Some things surprise me;

Helicopters crashing into pubs

Fernando Torres scoring

J Rodrequez playing for England

But Tom Daley being gay? Not really.

But why is there so much publicity about it, as if anyone cares (enough to start a thread about it).... zzzzz

I think the reason it got so much attention is that it is still very rare for sportsmen to come out as gay - although he hasn't technically as he says he still fancies girls (if anyone believes him).

It's a shame that it needs to be done, as it really shouldn't matter one jot. Good on him though, and hopefully, it can help other people to feel better about coming out if they are worried about it.

That said, this 'news' was about as surprising as when Rickie Martin came out.

Gary Liniker's congratulating Daley on Twitter and hopes it will encourage gay footballers to have the courage to come out. Bet when it happens it will be a Saints player and Pochettino will be making it part of his "we're all in this together and support each other" Hahaha

That fact that people care this much is precisely why almost gay footballers would want to come out.

In the MLS Robbie Rogers couldn't pick the ball up and play a 10 yard pass without a commentator describing him as a 'very courageous man to be as open and honest etc.etc.etc.'

and thats the thing, unless you were an absolutely top-tier top-5-in-the-world-ish player, you wouldn't be known as that pacey winger, that rock of a centre-half or that fantastic goalkeeper, but simply 'the gay footballer' and I think its understandable to not want to have that as your main reputation superceding your ability and career as a footballer.

Justin Fashunu being the prime example
