trousers Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Pardew admitted he was worried at the lack of information he had available to him on Saints’ League One opponents this season. He said that would have to be rectified very quickly and he was working on bringing things up to scratch. “I think it’s unfair to walk into a club and criticise the last regime and I’m certainly not going to do that,” he said. So, what were Wotte and the Southampton Football Club Board doing with themselves in April, May and June? Edit: boy, have I got out of bed the wrong side today or what?! miserableoldgit Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Solent reported this morning that he was likely to go for Kevin Dillon (skate connection??) and Wally Downes. Downes is a real "character" who got into a "spat" with Neil Warnock. Not difficult admittedly!!

S-Clarke Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Wally Downes would be a great appointment. He was one of the brains behind readings ''walk of the league'', he was very highly rated and was loved by the reading players - he is a defensive coach i believe. Downes was featured in that C4 programme whose name I have forgotton! It was where they trained someone up in a certain profession and then tried to convince people that they hadn't just walked off of the street. Downes was manager of Brentford at the time and was responsible for training this bloke up to try and convince a panel that he was not the ringer. um pahars Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Faking It. It was indeed Faking It on Channel 4. The guy he mentored was a Chess Champion who didn't fool John Barnes, Dermot Gallagher and that woman from 5Live. Hopefully he can perform better turning some of our players in to the real deal!!!! Endemol are showing an equivalent version in Holland whereby they put a Dutch no hoper in charge of an English professional team to see if he can pull it off ......................................... LOL... Have to say I'm quietly confident all the parts of the jigsaw are coming together at last for SFC. AP and a solid support team, new players and a new owner who, on the face of it, seems to be a decent guy with a good approach. Hopefully a season of stability and progressive improvement once the -10 has been overcome.

Upper mid table and a push next season would get the thumbs up from me.

I too think that would be a reasonable expectation for this season, with anything else being a bonus and putting us ahead of schedule.

Saint J 77 Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 AP definitely needs to get on and appoint his assistant and staff asap, as I am sure he is already aware. He has got his hands full trying to sort out the current squad and needs all the help he can get to sort this mess out before the season starts. I feel he still needs to organise some more pre season friendlies on top of the friendlies we have left. Is it just Hearts and OPR left now before the season starts? It would be good for the squad to have a few more games together with any potential new signings and new back room staff in place otherwise it is going to be a very slow start getting off the mark. Dicko Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Dillon is well respected as a cracking coach Downes is legendary for creating a brilliant team spirit They'd make a great team with AP, I couldn't care less Dillon played for Pompey 15-20 years back

hughieslastminutegoal Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Mind you they were pretty clueless about the CCC and they were in that for 3 seasons. Why would we need to worry about the opposition when we were producing such quality from the Academy? After all they should have walked that league. WE don't need to bog ourselves down with the mundanities of CCC (and L1) life, surely?

He has got his hands full trying to sort out the current squad and needs all the help he can get to sort this mess out before the season starts. What I find surprising is that this was not all sorted out at about the same time AP joined. It makes me think that the appointment was all a bit rushed. i found watching the SaintsTV thing the other night that AP does seem genuinely shocked at the magnitude of the task at hand. I would have thought AP would have had a ready made assistant waiting in the wings, but it seems not. Managers also usually have a few players lined up but agains this seems not to be the case. Big Ron fan Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 Wally Downes was in my year at senior school - St. Clement Danes in West London. He is a character.
NickG Posted 23 July, 2009 Share Posted 23 July, 2009 The Reading promotion side in our first year in CCC was the best side I have seen in the CCC. They didn't have a player with experience of higher level but were incredibly organised and fast. Dillon was first team coach.
