Guided Missile Posted 25 March, 2010 Share Posted 25 March, 2010 Just noticed this on 606. During my Tour of duty which ended early due to me being wounded by an IED , I was on patrol one day in this village on the outskirts of the Kajaki District . When we drove past these kids playing football , You have to keep your eye on them as some of them are in line with the Taliban , but my attention was taken by these 2 kids wearing Pompey shirts one with kanu and one with campbell on the back. I was tempted to get out and try and convert them to saints by giving them my Southampton vest , which i wore everywhere , but thats how people get killed. 3 weeks later , on a foot patrol . i saw another kid with a Pompey shirt , i went up to him pulled off my jacket ( i was being covered at all times obviously) and showed him the Southampton crest . the little boy see's it , swears blindly at me and runs away. I thought i had scared him, but he comes back with his dad who calls me a scummer! it was quite a sight seeing the pompey fans out there , and brought back many home memories of the south coast . im just asking would anyone know why there was a popularity for Pompey out there? anyway sorry to see you in this state , and i hope one day we both will be back in the prem beating you of course Surely Pompey are only popular in Afghanistan because of the crest??? Top Saints poster, BTW...
RedAndWhite91 Posted 25 March, 2010 Share Posted 25 March, 2010 Perhaps it's because there's not much difference between war-torn Afghanistan and Portsmouth?

Noodles34 Posted 25 March, 2010 Share Posted 25 March, 2010 Probably because Pompey fans, and all Afghans are Pikeys? That would be my guess. All Afghans are Pikeys? Are you for real? I don't know if that is supposed to be racist, misinformed or just plain dumb, like saying saying all Dibden/Hythittes are just middle class nobodys! Theres a big difference between Portsmouth and Afghanistan, one being a **** hole that no one cares about, another being a **** hole because everyone wants it, but none more so that the Afghan 'Pikeys' who have managed to beat just about anyone who fancied their chances, including the lastest Johhny Foreigners and GI Joes! and good luck to them... londonsaint1604 Posted 26 March, 2010 Share Posted 26 March, 2010 Great story that, it must be the crest that they like. I remember reading a story about someone being kidnapped by militants in Iraq but they let him go because he had the Muslim crest on his pompey shirt. I'm fairly sure that it was complete b*llocks but quite funny nonetheless.

'good luck to them' get a grip ffs, we, as a country, are at war and you are wishing our 'enemy' good luck, whether you agree or not with the Governments decision to wish all the best to those hiding behind women and children shooting at our soldiers, planting roadside bombs etc..is sickening, shame on you. waggy Posted 26 March, 2010 Share Posted 26 March, 2010 I am led to believe that Skatesville is twinned with Kabul !! Reminds me of a quote that was in the Sun about four years ago. A journo was in Iraq interviewing some squaddies from the south who were in some place called Umtaj, or something similar, that is a port town. Apparently Geoff (Buff) Hoon who was Defence Secretary at the time had made a comment that it was a similar town to Southampton and they were asking the squaddies if they thought that was correct. One lad quickly replied "There are no prostitutes, no beer and people are shooting at us, it's more like p*rtsmouth than Southampton".
lee_saint Posted 26 March, 2010 Share Posted 26 March, 2010 Plenty of kids in Iraq and Afghan will have English football shirts, it's one way of keeping them liking the west rather than the 'interesting' locals.....it's a tactic if you're going to be in a village, dish out a few Man United or Liverpool shirts and you'll be their best friend. Yes, i don't agree with why we are out there and the boys doing a job demand the utmost respect and honour, i for one wish they could all come home. My comment meant that they (they Afghans) are entitled to fight for their country, values and traditions etc (whether we think they are right or not) and in general, who are we to come in and try and 'sort things out'. I would say good luck to anyone who has been illegally invaded, though the Afghans certainly don't need any luck, like the Viet cong, they are more than capable. To clarify again, this is not a slate on soldiers just doing their job that they have been ordered to do, i hope they all come home alive. Hope that clears that one up

A temporary posting overseas to fight for Queen and country is hardly the same as emigrating to Spain, to catch a few rays and drink sangria, while moaning about the general state of our club and country. Hope that clears that one up You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Its not a case of us trying to prevent them from keeping their culture you fool, Its about driving out the Taliban, who are not allowing the country to evolve. The majority of GOOD Afghanis are onside with the coalition and see what we are trying to do as a step in the right direction, have you any idea of the work which is ongoing to make Afghanistan a better place? None of this will be complete until the Taliban are removed....and funnily enough they don't budge easily. So try looking at the facts before posting your drivel. I am well placed to discuss the matter having completed 2 Op Herrick tours myself.

I am well placed to discuss the matter having completed 2 Op Herrick tours myself. I am not a fool, and I don't post drivel (well not always anyway), so aside from the personal insults.... For someone who has been there you have clearly learnt very little about their culture and because you have been there (I am presuming "completed 2 Op Herrick tours myself" means that you are in the forces?) does not make you some sort of expert who can dismantle any argument with arrogance and obstination because "you've been there". I've been to the region too, doesn't make me an expert but I did learn that whatever we do at the moment won't make any difference (the elections are working well don't you think?) except leaving more dead. Sorry but we are talking 'tribal' here and thats a big difference in attitudes, values and cultures than in the cosy, educated west. If they want rid of (and I would agree that most do in an ideal world) of the Taliban then the best way forward is to support from the outside and let them do it their way. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, just a few obvious examples of interference (for no other reason than political and stategic gains otherwise we would be ousting Mugabe and that little bloke off Team America, World Police who also plays Cartman as well) whereby we have/are failing because we do not understand the culture. I'm sure "because you've been there" you'll disagree with a barrage of insults..
