Mayuka - the Southern African view

Interesting article about Mayuka's time at Saints from a Southern African perspective, loads of detailed appearance info in there, and an excellent reference to him maybe NOT being the new Godfrey “Ucar” Chitalu after all... :)

We've only won one of the 7 matches he's appeared in, the demolition of Villa, not that he had much impact on the scoreline when he came on.

He's got a 5 year contract but he's only 22 - do people think we'll be shipping him out or trying to slot him in ? Adkins' signing, but then most of the starting team are.

I always had the view that he was a bit of a panic signing after our pursuit of several wingers came to nothing during the summer. Not to say he is a winger by trade, but it was clear we were after a forward with pace who could also play on the wing.

It is very confusing not to see him more involved - I appreciate he may be one for the future but he doesn't play for the u21's, he isn't going on loan, and he doesn't log minutes for the first team. So what is the point?

Loads of details but still they missed to mention that he won a penalty for us against Villa....

One of his problems has been the unexpected great form shown by Puncheon this year!

In the sense that he was only going to get in the team playing out of position in the first place, you mean ? Replace "Puncheon" with "Lambert" and I think that's nearer the truth - but you're right that the one time Mayuka did impress he was quickly forgotten about due to Puncheon's form at that time.

It's not like when he has played he has looked awful, and NA said before he played him vs Sunderland that he had been on fire in training so clearly has potential.

As with Ramirez to an extend it will be good to see him after a whole pre season and see if he can have an impact next year.

Nat Clyne said on twitter that him, Shaw and Jrod are the quickest players at the club.

All teams need speed of thought in their players, some players combine that with above average running/sprinting speed. If they have got both then they can look "quick". Bale is fast but his speed of thinking is even faster hence he looks amazingly quick, ditto Ronaldo.

Mayuka's pace is not in debate, his speed of thinking-and that's intimately related to his team + tactical awareness, his integration and acceptance in the squad and their playing to your strengths, is not on that level. If your game is largely based on pace then asking a team like Southampton to bring him on then suddenly start lumping balls behind the full backs for him to run onto seems a refutation of everything the team is trying to do in the rest of the game. None of the rest of the team are really prepared for that run, or for the hoof, and that means the chances of failure in that tactic is high. IF on the other hand, Mayuka is trained in "The Southampton Way tm" and can then bring his pace as an added value element to that - well i can see him doing well. The other way around- it won't happen. So, its up to Mayuka to sort himself out and learn "The Southampton Way tm" if he wants to play, not watch. The fact he's not playing show's he has not learned enough to be better than whoever starts ahead of him yet.

Obviously it's down to the manager (in this case ) ex-manager to select his side and he will play his favourites and obviously Puncheon got in ahead of Mayuka and held his place.

Talk about headless chickens though....did people really expect him to come in from day 1 ....and then play out his 5 year contract with 250 games under his belt? .....surely not ?

Who knows what the situation maybe... if we have a few injuries, the odd-suspension and someone is left out because of "poor form ", then suddenly those same people will be moaning because we don't have anyone suitable on the bench.

I read an article today saying that Chelsea were on track to play 60+ games before the season is out..whilst we will have played just ....40.

We need to have some suitable back-up should be be involved in more matches next season ...and have the (above) to consider. I'm sure Mayuka will have his turn ....but later probably rather than sooner.

Sorry but total clap trap....... He's not even playing for the junior teams this is the POINT!!!! He's not playing at all. So you have completely lost the question........ IF he is a long term option any not play him in the reserve/junior teams ???? Hell loop this is the question ?????

I didn't suggest that he should be in the first team ...and true neither NA (although 5 times as sub.) nor MP has chosen him to start.

That is not to saythat... .in the remaining 4½ years of his contract, he might not become a regular at some stage.........
