrible football. Going always route 1, hoofing the ball and it wasen't very effective. It was direct and it was BORING as hell. Because the ball was coming back when the central defender beat Pelle on the air or whoever was up. Sometimes the ball didn't came back and we were able to score but it sure wasen't "exciting". The most exciting football when Koeman was the times we played 4-3-3 and our wingers were given freedom to take on the man and dribble past them and then cross. That's someting that I could say Puel doesen't like as much. The difference with early in the season when we played the diamond is that players weren't moving enough, and when they made runs in behind the passes waren't going there, there wasn't enough confidence in the players to pass and whoever made the run became frustrated so he wouldn't do it next time. It is a vicious circle that resulted in a slow passing, always backwards or sideways. Now it is a different story. We are playing mostly short passes but it is quick and with great precision. It hurts the opposition and it is exciting. Passes are short and quick. And if you like crossing well, it is still there because Bertrand and Cedric overlap a lot. Look at JWP's latest goals, for example. -
Redmond looks full of confidence, Long has none. I mean, NONE. You can see it on the willingness to take chances. That volley from Redmond was superb. Only a player that has confidence dares to do it and does as well as he did. In the other hand, Long was free of defenders and went down. Happy to see PEH playing as he did. Anybody has the stats of his passing? I think he didn't miss a single one. Clasie can shoot. Yoshi my MOM. Love you, Yohsi.
-
That pass to Long was a poem. He may be a whiner but he is right, he has to play 90 minutes if fit. You can't take off the man that can give you that spark that you need to break down a defense. A difference maker. Oh, and Redmond is getting better every game.

Why no Saints players in England U18 & U19 squads?
Leo_ARG replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
Interesting. Jake Vokins just signed a pro contract, he is 17. Callum Slattery has also signed a pro contract and he is currently 18. What is going on here? -
Tadic and Redmond were the only ones capable of creating something against the Spurs. JWP scored but he was poor all game as was Davis. When Tadic went off we couldn't muster any kind of offense. He was playing well. Long and Tadic have combined for a lot of goals in the past. Should the Saints scored it probably would have been Tadic playing a pass behind the Spus high defensive line for Shane. Tadic is the key of this 4-2-3-1. It doesen't really work without a player like him. He may lose influence on the game occasionally, a lot of players of his kind do, but when he had the ball he was creating. I don't understand the criticism and the change. He was taken off and we were a poorer team since. I think Puel keeps JWP on the pitch because of the set pieces. Yet, if you keep Davis and Tadic on the pitch I think you are okay. Having said that, it's stupid to go to the press. And sadly, now he is earned a place on the bench. He doesen't do himself any favours doing this stupid s***.
-
I also have been saying this from day one. He is a classic no. 10. He just need to add a bit more body strength and he did. Puel dosen't buy the stupid trend of placing playmakers on the wings. Viva Claude.
-
Two teams really form Southampton. Good going forward and poor in our half, not only defending but clearing the ball or playing it out from the back. Caceres should help with that. Tadic MOM. Could have been more involved but he did everything right. We all love Romeu but he was sloppy when we were leading. Too many times he needed to clear it to the wings instead of putting teammates under pressure with short passes or losing the ball altogether. We lack physical presence on the midfield. Is PEH injuried? He should have been there to help Romeu hold the midfield when it was 2-1. You could see the tying goal was coming milles away. This was a game for J-Rod or Hojberg to be more tall and strong. We were bullyed by Watford and struggled in every set piece. Not impressed by this win, and I don't think Claude will be happy with our defensive effort. We need to be better because you can't get a save from Forster this days. On the bright side: Tadic and Manolo are soooo good together. Redmond is getting very good cutting inside. And Boufal is ready to go again.
-
Tadic likes playing with a striker who tries to beat the defensive line, looking for space behind the backline. That's why he plays much better with Long than Rodriguez. And Gabba being more of a complete player than Long you can see why they are having good chemistry. Gabba calls for passes with good diagonal movement and Tadic loves to pass it into space. Perfect match. Keep em coming.

How I think the front 3 should set up: -TADIC-LONG-GABBIADINI How I think Puel will set up: -RODRIGUEZ-GABBIADINI-REDMOND
-
1-Tadic 2-VVD 3-Romeu

Uruguayan journalist tweeted half an our ago: "Martin Caceres will have his medical with @SouthamptonFC in a couple of minutes. He reached an economic agreement with the club yesterday".
-
A glimmer of hope for the remainder of the season. He is keen to play for us and we absolutely need a CB who can also play RB. Seems an excelent fit if he is healthy. Les can count his lucky stars if this one goes down.

Interesting to see Manolo as a winger/inside forward. I read on TW that his best season came playing on his off wing, cutting in from the right and curling it in. Or maybe it's the return of the diamond, but I think it will be a 4-3-3. At the beginning of the season I never thought I would be more pleased to see JWP than PEJ out there. He has finally done some progress.
-
Never a pen. No deliberate intent to handball.
-
Can't play possession football with a keeper like Forster. Pep surely knows. Can't play possession football when you are scared of the closing down. I'm affraid this team isn't really suited for it yet. Too many times there was time and space to go forward, and they pass sideways o backwards until they reach Forster. Then he hoofs it and we lose the ball. Frustrating. From what I see we don't need a striker. We badly need a physically strong box to box type of midfielder.
-
Looking better going forward. No surprise as Redmond isn't playing. Created chances against one of the best defensive teams and one who puts 10 players behind the ball. Unlucky to be tied. Still, I would like to see more of a passing game, move the ball quicker from side to side like the Spurs did with us, so it moves the defensive line of the opposition to create space. High crosses aren't effective against those huge CBs. I'm impressed with Boufal's fight for the ball and body strenght. He protects the ball well for a small player. Delighted to see Long finally score. Lovely long hug given by Tadic to him on the celebration. Everybody on the pitch knew it was a huge monkey off his back.
-
Me neither. Doesen't seem fit and doesen't get in good scoring positions. He needs to anticipate and attack the ball on the crosses. Charlie and Long do that far better. Maybe Jay Rod is more of a winger? Not sure. This has been by far the worst I've seen from Hojbjerg. He hasen't adjusted to the constant high pressing of the Premier. Too many times he took too many touches. I would like to see Steven Davis, he is more positive with the ball and can get into open space and hurt a bit more. Still, Pierre is class. It takes time to adjust. Look at Clasie, it took him a full year to be an effective player. I had already given up on him. Glad I was wrong.
