Liquidshokk Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 can anybody explain why Barnard's early goal was disallowed? Cos the ref wasn't watching I should imagine.
niceandfriendly Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 Brilliant highlights. That's why I pay for SaintsPlayer. I also echo the astonishment at Barnard's disallowed goal. Never seen a clearer goal chalked off!
Professor Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 Anyone think we should have had a penalty. When Lambert's first half shot from 4 yards finished up hitting the bar it was because a Blackpool player was on the goal line blocking the shot wiuth what looked like his arm or hand. Anyone else looked at it, not that it matters now?
Matthew Le God Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 I'm still unsure why Barnard's goal in the first half was ruled out. Keeper has the ball in one hand held away from his body. A player runs up from behind him and heads the ball out of his hand (not touching the keeper) and then kicks the ball into the net. Fast forward until 3:35, the incident is then shown from numerous angles. http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/20110110/all-angles-covered-saints-2-0-blackpool_2264122_2263254/0,,10280~2263254~1,00.html Is the referee right to award a free kick? I can't understand what Barnard did wrong, as the keeper only had it in one hand and Barnard didn't touch anything apart from the ball. Is there really something in the rules of football that say this is wrong or has the referee made it up?
benjii Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 It has been done before and disallowed, I'm sure. A more officious official (!) would probably have booked him too.
benjii Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 We should've had a pen in the first minute. Clear handball.
benjii Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 Yep, and another from Lambert's close range shot. Definite handball and a red card. Don't really blame the officials for that though as it was ******* rocket from about 3 yards!
Saint Garrett Posted 10 January, 2011 Share Posted 10 January, 2011 I didnt notice how wide Lambert was playing on Saturday. He was playing as pretty much a left winger rather than a centre forward.

Matthew Le God Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 My mistake, Barnard broke this rule... A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball: • while the ball is between his hands or between his hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) • while holding the ball in his outstretched open hand • while in the act of bouncing it on the ground or tossing it into the air

trousers Posted 11 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2011 I didnt notice how wide Lambert was playing on Saturday. He was playing as pretty much a left winger rather than a centre forward. Now you mention it, I recall thinking he was playing out wide a lot when I went to Dagenham last week. This tactical adjustment in Lambert's positional play seemed to be designed to give Guly and/or Lallana space to run at defenders in the centre. It seems to be working quite well...a tactical masterstroke from Adkins?
trousers Posted 11 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Yep, as long as the ball is 'under control' an infringement has occurred. A ball can be 'under control' using just one hand.
dubai_phil Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 What a cracking goal from Guly though. Well worth the watch from all angles. That was the second time the dummy on the edge of the box was used (that I noticed in the highlights), first time Richardson nearly scored. Nice, shows confidence and trust in fellow players Score one for the radio listeners re our tactics though. DM picked up very early that RL & LB were pulling wide and Lallana was getting into the space that created, described as a deliberate tactic to upset Blackpool's normal way of playing out from the back. Credit to NA, we played a Plan C and whipped their asses
austsaint Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Great highlights indeed. As others have mentioned, Rickie looked very involved and effective; Barnard lively; Guly's goal sublime; Puncheon looked classy - I hope Nigel had a word with young AOC for shooting rather than supplying JP for an easy tap in late in the game. trousers Posted 11 January, 2011 Author Share Posted 11 January, 2011 Have just watched the highlights again (yes, they're that good!)... a couple of observations: (a) both our goals were the result of superb interceptions in midfield, an area we now seem to be commanding unlike earlier in season and (b) there were several ocasions were our players took a shot at goal when there was an unmarked Saints player in a better position to their left or right. In one respect it's encouraging that our players are so full of confidence now that they want a pop at goal but I'm convnced that we'd have had 2 or 3 more goals if the square pass had been made instead. Just saw your post above after my last post. Exactly the scenario I was highlighting - there were several other examples too. As I say, not a criticism of the players as it's good to see such confidence running through the team but something I'm sure Adkins would have covered in the debrief

Quite right. In terms of a) How much has the addition of Richard Chaplow influenced that? When he came in and started putting himself about and really challenging the opposition in midfield it came as quite a shock, showed us how much 'fight' we lacked in there. Schneiderlin in particular is now really following his lead. b) Our main weakness. Right now, although the obvious example of Chamberlain in injury time can be put down to youthful exuberance. In Adkins we trust on this one! Confidence/Generosity is a delicate tightrope to walk.
Window Cleaner Posted 11 January, 2011 Share Posted 11 January, 2011 I didnt notice how wide Lambert was playing on Saturday. He was playing as pretty much a left winger rather than a centre forward. I thought this was one of the big positives on Saturday, gave us width,an extra outlet for the midfield and created time for our players to get forward and support the attack. An excellent system plus Rickie is good at it,probably more useful there than as an out and out CF.One down side though, I thought our finishing was poor on the whole but as we still won 2-O no complaints there. Goes from one extreme to the other. At the beginning of the season it seemed like a few players were too scared to have a shot when they should have but now they're all at it when maybe they shouldnt Think I prefer the latter although AOC definately should have squared to to pucheon for the tap in... Adkins mentioned something about making sure it all doesnt go to AOCs head and that time I think it did a bit, after yet another amazing run admittedly.
