Can I urge anyone who did not hear it to try to listen to the Roy Hodgson interview with Mark Pugatch and Henry Winter which was broadcast on Radio Five tonight. A really good insight into modern football management - if not very long.

Worth a listen before we cast judgement over any manager, especially our own.

That is all! ;)

any chance of a podcast? Whats the show called. Sorry for my ignorance but i'm the other side of the pond.

Gawd blimey you're asking the wrong fella here...

It could be on iplayer on bbc.co.uk

It would be radio fivelive, this evening's 'Sport on Five'.

The programme is a few hours long but the interview was on around 7:20ish from memory so 20-30 mins into the programme?

Yours,

Chief Luddite!!

Have to say, he has amazed me. Would have been hopping mad had we appointed him say, after WGS, but in hindsight would have been one of the best choices we could have made!

Why would you have been mad? He has coached all over Europe and done well everywhere relatively.

Very good manager indeed

I like Roy Hodgson.

I also like the way he says "r".

Pedantry here but ironically I think RH would pronounce "r" perfectly. When the "r" is aspirated as in "arr" he wouldn't have a problem. It's when it's not aspirated as in "wruh" that he'd struggle...

...I think I should get out more.

Could be the brain matter getting a bit scrambled, but wasn't he linked to us once as one of the favorites for the job? (Don't ask me which time we've had so ******* many of them)

I listened to "The Game" podcast with Phil Jupitus, Gabriele Marcotti and I think Henry Winter last week down the gym and they were waxing lyrical about Hodgson and the fact that Fulham are one of the best drilled teams in the league.

They also said that there is a myth that he was poor at Blackburn. I must admit I thought he had a bad time there - but I guess the stats must suggest otherwise.

He gave us £7.25m for Kevin Davies.

As I remember they went on a miserable run at the end of his first season, which then carried on into the new season and he was sacked, probably prematurely, quite early into that season.

Sacked (by mutual consent ) straight after our 2-0 win there in Nov 98. It was only our 2nd win of the season and even Steve Basham scored. So you can see why he had to go.

Brian Kidd didn't keep them up though.

I agree with you but he has been considered by many (wrongly in my view) as a journeyman and a bit of a failure because of his short stints at Bristol City and then Blackburn.

...just to add fuel to this rather mundane item ....about the "r" s.

Roy Hodson was a rather successful manager of Swedish club sides for many years in the 1970s-on. The Swedish pronunciation of "r"s is ." a bit special," or just bl**dy annoying for non-swedes who have to struggle with the langauge and RH's subsequent journey's around the globe managing all sort of third world teams probably hasn't helped his diction, however - a good bloke !

But if you think he sounds strange - you should hear another ex-pat. Briton

Stuart Baxter (currently managing Finlands national side) when SB tries to speak Swedish - it's hilarious !

So the stats seem to show that he got Blackburn to 6th and into Europe in his first season. They had finished 13th the previous season so that was quite an improvement. Then as you say he was sacked in November having had a bad start to the campaign but having lost key players. He did buy the 'pup' Kevin Davies who later went on to be a the first name on the team sheet and leading thug at Bolton for years.

So a mixed record I guess but not quite as bad as I thought it was.

I think people from Hampshirrrre have particular trouble with Scandinavian "r"s...

I lived in the UAE for eight years and met Hodgson a few times in Dubai when he was manager of the UAE. He was always the real gentleman, but was really shafted and taken for granted by the locals.

I haven't listened to the programme yet (but will do) so don't know if he mentioned his short spell in the UAE? must have been around 2002/03 (although my memory is fading - must be the sun). The official line is that he was sacked because the UAE didn't do very well in the Gulf Cup. But the true and rarely quoted version is that he wasn't allowed to pick the team he wanted. The UAE FA was run by one of the sons of the ruler/president (the Al Nahyan family) who also owned the top team in the UAE at that time - Al AIn (who played in an obscene purple strip) - he wanted Hodgson to basically pick the team that he wanted. This came to a head in the Gulf Cup and Hodgson essentially walked out - in fact he went back to Europe after the tournament and didn't return

Shortly after that I met John Burridge a few times in Muscat in Oman. I used to visit Muscat regularly and when John first went out there he was staying at the same hotel - another great guy

I'd have been glad to have him as manager here after Strachan or any time since and think he'd have been a better England manager than Keegan or McClaren (no ****).

If memory serves things went wrong at Blackburn as he had to deal with Flowers leaving along with Colin Hendry, Chris Sutton and Tim Sherwood all deciding that they wanted to move on. That's the spine of the team gone.

From what I read at the time he had a real player power problem.

Some people will read that as evidence that Hodgson lost the dressing room but they all left anyway. I think Sherwood was particularly keen to go to Spuds and Hendry wanted to go back to Scotland.

A really interesting interview.

I was especially delighted to hear him agree with what I have been going on about regarding the Sporting or Technical Director. HE should together with the Chairman appoint the Manager. The next time anybody argues with me I will simply say "Roy Hodgson agrees with me."

No, by the way, I don't think he has read my posts on here. He's figured it out all by himself.
