Block 5 Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Before the season started most of us (and the media) assumed that we were a shoe in for automatic promotion or if not, play-offs at the very least. In light of yesterday's events and bearing in mind our current state of managerless limbo how many of you are still confident that we will be promoted this year? Perhaps the mods could arrange a poll along the lines of; 1. Automatic promotion. 2. Play-offs. 3. Mid table mediocrity. 4. Me and my hosepipe are driving to the lonely lane. Micky Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Never thought we would make promotion with Pardew, now he's gone I think we will probably be further away still.
S-Clarke Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 I still think we can get automatic promotion, but i believe we need to get a new manager in quick - otherwise we'll be plodding along in Limbo and that's never great for consistent results. If we hang about and make the wrong choice, then playoffs. I cannot see us finishing outside the top 6 whatever, we've got too good a squad and i believe anyone could get us into the playoffs. The Kraken Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Far too early to tell; until we bring a new man in it's totally up in the air. I'd say the longer we take to appoint a new man, the more it may hamper our promotion chances.
hackedoff Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Play offs at best with the new manager getting the boot after failing in them.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 I think we will go up automatically. This is without doubt the best squad in League 1.
alpine_saint Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Still to early, and very much depends on who comes in as manager, but my gut feeling is playoffs.

When I heard the news yesterday I assumed that NC already had someone lined up and a swift transfer of power would mean no great impact on stability. However, subsequent statements (coupled with the usual speculation) lead me to believe that we could be 'rudderless' for a while. Surely, this is bound to impact on the players? Saint Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 I honestly never felt confident of promotion. Not comfortable with the favourites tag. I would consider it a massive achievement to get promotion, even more so now.

Ewell Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 We have ****ed up our automatic chances by getting rid of Pardew. Any new guy will take time to find his feet and get used to the division his players and the quality of the opposition. I think we can still make the play offs but how you do in them is a complete lottery. I would have rated our chances much higher with Pardew in charge as he knew how to achieve top 2 form as he got there from about November last season. What a shame we have shot ourselves in the foot with this one!

I would have rated our chances much higher with Pardew in charge as he knew how to achieve top 2 form as he got there from about November last season. What a shame we have shot ourselves in the foot with this one! Precisely. There were two options; back AP as the manager, bring in the players he needs and if it's not working after a month or so make the change. Or sack him with plenty of the window remaining so a new manager has plenty of time to make a mark. We did neither, and now have a squad 2 or 3 players short of where it needs to be, no new manager identified, and totally reliant on the loan market only for the new manager to complete the squad and make it his. All in, a total shambles that falls solely at the feet of Clotese.
gjphilsaint Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 I have to say that the timing of sacking AP being so close to the transfer window AND no appointment of a new manager AND not bringing in any further players to bolster our squad probably means that I should change my expectations for Saints at least until the New Year. I just hope that we are not too far off the pace by then...
Rebel Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 I think we are looking at the play-offs at best this season - and that's if we can get a good manager in before too long, bring in some good players on loan and then strengthen the squad in January at the moment the team is weaker than than the one that finished last season - we have a great first 11 - but no real strength in depth and with Lallana injured we really can't afford to lose any of the other players to injury Cortese seems to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory - pre-season was a joke, cup game pricing, matchday tickets prices and the booking tax an own-goal, the ban on press photographers just plain stupid, the failure to strengthen the team idiotic, allowing the team to get weaker criminal and sacking the manager Alan Pardew the day before the transfer window closes insane
sadoldgit Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 To get this club up we needed stability, something which we seem to avoid like the plague. The newguy coming in must wonder how long it will be before the boo boys are on his back or he does something to upset the CEO. We have not so much shot ourselves in the foot as balsted the whole damn leg off. It just gets worse......
Victor Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 At least the first part of Cortese's vision for the club has gone to plan - we have given the JPT trophy away with a whimper and can now concentrate on the league until January. The man is a genius.
Cabrone Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 Really, you couldn't have timed this any worse if you tried. Decent manager sacked just as the transfer door slams shut. There must be more to this than mets the eye - surely??? I thought AP would deliver top 2 - now it depends on how the new guy can adapt but he's already going to start with one hand tied behind his back and a disgruntled fan base. That said, Lambert did it at Norwich and there's still a long way to go but my expectations have now dropped down to playoffs. What a crazy mess. Hyde and Seek Posted 31 August, 2010 Share Posted 31 August, 2010 The simple facts are that Pardew has been sacked. It is not the biggest surprise, just the timing that has annoyed most of us. Don't expect Cortese to explain the reason behind the decision, he just won't. I'll reserve judgement until the next manager is appointed. I recall that someone on this site said that Cortese is not concerned about season ticket holders, so assume that he prefers the extra income from other sources. Well if he appoints the wrong manager he maybe in for a reality check. There is a recession going on, corporate hospitality seems down etc etc. In spite of this I'll put on my rose tinted glasses, and hope he sticks t the 5 year plan.
