sad saints fan Posted 3 October, 2009 Share Posted 3 October, 2009 The other thing to remember is that most of the other teams in this league do not have our resources,so when injuries and suspensions kick in later in the season many of the teams above us will struggle to find any consistency. I know we have not set the world alight at the moment but if we continue moving in the right direction, which I firmly believe we are,you never know what could happen. Having said that though I will not be unduly disappointed with mid table .............................................................................................................................................................................by christmas

This is massively optimistic. Sixteen points if five wins and and draw. That's not five wins and a draw and we'll be in a play-off spot, that's five wins and a draw BETTER than everyone between us and a play-off spot. By the end of next week we'll be a quarter of the way through the season, which means us having any interest after 46 league games is as near impossible as makes no difference. Enjoy your walk. In ten games time the play off teams will have about 32 points - thats on a pretty conservative 1.5 points a game. So even if we win the next ten games in a row we still wouldn't be in the top six. A highly ambitious 2 points per game (Championship winning form) for the rest of the season from now would see us maybe, maybe scrape the play offs, some seasons 71 points has been enough. But that's Championship winning form. You need to get your story straight, Le God. The other day you were saying how fantastic Pardew was doing because it compared to Strachan's early performance for a relegation-plagued Southampton in 2000 when we were one of the lowest spending teams in the division. When in this league we are the highest spending teams by a mile and you benchmark us against perennial relegation strugglers. And now we're aiming for the playoffs?? Make your mind up. IN MY DAY Posted 3 October, 2009 Share Posted 3 October, 2009 Just look at all the teams above us and there goal difference, right up to mid table they are all in the minus. That tells its own story, once this team beds in and these draws turn to wins we should start to get a bit of momentum going.

I still think we will make the play-offs. Our early season games, as it turns out, were against some of the better teams in the league. We should be beating most of these teams easily with our squad. As regards Pardew and Strachan, I was merely pointing out to those who thought Pardew was underachieving that his early results are no worse than our most successful 21st Century manager... oldsarum Posted 3 October, 2009 Share Posted 3 October, 2009 We are making slow but steady progress at the moment,Positive points start of Oct , if we can catch up next team by end of the month, and be out of bottom four by end of Dec I think we wil be doing Ok, then for the push for playoff's. Too many seem to expect things to happen overnight, the performance on tuesday was excellent, we played well had oppportunities to finish the game but failed to do so. Afterwards many of this board were calling for Pardew's head. The signs were there on tuesday for anyone to see, that we were close to getting things right. Today we didn't IMO play as well but scored at the right times which made all the difference. Keep the faith IMO we are slowly getting there. smithy Posted 3 October, 2009 Share Posted 3 October, 2009 (edited) We can do it! Things are now starting to click, we will strengthen again in January and at that point I think we will be mid table. St Marco Posted 3 October, 2009 Share Posted 3 October, 2009 The season has a looong way to go. If we can go on a bit of a run, say win the next 4 games we should not be too far from getting out of the bottom lot. If we can get out of there by xmas then we have 5 months to try and push up the table. It is possible just going to be very difficult.

That's exactly what I said at the start of the season. The fact that we've spent the first quarter of the season in relegation form is reason enough to change that view. Play-offs now are highly unlikely - we need Championship winning form from here on in. Not one win and four draws in five and "aren't we doing well". Two points per game average for the rest of the season, and even that might not be enough. And finally, just for Le God - after our fine win yesterday we are now....wait for it.............still 16 points off the play offs. St Marco Posted 4 October, 2009 Share Posted 4 October, 2009 It can be done. A few seasons ago in CCC Hull were doing crap but with 22 games to go they won 14 of them and drew 4. 46 points from 66. If you put a run like that in then your always going to have a chance. I don't think were reach the playoffs, i don't expect us too. But were only 11 games in. I think Leeds will win the league and Charlton will finish 2nd. In January if we can ship out a lot of the players not needed or those who don't want to be here and replace them with the quality levels we already see from Hammond,Lambert,Trotman,Harding etc then we could do really well in the last 5 months. If we can be consistent and win say 60% of the rmaining games and draw another 20% we could do it. But that is not our goal, our goal is the team above us. Charlie Wayman Posted 4 October, 2009 Share Posted 4 October, 2009 Well, sure beats ordering a noose... I always thought the mark of a Saint was hope. Wishful thinking has it's place, certainly but it didn't keep us in the Premiership; it didn't win us the FA Cup in 2003; it didn't keep us in the CCC last season. Nor will building houses on sand ensure safety in an earthquake. Those of us who acknowledge realism are equally as fanatically Saints as you but recognise that the world is not tinged pink and that experience is a very hard taskmaster. 50+ years of trudging up to The Dell and SMS has taught me if nothing else that sh*t happens and seemingly sh*t happens more often at this club than at many others. So always take one little step at a time in your hopes and ambitions. We won on Saturday so let us HOPE that we might do so again next Friday.
