Manning gets lots of unfaircriticism in my opinion, Yes he may only be top Championship quality but he gives his all, and his 2 delicious crosses created2 goals.

Well done Ryan, you deserve praise

Agree although he does need to improve his defensive duties.

Like most players of his quality, he has both strenghts and flaws. If we can get the most out of his good qualities, and shore up around his worst, then he can play a big part for us this season.

He’s certainly been playing like a man possessed under TE but let’s not pretend he hadn’t been putting in some ropey performances before that. At Derby in particular he acted like an absolute helmet.

He reminds me of Danny Fox, shit in defence, but really decent going forwards

Very similar players. Manning is better in a 3-5-2 or whatever as there's less defending to do. I do think he stands off players because he knows he's not very fast. Either that or he just doesn't know how to defend.

Having said that he's proving a real threat going forwards so it's swings and roundabouts.

He’s great going forward in a team looking to dominate, and an absolute liability in his own half when we’re under the cosh. Hopefully we’ll be doing well enough to not really require his defensive ‘skills’ going forward

I think he's a midfielder trapped in a left back position. I know that midfielder was his original position and he seems to enjoy getting forwards. That's a very strong part of his game. I've also seen him go missing in the defensive aspect of his game, particularly when we're on top and applying pressure. The trouble is that a decent team is going to exploit that as happened many times during our last Championship season. If he can add that defensive part to his game he can be a really good player for us. Otherwise he's a decent player that's also periodically a liability.

It's the same as with Stephens who is a great backs to the wall centre back but can switch off. Or Smallbone who is great as passing and finding pockets of space but isn't going to win any battles in the middle of the park.

I don’t think he is going to improve much defensively, but maybe his teammates and our tactics can help cover his shortcomings.

I think Tonda said an interesting thing in the pre match presser when he was asked if Fellows would get problems defensively against a better calibre of wingers.

His response was something like: I don’t see it as a one v one, it is something we as a team must deal with. Could also be one of the reasons for bringing in Quarshie to have better cover on Mannings side.

His best defensive attributes are clever ability to win cheap free kicks and also when under the cosh to generally be relied upon to play a decent ball out of defence.

Certainly this season his contributions going forward have far outweighed any defensive issues so for me he is a nailed starter and his brother @Manningo can sometimes be spotted amongst the travelling fans!
