With todays Internet service would Ali Dia of got as far as he did or would the likes of us smelt a fishy one?

Reason why I'm asking is because within 30 minutes of a player signing for Saints this forum reveals his career history and lots of you tube clips of his goals.

Do you think Souness would of listened to us if we found something?

I remember seeing a clip of Ali Dia on South Today training at Staplewood just before the infamous appearance.

I thought, at the time, he didnt look much of a player but obviously considered Souness knew more than me.

As I recollect he almost scored but fluffed a decent chance. Wonder what would have happened if he had scuffed the chance in?

Often wonder if the signing of Kevin Keegan could have been kept so secretive in the internet age.

What chance someone knowing a relative of his wife's hairdresser in Hamburg with news they had been househunting in Hampshire.or someone bringing him by taxi to the Potters Heron ?

I made this very point to my wife the other day , she was largely uninterested

I don't know if Souness would have listened, but probably not.

Lowe and Co certainly didn't last year when we signed Anthony Pulis!

Was anyone excited by his signing?

What got me was Souness obviously thought he was ****e and took him off, had he not seen him train?

No, not really. He only came in the week before and i think the training ground was flooded for some or all of that time.

I think Souness himself said it was a gamble. We had a few injuries and he hadn't really seen a lot of him. Then someone else got injured so he gave him a go.

That all said people forget Neil Heaney also had the 'indignity' of being a subbed sub. Yet he had a good long spell at the Saints!

I didn't think he did that bad when he came on,he nearly scored.

If anything he just looked a bit unfit and rusty......I've certainly seen worse players pull on a saints shirt.

Going back to the original post though,I think it would have been easier to spot he was a fraud but the Internet is also responsible for millions of pounds of fraud everyday so who knows.

I remember being a subbed sub for Steyning Strikers when I was 8, ruined what I believe would have been a brilliant football career.

It was pretty much a fluke that Dia got anywhere near the side. A trial game that would surely have shown him up was cancelled due to the bad weather and because we had so many injuries it was a choice of not putting out a full squad of substitutes or giving him a place on the bench.

Although he looked very poor when he came on he wasn't as hilarious as the urban myth would have you believe. Every Saints player that day was dreadful. What a great story it really would have been as he came close to scoring with his first touch. The real consequence of Dia was that we then became perhaps too cautious regarding foreign players on offer - for example we were given the first choice on Paolo Wanchope. We turned him down and he helped Derby win at Old Trafford in one of his first games and always caused us trouble - although being pretty much rubbish against everyone else.
