Best L1 squad EVER?

Puncheon signing appears to be the last until the summer - another top player added to our L1 squad.

Seems we have stripped a number of L1 (& CCC) sides of there best player(s) and now must have the best squad to ever grace L1?

That's a pretty formidable L1 squad.

Looks pretty good to me, and should still be good next season even if a couple of the bigger names (Lambert/Lallana) have left. Hopefully we can keep them though.

Anyone care to work out the approx. cost of each player and total squad cost?

You will never get people to agree on that. I said that the team that played Brentford (Incl. Subs) had a transfer value of 10 million + but was told by quite a few that the 'true' value was more like 3 million.

and there are several players there who can do a good job in other areas;

James into midfield

Lallana and Puncheon up front

Waigo and Antonio in midfield

Just because they are above us doesnt mean they have a better sqaud.

player for player i'd say ours is quite significantly better than Leeds

To resort to an old footballing cliche 'the table never lies'.

First XI of both teams, I would say that saints may just edge it but in terms of depth leeds are still stronger than us I feel (this was certainly the case before January hence the difference in points as the majority of those were collected before the transfer window). We are not performing so well at the minute due to injuries to that first XI and tiredness and as a result our form has dipped.

and that is why they are about 25 points above us. Suspect Norwich squads also as good as ours.

Glasgow Saint, I know you are probably around 12, and don't want to sound patronising, and trying to take an unbiased opinion. Leeds and Norwich appear to be a class above every other teamin this league. I know we knocked Norwich out of the JPS, but that was very lucky. Even without the 10pt deduction we would only be 9th. So to spout off with "we have the best squad in L1" can only be considered deluded or arrogant. I hope it is the former

Perhaps add an out and out right winger in summer. Jury still out on Seaborne and Otse obviously. Also think given the chance, Papa would do some serious damage up front.

..Good squad!

Pardew has done a good job,

we have beaten norwich, charlton, ipswich, torquay, northampton at home and bristol rovers, mk dons, northampton away.

The league has been average and had we of lost to Torquay on pens and lost to Bristol rovers away loads of people would be calling for his head.

I didnt say we are 'Playing the best in L1' this thread is about our squad, not our form or should/would/could we be doing better.

We are 15th - does every team above us have better squads (dont be daft)

The only team I think can compete is Leeds.

"Best League 1 squad ever"?

If I could paraphrase the great John Lennon (he's not even the best drummer in the Beatles), it's not the best League 1 squad this season, let alone ever.

If we're talking about the 3rd flight there have been plenty better than ours.

It's even debatable whether we're the best South coast squad to grace this level.

The Boscombe side under John Bond were pretty decent with people like Boyer,MacDougall,Dave Jones, Mel Mechin, and Tony Powell going onto play in the top flight.I know times have changed, but we'll have done pretty well for 5 of ours to do the same.

Any idea where Murty is fitness wise? Back soon?

os doesnt give date on latest justthat he's recovering.

Glasgow, when u follow a team, u have to do all that is in your power to help contribute towards the best platform going forward. When u raise the bar so high, it inevitably raises pressure and not all pressure is healthy. Some might say one supporter's view counts for zilch and zero effect but the way you go on sometimes (with due respect) you'ld have to be blind or 5 yrs old to see how counter productive it is. Other ppl read what you write, you influence them in different little ways, then in a match situation when things not going well, some might dissagree but that support or encouragement when needed to buoy the players, just aint there.. cause and effect fella.. now the lessons over, i hope to see a change in the way you write.

Cool?

Dont know who is out of contract in the summer but assuming we can keep everyone we want to in the squad I think the following will be replaced in the summer:-

Perry & Thomas

Wooton & Gillett

All likely to be moved on but you never know AP might feel they could do a job as squad players for another season

Possibly

Otsomber & Murty

Holmes

Waigo & Antonio

Bart

If AP does not want to keep these players or better players become available

So I think there is likely to be atleast another 4/5 arrivals in the summer aswell assuming we are still in Div 1.

What do other people think?

Davis, Conolly, Perry and Jaidi have already played in the top flight - i'm confident Fonte, Lallana, Lambert and maybe Spiderman could do the same.

Waigo has played in the top flight in Italy...........

If you wanted to take that a stage further the 1959/60 Saints side would murder this lot. They scored for fun. Paine, O'Brien, Reeves, Mulgrew/Clifton and Sydenham were lethal.

I'm glad you feel my posts have some effect on events, but trust me they don't. I am a passionate fan that likes to vent frustration on here from time to time. When I get chance to watch Saints I am super positive and get behind every player for the whole game (win, lose or draw)

You will rarely see me criticize any player individually, my 'negative' posts are also mis-understood. I just want the best for Saints and feel that this season we could maybe have done better (results wise)

If you could look back at my history here (Delldays will tell you) I was one of Burleys most vocal supporters, I was determined to back him while he remained our manager despite the growing pressure. I was banned from this site a few times for supporting him too agressively.

I am a huge supporter of Saints - I simply use this site to discuss, debate and vent. I rarely get personal with any poster, just have an opinion and like to make sure every ****er on here hears it ;)

in fact they would have probably got their arse kicked into next week. Footballers have changed and a League 1 player now would probably have been a top flight star in 1959. If you took away every non British player from today's Prem all these lads would be minting it in the Prem by now.Football has been diluted by hundreds of mercenaries that didn't exist before and our lads are lower down the pecking order. If you look at 59/60 there weren't even many non white Brits playing pro football now there are hundreds.

Although if a manager isn't in the best interests of a club long term, then blind faith and ubber support is also not productive. But that isn't mine or your decision alone but just goes with the balance of facts, results and performances.

I hear what you're saying.

Cool.

You have to question what is the point, if the manager cannot pick a decent team from all of that?

And Terry Paine, George O'Brien and John Sydenham wouldn't. If that team could murder Man City 5-1 at Maine Rd it could handle our lot. FFS we don't even play as a team just humping it up to Lambert. We need to put that right first.

For a rebuuilding season, I think the rebuilding has gone mother ****ing well! A JPT trophy or victory over the Skates and a high mid-table finish would please most Saints fans, and with a couple of quality additions in the summer...........I genuinely can't see why we can't win the league next season. We'll be the team to beat - and I hope we relish in that title!
