Saints/Pompey rivalry

i apologise if this should've been posted in the Lounge, please feel free to move..:)

i have recently been frequenting a newish Pompey forum ( as i was invited by their Admin and creator). Well, there is a guy on there who appears to have a MASSIVE problem with anything Saints or Southampton related. There are a 3 or 4 Saints fans on there now, and he has called us all (the 'c' word) and says that he hopes we all effing die etc, etc, no matter WHAT point we are trying to make (so, now of course we just go on there just to wind him up! :D) .Anyway, it got me thinking.

Now, in my mind, this whole Pompey v Saints thing is pretty superficial. I would never HATE someone, just because they hail from the region East of Park Gate, and i would certainly not wish them any ill.(i just hope that they lose football matches and end up with an average attendance of 345!)

so it got me thinking, are there any Saints fans who TRULY,WHOLEHEARTEDLY detest ANYTHING even Pompey related, or do most of you ,like me, just enjoy the banter that goes on between the 2 cities and take it no further than that??

I can't stand people from Portsmouth, people that support Portsmouth FC, people that have a "soft spot" for portsmouth fc, i hate their ground, their owner, their manager, all their players, and each and every single one of their sad misguided followers....but not on a forum (unless they get mouthy) cause that's just silly in my opinion.

whats the forum address and posters name - perhaps we all sign up and take over the 'Pompey' forum with Saints related chat and windups??

LOL....i did think about it, but the Admin would KEEEEELLLLLL me!!! lol...so, it shall remain anonymous! :)

i just HONESTLY can't believ that there are people out ther with SO MUCH hatred for something/someone, just because of where they live or who they support!.......it's almost comparable to religious extremism! (without the bombs, obviously!);)

It's an irrational trait that humans have built up over thousands of years. We're a strange old species.

I hate Portsmouth football club with a passion. I can't explain why I am filled with so much hate for them. My non-Saints friends don't understand it. My Mum can't understand why I say I'll never live in a PO postcode. I can't stand them. I love the banter that goes on and do believe there is a line - but up to that line I will continue to hate that poxy excuse for a football club and their fickle fans.

When I was little I used to listen to Radio Solent every week and their seeming unbiased backing for each and every south coast club rubbed off on me. While a Saints supporter I nevertheless always wanted Pompey and Bournemouth to do well.

However, while I was at university (in Southampton) I spent a year sharing a flat with among others a Pompey fan. Now, on the whole we got on fairly well - except that whenever Southampton lost he would take great glee in being completely obnoxious and rubbing it in with a disdain that I had never seen in my life before. From that time on I began to understand a little of the hatred between the two clubs and began to take great pleasure in every Pompey defeat.

So, my point of view is that some of the hatred between the clubs (and yes I know there are lots of other reasons!) seems to have been sparked by the obsessive hatred & jealousy that Pompey fans developed in their wilderness years back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Having once been the bigger club they couldn't cope with seeing our success (especially in the 70s and 80s) and responded with infantile jealousy. Then as this became more and more purile, so more and more Saints fans in coming into contact with Pompey fans responded as anyone would and grew in reciprocal contempt for them.

But, to answer the original question, while I would say that I take joy in seeing Pompey lose and would not be bothered if they went bust, I would not in reality 'hate' any Pompey fan. Instead I would say that I would hold their club and their support for their club in contempt.

The fact is that my parents and sister now live in Portsmouth (within walking distance of (Should be) Flattened Park) and they have friends who stick up for Pompey, because that is where they have always lived. Those particular people are really nice people. Similarly, I have a couple of friends who are keen Pompey supporters who regularly go to watch them play. And they are really nice people too (despite our occasional banter!)

So, no, I am with you - I dislike the club and enjoy seeing them lose; I take glee at their current troubles; but I don't really hate their fans.

I can't belive that there are people on here that don't hate them, they would have loved it if we had not made it through the summer, deep down they are all the same.

Yes, it's unbelievable that there are some Saints fans who don't have an irrational hatred for another set of footballs fans that live up the road.

Can you not see the irony in your statement? You say they are all the same for hating us and then can't believe we don't all feel the same way.

Thankfully we don't ALL share your views.

I'm a pinko sandal wearing tree hugger, so I would question whether I could hate an entire group of humans based on where they live.

However, I do feel a bit sick when I hear the word 'Portsmouth' and I switch off the telly if ever there's an article about the place, I'm pleased when they lose and I wouldn't be entirely unhappy if the whole place detached from the mainland and made it's way to the Baltic Sea (would anyone notice?).

Apart from that, it's an ok place.

Indeed - I'm sure if a Pompey supporter posted on this forum his views on his own team then everyone on the forum would embrace him and have a balanced opinion of the pros and cons of supporting Pompey or Saints.

Come on, the OP went onto a Pompey forum and posted about Saints and was upset by the response and 'how nasty they all are' and then posts trying to insight a similar response from the Saints forum. Hence my call to put it in /dev/null (which, really, is the big electronic bit bucket in the sky).

I despise most things to do with the club. I find sheer hatred in the fact that for instance, being at Fratton station in the summer and seeing a family with two kids and both the kids were in their Pompey home shirts and both smoking. I couldn't believe it. I seem to find a lot of Pompey fans or people from Portsmouth are actually reasonably ugly and thick, neanderthal-like, creatures.

Ive always found the hatred tends to be so much worse coming from Pompey, rather than from us.I think thats just down to envy because for so many years we were higher than them.

But i have a feeling that very soon,we will take our rightful place above the blue few and then the natural balance will be restored in the universe.

YES i hate Portsmouth FC. YES i want them to fail football wise. BUT having spent 8 years at school in pompey and 20 years living in Gosport (basically little portsmouth), most of my mates are pompey fans. The banter is brilliant, and yes it gets heated at times but i dont want ppl to die FFS, its just bragging rights. The rivalry is so important to us i'd hate it if they went out of business or anything like that, esp as we need to beat them in the CCC next year!

I agree, the pompey fans who are bad are far worse than the southampton yoof. for example at Hampshire cricket games the abusive loutish chants always come from the pompey fans.

(You can tell theyre portsmouth fans coz there is inevitable banter when the cricket gets boring!)

I dont wish anyone death... apart from that Westwood creature, however I am proud of my record that in 30 years of my life, I have never once voluntarilty stepped foot inside Portsmouth and never spent any of my hard earned cash there.

Infact I have been there 4 times in my life, once to the DVLA office and 3 times for Portsmouth v Saints matches.

I f*cking hate them c*nts with a passion.

I know a guy who supports both Saints AND Portsmouth. Try working that one out in your head.

Sounds like he lives locally and likes watching football. Sounds like perfectly rational human behaviour to me.

The words 'rocket' and 'science' spring to mind.

I hate them. With every drop of my blood I hate them. Pointless no mark, club supported by pointless gob****es.

Until they were in the Premiership most people, in what has to be the countries most boring and uninspiring city, supported anyone but their local club. And after a very brief moment in the spotlight they are back to pitifully small crowds.

A sad excuse for a poorly supported club whose few supporters have the biggest mouths in football.

Give me the address of this skate site so i can tell those pussies myself.

But the biggest reason i hate those sad ****s is their ability to make up stories. That bull**** about SCUM (Southampton Company Union Men) is a case in point. Not one tiny little fraction of truth in that whole story. It even doesn't stand up to even the most casual of inspections. (how can you be a company and union man ?)

And yet for years those tossers believed it.

The annoying is, is when you sail into Portsmouth Harbour, it looks slightly impressive. Whereas, sailing up Southampton Water, you're greeted first by a couple of grain silos, and nothing much impressive after that, unless a few liners are in. And I say that in full knowledge that Pimply supporters are reading this and clinging onto every plus they can muster.

Up until the early-mid 80’s while at school I’d never taken much notice of Portsmouth FC. I had no like or dis-like for them, having lived under the protected shroud of Southampton in my youth, to me, Portsmouth were a seaside town, a funfair team in a lower division that were several distant miles away further down the coast.

After attending a few games at The Dell in my early teens and when I started looking for pocket money work in Southampton, I would from time to time see a Pompey supporter here and there but again not take much notice as I hadn’t really encountered them a great deal before, however I had become more aware of the name ‘Scummer’ after a cup game we won in ‘84 and although I had never been called it directly, I didn’t really like hearing it as a put down remark of us.

In the late 80’s I had a bar job at Meon Valley, several PFC players used to frequent the Golf Bar but still I didn’t dislike them although I used to ignore the clicky fingers of some of these guys who demanded instant service.

A couple of years later when I started a new job in Fareham in 1991, on my first day at tea break a group of lads were discussing the weekend football. Being slightly naïve I asked if they had been to the Saints game, to which I received a less than welcome response and was then asked if I was a Scummer. This was my first welcome to the friendly but spiteful banter side of our rivalry, and it troubled me.

In the weeks after I discovered I was the lone Southampton supporter in my shift, surrounded by Pompey with a token few Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool fans. I realised with most I could give a bit back but there were a few who would just glare at me and never speak…ever, which at the time I didn’t understand and thought that I’d not had the opportunity to speak to them before. This is when I discovered the darker side of our rivalry.

I was given a warning by one of my Pompey supporting colleagues that some of them weren’t happy about a Scummer working among them. I knew the guys he was talking about and thought that it couldn’t be that stupid… surely? Putting up with enough from the spiteful remarks from the friendlier contingent was enough but with this too I was really starting to dis-like Pompey fans.

A short time after I was promoted along with a Pompey supporting colleague who I got along well with, however there were a few staff who would never respond, look at me, or do anything I asked but would for my colleague. When the problem was eventually addressed it was purely because I was a Southampton supporter, nothing more, nothing less. I approached each individually only to receive some vile abuse, as they confirmed that they hated me because I was a Scummer, and they would never work, talk or be told what to do by a Scummer.

After trying to address this with my Pompey supporting boss who had actually promoted me, he said it was the nature of the job and that as a Scummer I had to expect that from them which did nothing to help. This only increased my dislike of them more and I started to hate this mindless minority of Pompey fans, it was pathetic. I eventually moved within the company to a nice cosy office shared with 2 other colleagues, one who didn’t like football and the other who thankfully supported Sheffield Utd and I had some respite at last.

A short time after this and after some banter with Pompey fans at work I went to the Alan Knight Testimonial, this was my first experience of rivalry at a local derby. I decided against colours especially as I was taking my Girlfriends younger brother and his mate. It didn’t start too bad but to have the whole of Fratton Park pointing at our end shouting Scummers, Scummers even before KO even was a bit daunting.

After beating them 5-1 and despite Pompey fielding 12 players in the 2nd half I soon discovered getting out of Fratton Park was not going to be as easy as it was getting in. A large number of Pompey fans ran onto the pitch in front of us and around the Milton Rd end spilling their abuse with pointed fingers, but after some police support and entertainment from Dave Beasant and with the Police pushing the Pompey rage back we were let out after what seemed like hours, my opinion of Pompey fans lowered further realising they hated us with a passion I’d not seen before and from my experience at work, many, without any justifiable reason other than us being from Southampton.

If not for a decent few, I would be close to describing my feelings toward Pompey as hatred, in most part for being so pathetic about the rivalry. This was increased more so by one of my Arsenal supporting work colleagues taking his 7 year old Saints supporting nephew to Pompey shopping for toys. Although it shouldn’t be wrong to take a 7 year old child into Pompey wearing a Saints shirt this shouldn’t mean it is ok for a 30 year old something thug in a Pompey shirt to smack his elbow down onto his head for wearing it as he passed by and laughing about it whilst mouthing “Scummer of the future”.

In more recent times, a good number of Pompey supporters I know of were wishing for our demise at the end of last season and the early part of the summer, hoping we would fold and were celebrating before what seemed inevitable. This completed my dislike to a level close to hate, but after the experience I have had over the years from Pompey supporters mine is still nowhere near close to how I've seen majority numbers of Pompey supporters hating us with such pent up anger.

I know a few Pompey supporters that I’m good friends with and of course I don’t dislike them but it seems they are very much in a minority and for that reason alone I hope they survive as a club so we can still have the friendly banter as we do now, they are the true Pompey fans and deserve to see Pompey each week, as for the rest… they don’t even deserve a club to support.

I never used to have any dis-like toward Pompey, the majority of some of that clubs most pathetic and detestable fans over the last 25 years made my mind up for me.

Sorry, this post was so much shorter in my head.:-#

i was at butlins in the 70's with my kids, got a paper walking back to have a read, saw a nipper with a pompey shirt, i mentioned i supported a team up the road from them, the kid smiled, but mum and dad both looked round and said, bloody southampton with a look of sheer hatred, pathetic and that made me want the gits to lose every game, some 35 years ago.

How about: "congratulations for liking football for what it is - a form of entertainment - rather than getting dragged down into the inane tribalism that football engenders in a lot of people. Good for you sir" ?

Q: What's the best thing a Saints fan can do to annoy and wind-up a Pompey fan?

A: Tell them you don't hate Pompey.

They ENJOY the hatred some of us send their way, it's what they want to hear.

Keep feeding their hunger for hatred and you give them what they want. Me? I'd rather get on their tits by NOT hating them.

I tell you what. on a sat afternoon when you can't make a saints game. Put your saints shirt on. Drive to Pompey and pop down guildhall walk and shake everyones hand stating that you don't really hate them. It won't be long before you do, trust me

I saw somebody wearing a blue PFC jacket outside the Bargates on my way to the match last Saturday  - I can assure you I found this as instinctively aggravating as many/most on here would but when I thought about it a bit more it seems to me this is supposed to be a free country and people can wear whatever bloody clothes they want to - that's their business not mine .

The tribal nature of the game is well understood and can add to its enjoyment at times but when you take it to extremes (such as abusing complete strangers in the street or resorting to violence even) then you're going too far . Perhaps this is rather too primitive an aspect of our human nature for the more mature football supporter to overindulge .

That Pompey fan can walk the streets of Southampton with a far better chance of surviving the trip unscathed than a Saints fan wearing the red & white in Pompey could - that's a good thing .

I do similar with a few of the 'Blue Meanies' that I happen to know. "I don't hate you, why should I hate you? Pity you? I most certainly do!"

That gets the gander up!

WHERE THE HELL DID I SAY I POSTED ABOUT SAINTS?????? i originally posted about Pompey and their financial position ...i went on there as a favour to someone i know. i posted stuff about Pompey's predicament and got a gobfull of abuse back.........

course , because of 'his' abuse, that just spurred me (and a couple of others )on to wind him up.
