2 in a row

If we lose on Tuesday then it will be the first time since September 15th 2010, that we have lost two games in a row, which was part of 3 striaght defeats. Rochdale home 0-2, Swindon away 1-0, and Milton Keynes Dons 2-0.

Under Nigel Adkins, we have never lost 2 games in a row. I am posting this now as I think this could happen, lets face it we are going to lose at home at some point, and I think it might be soon! Just have a weird feeling.

I take that back, I have just had a look to see how we react to defeat, and it is quite impressive.

4-1

4-1

3-0

2-0

4-0

3-1

3-0

They are not in order, but we have a good record at putting things right.

Today's result has really baffled me. A game that I thought we should and would win! Makes the next 7 days so important ready for the derby. Take 6 points in the next 7 days and I will be very happy again!!

Anyone who didn't have some reservations about yesterday hadn't been looking at the form table or our recent away performances.

This.

I predicted a draw yesterday but was not surprised we lost.

We will win on Tuesday (although I would have been thinking differently had Pearson still been their manager).

I predicted a loss yesterday, even making £100 to soothe pain, I'm still very positive about Saints however and think we will bounce back. We are still, yesterday aside, playing the best footy I've seen from a Saints team. Bristol City are a good side right now, they'd got a draw at West Ham, and don't forget it took two deflected shots to score against us, but I think NA and the boys will put it all right on Tuesday (please!)

That is an impressive record of results after a defeat. I think the players will be dissapointed in how they all performed yesterday, and will be chomping at the bit to put it right on Tuesday night. Adkins will have them in today, then draw a line under yesterday and go again. Whilst we are dissapointed in yesterday's defeat, I think Hull's confidence would have taken a huge dent after throwing a 2-0 lead away in the last 15 minutes, if we can get at them from the off then there should be a few goals in it for us. Hull don't score many, only 18 all season which isn't far off being the worst attack in the league, certainly the worst in the top 8. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we went and won 3 or 4 nil on Tues.

Timing wasn't great against Bristol what with the new manager turning things around so quickly there, I think he's got them 15 points out of six games. Having said that our away record isn't that great - we would drop out of the play off places based on it.

I fully expect a win against Hull though.

We've lost 3 tough away games. No shame in that and Leicester wasnt even a bad performance. It's the away draws where we've let points slip really. The off days happen to everyone (see Barcelona).

If we win Tuesday all will be rosy. I'm sure the players are eager to get put there and play again.

We gifted a poor Cardiff side two goals and could not create ourselves. Hardly a tough game. We were slightly unlucky against Bristol, because if Chaplow had remained on the pitch I am sure he would have been on the left side helping Fox out with Adomah. Our problem was that we never had anyone who could then perform that role on the bench and let Adomah have his head. Bearing in mind how good Maynard and Adomah were against Millwall, I believe it would have been worth considering. I was shocked with our performance at Bristol, where I thought we had put out the best team, formation and tactics we have ever had under Adkins. Added to an easy routine for the last few weks to be in top condition.

Our home form has been good, so it's not improbable we should return to winning ways. But Adkins seems stumped for the moment as to how that performance came about and in Fryatt, Hull can cause us damage. My main concerns were Adkins comments "This week's training has probably been the best I've had since I've been at the club. Seriously, the lads have been flying this week. It just didn't happen." Let's just hope it's a blip and we can start again!

I fully expect us to beat Hull tomorrow. Ok, yes they have a new manager who is known and respected by the players after being with them for so long, but they have their weaknesses, and their defence is one. Although they seem to have quite a good away record, it'll all be how they react to Saturday's defeat and the way it happened. Even if they go 1-0 or 2-0 up, you can't help but think Saturday will still be fresh in their mind and the doubts might start to creap in. We look phenomenal at home at the moment, just wish we could take that into away games. 3-1 Saints

Defence, a weakness? you've been watching a different team from me. they've been gritty, dour bast*rds - they are more than capable of parking the bus; if anything, the problems are up front, though I expect them to go for things more under Barmby than Pearson.

We created more chances against Cardiff than Bristol IMO -but as you say, given all of Cardiff's injuries, the game was for the taking.

Not sure Chaplow would have made a massive difference: he playing on the right-hand side, so wouldn't have been up against Adomah. I thought we dealt with Adomah OK in the first half when Lallana was playing more as a conventional left-sided midfielder; it was only after Lallana was moved into the 'hole' that the flank was opened up and he began to give us problems.

Did we actually create anything at all in the second half? Apart from the one that De Ridder blasted over that is.

Shouldn't we wait until after the game tommorrow first?.....if we lose we can all go mental and start claiming 17th as a good season....

We have played Chaplow on the left and right depending upon the need. If he had been on the pitch it would surprise me if he was not switched to the left when the need became evident? I don't know of anyone in the team better suited to that job?

We are in such a great position that normally I would just take this defeat and move on, even grudgingly accepting that now. It's the surprise factor that is a question at the moment, for what I thought was our best team, tactics, formation and coupled with the best preparedness that Adkins had seen in the team. Normally you see these things coming or are half prepared when players are not at their best fitness levels. Just recently I thought we had found the best positions for Guly and Chaplow, combined with the added strength of Hooiveld to virtually gaurantee something from this game if we had enough in the tank. The result came as a shock on that basis.

Going to be interesting in the next few games if we actually get an answer to this blip. Adkins seemed equally mystified which is also unusual.

If you look at my second post, I now do think that we will bounce back. It is a fact that I did not realise that we had not lost 2 in a row under Adkins.

I think the preparations for Hull are now crucial that the players don't seize up from this surprise of a poor showing. As you say, everything was in place to be up for the game and be able to challenge Bristol City, that didn't happen. Credit to McInnes though, he has given his players some believe and they've been able to work together with a solid back line, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sneek into the play-offs if they keep hold of their players.

As I say, think it was the change in formation -as much as the personnel- that affected us as we went narrower in the 2nd half.

We appear to struggle against teams with width, especially ones with fullbacks that like to push up -and most home teams naturally play with a higher line. Likewise we struggle if the direct ball down the middle isn't sticking or working. For both those reasons, can see De Ridder starting sooner or later. Chaplow's injury surely gives NA licence to experiment. And if NA wants to give Lallana space to roam, play him in a 4-4-1-1 rather than a diamond, thereby protecting the flanks.

The performance was disappointing -but less disappointing than the Reading game (I don't totally buy the we-were-knackered argument as an explanation for reading). We had a fair amount of the play on saturday -and its not like KD had much to do. Bristol's position also belies their quality, esp at home. We used the Reading setback to push Guly up top; I am sure NA will have taken similar lessons from saturday.
