landford.saint Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 Saturday I was sat/stood as normal in the Northam, the fight occurred a few rows behind me so I am unaware of how it started, However at the end of the match when all the yoof went down the front and were giving it loads of verbal I saw the following:- Roughly in frontof where the steps come down between 42 and 43 the youths were being quite vocal, The stewards were lined up in typical defensive formation with the a row of stewards with a row of their supervisors behind them directing them. I youth I saw was being particularly vocal and I saw him gesturing/pointing at a steward, All of a sudden this steward punched the youth in the head. The youth was then seized by a number of stewards. I was too far away to be able to hear what the youth said, so can not say if he made any threats or if he was in any way abusive. I am assuming that these incidents were being recorded on the Stadium CCTV. Before you ask, I am not a youth with something to prove, I am middle aged and was a Policeman for 14 years, so I am what they describe as a credible witness. Totally agree, some fans are ass holes. It's near impossible to get a Steward charged with anything tho, they will always have the authorities on their side, like heavy handed coppers, bouncers or Israeli snipers. SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 (edited) I was previously a steward there. And i have to say some of the things i was told to do to those misbehaving were uncalled for, and downright out of order! And i have been doing this type of event, and bigger security for over 20 yrs. But having met the so called head stewards, i know why. They were more intrested in their own clicky club and giving out the best jobs to their friends, and following Cowan/Lowe's orders (no matter how wrong they seemed). Arselickers 'R' Us and Yes Men are just mild names i could call them, they are the jobsworths your talking about! One is a car salesman and one a B&Q worker(lots of security experiance there then) but Lowe likes plyable people now doesn't he! P.S before you say he's bitter,No! i left of my own volition, as i was told by a head steward that i should treat this as my main job, and not my current one! What a P-rick! chi saint Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 Typical posts from some realy thickies on here I would suggest et al Lordswoodsaints, ivangolac, . If you "hard cases" would just watch the game and not start giving it out, you wouldn't get hurt. If you ain't happy with the standard of stewarding, do something positive and apply to join, albeit the two aforementioned idiots would probably be wasting their time, judging by the poor standard of their postings. I have been going for 30+ plus years, my mates the same and how often have we had a scrap with stewards...never, why? cos they are there to do a job, which centres around public safety and public order. So as far as i'm concerned if you are going to gob off at them don't come winging on here if you get a slap instead go home to mummy, if you happen to know who she is! WealdSaint Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 The stewards do a hard job.........esp. hard if, as I suspect, a lot of them share the concerns of most fans about the current management. Even harder still if the current management promote stewards who share their "unique" views. The vast majority, I suspect are saints fans who are as cut up as we are. The stewards may have crumbled and/or over-reacted, I don't know, but I'm pretty certain they didn't kick it off in the first place. One of the main reasons I have not gone to a game this season is due to the behavour of the stewards towards one of my daughters. I posted about the way the stewards seemed to be getting more aggressive at the end of last season. I have video evidence of my daughter being assaulted but never bothered going to the club with it because they will just do the normal close ranks ********,instead we never renewed season tickets, end of problem. The club and its employees deserve each other.

nathan Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 I would say that at least 95% of the stewards in the ground are fans. They don't get paid enought to do it for any other reason. Like any job, you get jobsworths and brown nosers. I have never had any trouble with any stewards, police, or security at St marys, or for that matter at any of the fifty away grounds I've been at watching Saints. I always feel that if you don't go looking for trouble, it won't come looking for you. I appreciate that there are always exceptions to this, but on the whole, a lot of people need to grow up and realise that if you call a steward a ****** to their face and goad them, they will react. 73ee Posted 19 January, 2009 Share Posted 19 January, 2009 Sat in the itchen north as I do as suffering season ticket holder, the last thing you want is a stuard telling everybody to sit down, when they are genually supporting the team. The boxes are empty behind, and when saints went 1 down, their approach was heavy handed and unneccesary, which provoked quite a scuffle. If they are fans then surely they should react to are feelings and not just wade in ?
saintwarwick Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 Why was the "thug" ejected???? For the same reason mentioned in another thread about someone who vented their anger at the box waving season tickets but were asked to sit down by some older saints fans who were then subjected to verbal violence by the said thug. The said thug even had the idiotic mind to invite other saints fans to take him on with his "come on have a go if you think you are hard enough" gesture with his hands. Exactly, for about 15 minutes I didn't take my eyes off the front of the Northam and the steward was DEFINATELY hit first. sydney_saint Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 imho, and I stress that part, peoples reactions towards stewards seem to be very similar as those towards refs. Whilst some support them, most are quick to criticise without always knowing the full details of their instructions. I am no steward (living is Aus makes that quite difficult) but I would imagine that the sitting down aspect is the FA rules or just a safety precaution. Regardless the stewards have to do the job they are paid to do which would not be helped by colourful language towards them. I am by no way excusing them however as all the details are hazy to say the least I can not condemn them, as there are many dickhead fans out there. Like towards refs many are quick to criticise but refuse to join and improve the standard of stewarding

Many people get paid for doing things that they enjoy, why not Stewards.
