JPT or Play Off Defeat

Well obviously, JPT win every time.

If you asked would you take the JPT win and 7th place or no JPT and a play-off final still to play, people would have to think a bit more.

Personally i'd rather it this way, but I know there are some who think getting promoted as fast as possible is the be all and end all, nevermind any success in between.

To you, perhaps.

To the majority of people it is a foundation to build our future success on.

Nah, for me it was more important to perform consistantly in the league. If we had made the PO after the -10 and start we had the confidence generated would have been huge.

The JPT was one good day and while better than nothing it is not an achievement similar to reaching the PO (IMO)

To reach the PO you have to perform all season against teams giving 100%

To reach the JPT you have to perform against weakened teams giving maybe 70%

Don't forget, we had our sh*t start to the season before any involvement in the JPT. We had 10 or 11 League games before our first JPT match, and if I recall correctly we didn't win in the first 8 games.

Therefore, linking the JPT win with our missing out on the playoffs is often rubbish, and it's getting a little boring.

If you dont blame the JPT, who or what do you blame??

Are you lot going to wander around this topic all the close season..?

This forum needs a breakaway forum where all the usual suspects can go round in circles on their own without the rest of us having to bother reading it all again and again

Umm. I think he was pretty clear. The damage was caused in the dire start to the season when we couldn't win a raffle. Just 12 points from 11 games. That was in turn caused by building a side (well let's be honest, rebuilding the club) from near scratch. That would have f**ked us up even if we had lost in the first round.

Our form since the first cup game is around 1.7pt/game, which would have given us 78 points if we had started the season the way we played it after those first 11 games. 78 points would be enough in any season but this. We are unlucky to have encountered such a tight promotion race. Our 2010 average is over 2pts/game. Championship form, cup or no cup. The negative effect of the cup was surely minimal. In fact the effect could well have been beneficial to morale. Was there really much else to cheer as we chased that mighty 10 point penalty down?

I'm happy our club got its day out but happier it rediscovered winning and got a taste for what winning brings. That's something we will bear the fruits of in seasons to come.

Who would have given up that day at wembley winning the paint pot & ending 7th for lossing in the play off semis & still been stuck in L1

I know which I would have picked in aug & I got to be there to see Hammond & Kelv lift the paint pot

Are you Thedelldays in disguise?

Just get p15t off reading posts on here blaming cup runs for failing to get into play offs & wanted to make point that we could have dropped out of cups as some say we should have & still failed to get to play off final / got to final & lost

Maybe Lawrie Mac should have gave up on cup in 76 to concentrate on getting promoted thus we would have never had any trophies

Oh, I see. In that case I agree with your gist! :)

I am not convinced that our team was any more capable of reaching the play offs this year with or without the JPT.

The only thing i can be sure of is that winning the JPT will have proved to this club it is capable of achieving again, and that might just be invaluable to us in the years to come

What a total load of bollix. Just what did that proof give to Luton last season? The JPT is on a par with that useless 7 aside trophy we have in the cabinet. In the years to come, no one will be bragging about the JPT or the invaluable effect it had.

The real question is, who would swap a trip to Wembley in the play off's rather than the JPT.

It's not a load of bollix at all, did you go? If you did you'd have to agree it was a great day out, JPT or not, how often do you get to see YOUR team lift a trophy at Wembley?

I agree totally with the guy you quoted, pardew wanted to build a winning mentality - and the best way to build that is to win a trophy - and i would imagine Pard's was banging that into the players all season.

If i follow the question at the start of the thread -then i'd say the JPT. Why would i swap winning a trophy, for losing in the playoffs? seems silly.

What question at the start of the thread? Would you prefer to have your toe nails clipped or your bollix cut off? That is a totally non question, If you compare a Wembley final for the JPT or the play off's, it's a no brainer.

Pardew wanted to create a winning mentality, it never was that. All that happened was a couple of penalty shoot outs and a sound thrashing by Pompey to set us up, winning mentality my arse. Pardew was banging on about so much rubbish, the pressure had got too much for him. You don't go giving players excuses by pointing at the -10 all the time, next step is still on the bottom, next is still in the relegation zone, next is having to clear the relegation zone and so on.

I don't deny the day out at Wembley was a great day out, but in the overall scheme of things, that's all it was. If you won the play off's it would actually be of some value.
